The Trip (2002)
Funny, moving, stays with you for days
This was the closing night movie of the Philadelphia International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and it should have opened the festival (would have been a better note to open on than Britney, Baby, One More Time.)
This is the kind of well-written, well-acted and gorgeously filmed movie that deserves all the lauds it receives. Definitely my favorite movie of the festival, as I laughed with tears in my eyes. I'll be owning this one day.
Having the director, star, and producer there for a Q&A was just icing on the cake. More power to them - and GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!
Urbania (2000)
AMAZING - Dan Futterman is mesmerizing
I saw this at the Philly Int'l GL Film Festival in 2000 - where it won the Jury Prize for best feature and well deserved it. I was shattered by the end of this movie (somebody wrote that it was "cathartic" and I couldn't find a better word.)
I've seen some of the reviews here that did NOT like the movie, and I could see how it's not for everyone. You have to get into the "Urban Myth" part of the movie but also separate it from the actual plot of what's going on, and that can be difficult. However, I don't see how the criticism of the PEOPLE who liked the movie should be included. Just because YOU don't like something doesn't mean that the people who do like it are stupid or gullible. Get over yourself - and I'll remember to take your OPINION with a grain of salt next time.
I'll Love You Forever... Tonight (1992)
Black and White does not "art" make
Perhaps in 1992, to be a "gay" movie AND in black and white was a sign of cutting edge. Sorry, this movie went nowhere very slowly with a protagonist who barely talked throughout the movie and annoying tertiary characters who hardly related to each other. Yes, the main character is sympathetic by being disregarded by the public at large, but have something HAPPEN to him, please.
Thomas Jane in an unrecognizable walk-on is not worth the price of admission, and it took forever to realize that this was one of those movies that wasn't going to "end" - no resolution, just walking down the street. It wasn't ATROCIOUS, so I gave it a 3
Six Feet Under (2001)
Beautiful opening credits
I've seen all of the episodes of this recently premiered show, and I'm still kinda getting used to it. I could easily see how some might be bored or put off - it definitely takes a certain mindset. I'm caught into it now, though, and I'm starting to see some plot lines happily resolved (the mother & daughter had a nice moment together in one episode; you've got to see the characters getting along every now and then, don't you?!)
However, I did have to comment on the previous comment on the opening credits. I tape the show and could easily fast forward through the credits - but they really ARE gorgeous! And the music works beautifully with them. Wow - Michael Ball really does have a great vision!
