Behind Enemy Lines (2001)
Unbelievable... in a bad way.
*Spoilers... kind of. Not really.*
This film was good except for the fact the main character made a lot of stupid, stupid mistakes. Considering the training his character should have had, there were a lot of things he did that seemed really out of character. Many of these things were even common sense. Many times I found myself saying "Oh come *on*! What are you thinking?" For me, this alone spoiled the entire movie, very badly. 3/10
Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (2002)
Straight from a skeptic: it's actually pretty good.
I really didn't care to see the film right away when it came out. I ended up seeing it with a friend four days after release, because he was more anxious than I.
There's some hokey stuff going on at the beginning. Anakin is a little... strange. The point that he's immature/childish seems to be overdone. In the beginning when there aren't any action scenes, acting seems stiff. Hard to say if it's acting or directing. I don't know.
Other than that: yes there is a story. Yes it was interesting. Yes there was action. There was a lot of neat stuff going on, especially near the end. In fact, all of this was pretty good.
The only other bothersome thing is the use of cliches. There seemed to be a lot of current day phrases and jokes used which just didn't seem to fit into the film.
In other words, it was a pretty good movie with some oddities. Don't let the two oddities set you off, and you'll likely really enjoy the movie. I had thoroughly expected to hate it. 7/10. (I gave epI a 5/10).
Proof of Life (2000)
Great movie that explores ransom situations with more detail.
Well-done acting from all cast. More of a unique story. Spoiled a little by Meg Ryan's "wardrobe". What on earth were they thinking? I would suspect someone in her character's position wouldn't be thinking of being a fashion show.
The Patriot (1998)
Not a matter of "no action", there simply is *nothing* here.
Forget the fact that most people expect an action movie form Seagal. This movie simply had no substance. Very long, drawn out, and boring. Scenes were much longer than they had to be - the camera would often focus on something for long periods of time when absolutely nothing was happening. Cure for insomnia. Worst Seagal movie by far (I do like some of his other movies). 1/10
Serendipity (2001)
Not bad story, but pretty hokey in places.
20-second review, no spoilers: I occasionally enjoy a "chick flick". I'm not a typical female. This movie was... ennnnuuh.. O.K.
The story itself was O.K., but some of the stuff the characters said and did was pretty hokey. The acting was good. There were a few spots in the movie that yielded some good laughs. 4/10
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Disney is finally creative again
I get to the point (no spoilers whatsoever):
Unique story teaches values. Some unique jokes. Some cliche/old jokes. Good animation (for 2001, of course!)
This movie is aimed at younger kids, but enjoyable enough to watch as an adult. (In fact, I (23) saw it with two friends, one 26-years-old and pregnant with first kid, and my 27-year-old boyfriend). Appropriate for all ages.
Whole lotta cuteness going on in the movie, but I didn't find it sickening (I tend to find cuteness sickening).
I'd give it a 7/10, boyfriend gave it a 6/10, friend would give it a 9/10 or 10/10. It's definitely worth seeing.
The short bird cartoon done by Pixar ("for the Birds") at the beginning of the movie was GREAT. The mannerisms of the birds were right on, and made me grin so hard my eyes started to tear (right at the beginning). Reminded me of watching the Great 'story' & imagination. You can see a clip of this at pixar.com.
Along Came a Spider (2001)
story has good potential, but bad movie
Gazillions of plot holes and other things that don't make sense. The basic story is interesting and has great potential, but quickly gets ruined by the plot holes and lack of explanations well. You'll find yourself saying, many times: "where the heck did THAT come from?"
Acting was ok.
Best summed up as "not thorough". 3/10. Yep, there were THAT many plot holes.
Magnolia (1999)
Definitely a different movie, but fails to keep and catch your attention.
I'm usually into really strange/different movies, but this one did not do it for me. The acting was good, the end was pretty cool, but the "story" bored me - and three hours of boredom is not a good thing.
The movie constantly jumps around between storylines of different characters. I usually don't mind this, but in this movie it seemed to happen too much and seem pointless at times. By the end of the movie, I didn't really feel that anything had really happened, which is a real disappointment after three hours. This movie was also very depressing.
Perhaps I just wasn't in the mood for a movie like this, but I'm pretty sure I just didn't like it :) 2/10.
The Road to El Dorado (2000)
Great movie, but not for young kids.
It's a really great movie - as an adult I enjoyed it. But there is a fair amount of adult humor (and even a brief scene of bare-bummed male nudity)!
I was really impressed that the female love interest in the movie was short and voluptuous - moreover, she was portrayed as cute and s e x y (not just "funny"; as I would expect a movie to do). How about that? Guys get smitten with short, voluptuous women too...
I don't have kids, but when I watched this movie, several times I thought "This is NOT a kid's movie..." I'd probably let a child over 10 see it.
The Next Best Thing (2000)
Bloated and lacking content!
Acting awful, story awful, direction awful.
The movie seemed really slow, choppy, and lacking in dialogue most of the time - ridiculous story.
Literally the worst movie I have ever seen - it's even worse than The Patriot (Steven Segal). Though, I haven't seen Battlefield Earth yet...
The English Patient (1996)
Overrated.
Kind of interesting twists to the movie, but mostly it bores.
At one point in the movie, I found myself thinking about one of the characters: "jeez, just DIE already"...
I'd see it again, but not if I had to pay for it. I wouldn't tape it.
