Baby Driver (2017)
It felt like a commercial for IPod
The whole movie was like a song.
A tune comes out of nowhere, and everyone is acting cartoonishly all the time. The villains felt one dimensional, in fact every character in this film was one dimensional. Of course, because this whole film is like a song written and produced to promote iTunes or an apple product related to music. It was well directed and enjoyable, but I couldn't take anything seriously, because the main character is dancing all the time with his music on.
On the bright side, I don't think I hated anyone in this film, because of how it was written. But I didn't particularly like anyone either, and I guess that's also because of the writing too.
Terrifier 2 (2022)
Good pacing, never got bored.
It's definitely filled with gore.
But it was a unique experience for an horror film. Not family friendly but despite its violence, it has a hopeful vibe that wasn't there in the first film. I'm surprised and actually grateful this sequel exists.
The director really thought of the experience throughout the film, and you can tell this was made for viewing in theater. It is a big improvement from the first Terrifier, the pacing and the cinematography was especially notable. You really don't feel the two hours passing by. I hope there is another sequel for this. Terrifier needs its own franchise. I don't know about others, but I need more Art the clown for some reason.
Pearl (2022)
Can't wait for the sequel.
Pearl plays well with it's themes, the acting, the visual style, the pacing, the characters are all very good. I felt for Pearl, and all the people around her. A lot of films, especially old films, fails to make me feel anything for any of the characters and themes, because they focus too much on the black and white, who is right and who is wrong. With Pearl, I couldn't blame anyone for all the bad things that kept happening, Pearl herself had understandable motivations and upbringing that turned her into who she was, her strict mother and sick father probably had their own understandable background that makes them human and not just a caricature to demonize in the story. Pearl is so well written for a horror film about the girl who becomes the crazy old lady in X that it's actually hard to knit pick on its flaws. It certainly chooses its audiences, but for horror lovers, it is highly recommendable.
Barbarian (2022)
Unpredictable storytelling, that's about it
I was putting off reviewing this, because I needed some time to think a little before writing my review.
This is certainly for horror lovers, who likes unexpected twists, in their stories. This film keeps you questioning things all throughout its run time, but the reveal is going to divide opinions, while some would see this as shockingly disturbing and original, others might view it as ridiculous and stupid.
I thought it was well written with clear themes regarding feminism and the mystery of the house keeps growing even after the big reveal. I also liked the unexpected choice made by a character near the end, that choice felt comedic but it wasn't out of place.
I liked many of its ideas, but this movie is all about shocking the viewer with its reveal. I couldn't vouch for anyone so I don't think I will watch it a second time.
The Martian (2015)
Predictable Cheesy Feel Good type film
I knew everything would go well, and everyone's going to have a happy ending, and I was right.
Visuals were stunning, the science aspect is well thought out, I mean it is based on a popular sci-fi novel so that's to be expected. I would compare this in similarity with Top Gun Maverick, the vibe, the action, and the feel good ending is all very alike. If you like this type of story telling, then you might like Top Gun Maverick too.
I watched it because of it being based on a sci-fi novel aspect, and how every scene of mars and space looked really nice in the trailers so if you're into space and science, I agree it is a good watch.
The story bored me from time to time, I admit. I know it is based on a fictional book, but the predictable characters, dialog, and everything going well, otherwise we won't have a movie aspect, just made me think this type of feel good movies aren't for me, no matter how well written and shot it is from a scientific, technological stand point. I didn't feel any worry or anxiety for the main cast, because I kind of knew where it was going from the start, and if you don't like that type of predictable vibe, then this movie is not for you.
I mean, I like happy endings too. This film is definitely worth the watch when you want to see a sci-fi film with stunning visuals and feel good story telling. I just didn't like the predictability of it all, especially the characters are boring paper cut/ stereotypes with these types of film.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021)
Romantic Comedy
I knew the ratings would be low.
But I knew what I was getting into, and I wasn't disappointed.
The actors probably knew it too, because the pacing and acting was just brilliantly comedic.
I loved every second of it.
Venom ; Let There Be Carnage disguises itself as this cool villain story, but it is actually a super hilariously over the top love comedy between Venom and Eddie.
It was most likely intended because the acting was really great if you view it as a comedy and not as a serious villain story. It's all about the perspective.
The marketing should have done better in that regards because most low ratings come from false advertising.
Bullet Train (2022)
Sorry couldn't get through this
I watched the first twenty minutes or so and gave up, because the unfunny and unnecessary dialogue was going over my head. The characterization was annoying too. I mean Lemon and Tangerine?? They are introduced making fun of their code name or something, and I couldn't stand how long they were going on about it. No offense to the actors, it's the script and directing that didn't sit well with me. Which is disappointing because I was looking forward to all the action shown in the trailer and I couldn't bear to get through the first thirty minutes because of bad writing.
I've had similar experience with another film, the trailer looked really good but I cringed because of the dumb dialogue and quit ten minutes in. The visuals are getting absolutely gorgeous and stunning each year, but it is the writing that is at the heart of every entertainment. I don't think I will watch this again unless it's only for the action and visuals.
Three Thousand Years of Longing (2022)
Djinns, love and stories
I saw mixed reviews before seeing this, so I was prepared to be confused, but the story is not too complicated that it hinders the enjoyment of the film. I thought it was well made and well written.
The acting and characters were spot on and the film never bored me with its beautifully shot cinematography. I don't think I have watched this director's works very much but I guess I should give his other stuff a go.
The film keeps you questioning things, but if you keep in mind, the main concept is about love and loneliness, the meaning behind stories and science, it shouldn't be that hard to get through. Over all I loved this film, and I believe it is worth the watch if you like good storytellings in movies.
Inventing Anna (2022)
Mostly tweaked but still true to the real story
I couldn't root for anyone except maybe Rachel and Neff.
It has this message behind it about greed, the gap between the rich and poor, and how women are still looked down upon in society. I think the mix of these messages was done in a good way behind all the glamor and glitz. I liked that. Visually, I enjoyed the film a lot, I didn't mind the made up parts either. The acting was good, and since it is based on a real life story plot, it knowingly changed things expecting most viewers to already know the full story of Anna Delvey.
What I didn't like about it is that almost everyone is unlikable in this story. You can tell the writer of the script tried hard to make us sympathize with the characters including, or especially with Anna. I'm actually familiar with someone like Anna, and people who surrounds and praises someone like her. It is impossible to see unlikable characters in a sympathetic light when you know what it is actually like to be with them in real life. Which is funny because this is based on a real story. My opinion is, there is no need for sympathy in this story because in my opinion, no one deserves sympathy here, except probably Rachel.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Don't Think, Feel, The Movie
I will give it 8stars for the visuals and cinematography.
The characters and plot were so rushed and predictable, if you just want to enjoy a film where everything goes so well for the main cast and in the end, everyone in the lead is happy, then this movie is for you. If you think too much like Rooster, then you're not going to enjoy this that much. I believe that is the point of this whole film.
One of the prominent nitpicks I have, because I'm not a fan of happy go lucky films, is that the mission should be impossible to accomplish even for an elite fighter pilot. It's only possible because Maverick is too talented for his own good, and throughout the whole film he is risking the safety of every normal and sane person besides him because he mistakenly believes, if he could do it, everyone else can. Not to mention, he has a strong plot armor that prevents him from dying after crashes, that takes away the tension and adds predictability to the plot.
This is a film made for a broad audience because of its simplicity and action packed entertainment.
I like that part, it's beautifully shot, but I doubt I will rewatch it for the story and characters.
X (2022)
Not for everyone, but worth it if you like horror.
Not for everyone, but enjoyable if you're a horror lover, who doesn't mind a little porn mixed in. I know many people are not gonna enjoy this, if they're not used to the sex scenes mixed in with gore type of film, also some of the homage is going to go over their head, if they're not into the horror genre. But the writing is good, and I look forward to the sequel/prequel of this.
Free Guy (2021)
Don't Think Too much Guy
It looked good. I loved the cg.
The romance plot in this is cringe and frankly childish. This movie is geared more towards teens and kids who loves games. I definitely would have enjoyed this more if I didn't question everything, but I just couldn't accept;
Blue Guy's odd attraction towards Milly. (The reason is revealed later)
Everyone keeps saying the NPC's an hacker, but how do they accept that so smoothly anyway?
The Game itself is online GTA, nothing special about it, even with some AI lifeform.
Milly falling for some random guy in a game, and she's also the creator of the game right. (The reason is revealed later.)
Blue Guy's outrage after the reveal that everyone he knew was an AI. (Such an emotional AI)
The Anton character was infuriatingly annoying. (He should have employed the programmers, he didn't need to be such an idiotic evil villain)
Milly's attachment towards Guy after erasing his memories, but they claim they can't replicate him. (He comes back with an kiss)
I watched for the spectacle of the cg visuals. Character, plot, narrative, script was just meh. It was an overall enjoyable film. I just couldn't root for anyone. One one of these social commentary stuff regarding NPCs.
The Suicide Squad (2021)
Very well written and executed
All around perfect, visuals, plot, pacing, character development, humor.
It felt like a realistic take on a hero saving the day plot, where they depict how almost everyone would be killed horrifically, and brutally. They don't hold back on all the gore, and I appreciate it.
One or two nitpicks I have are how the protagonists' side becomes so upset when it comes to kids dying. This film is definitely not for kids, maybe for some families but they didn't need to depict their sympathies too much.
The other problem is that I couldn't root for anyone in this movie. I didn't really cared if anyone died, and while that didn't hinder the overall enjoyment, it decreases the possibility of rewatching the film again.
A solid 9 out of 10 stars.
Malignant (2021)
Good For Campy Horror Lovers
I love comedic horror, and unintentionally funny (or in this case intentionally campy?) films.
I wasn't expecting much from the trailers but then every YouTube reviewers said it was FUNNY, so I just had to see it for myself. And I must admit I was enthralled by James Wan's visual talent and the ridiculous narrative combination. Don't go in expecting any serious story telling, watch it if you want to burst out laughing from a on the surface, serious looking horror flick. The beginning feels like The Room where you're left wondering if that scene was being over the top or not, and a little bit slow in the middle, but if you want more action in your horror, trust me, things get really better as it nears the end.
Clickbait (2021)
Watchable (spoilers)
It kept my attention so it was good. Skipped some parts till the end, but it did keep me curious, so I do recommend it to people who like these kinds of subjects. The relationship between the reporter guy and his boyfriend was the only ship I was rooting for. They were so cute together!!! Until they had that disagreement that is. It was a great portrayal of lgbt characters for a tv show. Also liked the girl the older brother was chatting online and met irl. The end reveal felt like it came from somewhere random. It didn't come from nowhere, since the show did make it seem like everyone was a suspect from the first episode. But the motivation, for the culprit to do what they did, felt very lacking and unsatisfactory. I wanted a better build up. Part of the enjoyment of these thriller mysteries is to figure out the reasonings for the killing by yourself before the big reveal. But the show didn't allow the viewers to feel that satisfaction of dissecting the parts and putting them all together. All these episodes, were just their attempts to mislead the viewer into thinking the main leads were the killer. I'd probably felt better if the reveal was that Nick actually killed himself than it being some random background character, whom he happened to entrust his passwords and confide his personal life with.
The White Lotus (2021)
It was cringe and beautiful
I was half expecting every main character to die at the end. In fact, I wanted everyone to die. Whether that was the show's intention or not, I don't know. But the dramas surrounding all of them were super cringe and boring, I was just eagerly anticipating someone to die till the end. But that death scene and all the stuff leading up to it was not satisfying at all. It's worth the watch if you're into a lot of cringe humor and dramas involving mundane relationships, and scenes with lots of drugs. It's also worth watching if you love dark humor with beautiful visuals like Midsommar. I watched it because I was half expecting it to be like Midsommar. The visuals, the editing of the scenes are just stunningly gorgeous, but the story didn't live up to it, so I skipped a lot of parts till I found out who died and why. It was beautiful, but not worth rewatching.
Now You See Me (2013)
Visually entertaining
I'm really glad I finally watched this. It really kept me entertained, the characters were interesting, the action scene kept coming nonstop like an exciting magic show in of itself. There were also plenty of plot holes, especially the romance between the french lady cop and the plot twist magician cop was really sudden and not convincing, but overall, it was a very enjoyable movie that kept me guessing till the very end. The characters were the very reason why I was so invested in this despite all the ridiculous stuff, the hypnotist and the card throwing guy were my favorites. I was also interested in Morgan Freeman's character, and the twist reveal that everything actually revolved around him was pretty fascinating. I know there's a sequel but heard it isn't as good as the first, so I don't know if I'll watch that.
The Mitchells vs the Machines (2021)
Cringe Fest the Movie
Okay, it was created by the same people who used the same style to create the Spider Verse movies.
I don't think I can change my mind about the characters in this film.
The creativity is definitely there, but everything else besides the visuals are just cringe.
I hated this movie, not just because it was cringe, but because it uses a song of an artist I cherish deeply. I just wish it was not used in such a ludicrous and cringey story.
I get it's popularity, a lot of people like it, especially YouTubers for it's all style no substance story telling. I get it. It's Creative and easy to understand heart warming family content right?
Kids will love it, and I can't blame them.
Psycho Goreman (2020)
Overall Good
I liked it because I expected to like it from the trailer. The characters, the story itself was original and good. I half expected Psycho Goreman to go back on his promise, but that didn't happen, and I think that's fine, because it makes sense from the tone of the whole film. A lot of people are complaining about Mimi but I thought she needed to be the way she was for the plot to work out. It also put's the audience on edge, wondering whether she might die because of her toxic portrayal. The only complaint I have is the ball game they have before the showdown between PG and the Angelic character. I thought it could have been a lot more intense, than playing a simple dodgeball like game. It made the scene look like a costume game party. I wanted the fight scenes to feel more action packed. I wanted it to feel more like watching powerful galactic beings trying to destroy each other. Instead, it felt like watching a fight scene full of costumed people. But I get it, that is exactly what the creators were going for, and the costume designs were not bad at all so I guess I can't complain. As many people have said, it's a clear cut love it or hate type of film.
