Casino Royale (2006)
A refreshing turn-around for the Bond Legacy.
Casino Royale is nothing like the Pierce Brosnan films, it reminded me of the Sean Connery films, putting the gritty apathy back into the Bond character. The villain is not a superhuman clone that is impervious to pain bent on holding the world hostage just for the fun of it. Nor does Bond have an invisible car capable of fighting a war all by itself. The gadgets are believable, and more importantly, so are the action scenes. I truly left the theater knowing that there is hope to revive the Bond series.
**Minor spoiler ahead** The only thing that left me confused is that M specifically mentions the terror attacks of 9/11. If Casino Royale is Bond's first mission as a double-o, then it leads to the conclusion that all the other films took place in the future. **End of Spoiler** To summarize, Casino Royale is a long-awaited revival of the Bond series, one of the best films since Sean Connery left the role, succeeded by a clown, turning the series more comedic than interesting. A must-see for Bond connoisseurs like myself. I promise this one will get better with time, perhaps as one of the best Bond films.
Man of the Year (2006)
Not the movie you see advertised
I am a big fan of Robin Williams, whether it be his comedy in movies like Mrs. Doubtfire or his more dramatic role in One Hour Photo. So imagine how fast I ran to the theater to see the newest Williams flick, this one about a comedian who decides to run for president, and ends up winning. The first few minutes of the movie are funny, classic Robin Williams. Soon after, you begin to see the true colors of this movie. Man of the Year contains political conspiracy, suspense, drama, and even a short scene containing a little thrill. (Reminded me of a scene from Red Eye.) All in All, Man of the Year is a decent film, definitely not Robin Williams at his best. It was nice to see Christopher Walken, another one of my favorite actors, and Lewis Black, my favorite comedian together. Despite all these funny actors working together, the one bad actor completely screws the entire movie with over-acting, not to mention the rather generic political conspiracy plot.
