Contagion (2011)
Great movie with a realistic look at a global pandemic.
This is a great movie if you're looking to see how a global pandemic would play out or if you're just looking for a good thriller. The movie's flow was smooth and clear with a believable storyline other than a couple of holes here and there. The movie wasn't short of any top actors, and it showed, Gwyneth Paltrow, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, and Laurence Fishburne all performed well throughout the movie adding drama and action and accurately playing their roles. As far as the pandemic goes the movie accurately showed different procedures and precautions that would be taken in a pandemic and how deadly a virus could spread no matter the precautions taken. Where there is a suspension of disbelief is at the end of the movie where it shows how the virus started. The way the virus passed down from a bat to a pig and then from human to human isn't realistic, and even if it was able to pass through all of that it would most likely lose its lethality. Other than that, the movie gives you an accurate look into a pandemic and human nature in a time of panic and chaos.
Medicine Man (1992)
More romance, less adventure.
"Medicine Man" is a good movie if you're looking for a rainforest romance. This ends up being more of a relationship movie than an action/adventure, and there's nothing wrong with that but the movie could have been exceptionally better with some more action and adventure in the plot. Adding those elements to the storyline could have improved the conflict over finding the cure for cancer, which is the main point of the movie. There were a few holes in the movie when it showed Dr. Campbell and Dr. Crane using technology and lights in the middle of a rainforest, and the serum they were using to cure the cancer would heal the patient overnight, but other than that the flow of the movie was pretty smooth. Overall, the acting from Sean Connery and Lorraine Bracco turn this into a solid movie. - Nick C.
Contagion (2002)
Could of been good, but poorly executed.
"Contagion" had a lot of potential behind its story line that was brought down by bad acting and times where it was just silly, like THE ENDING. The flow of the movie was pretty smooth but became choppy here and there, and there were a few side plots going on that just didn't fit in. When it comes to the acting I have mixed emotions, at times I felt like the characters emotions were on point and other times they were just bland. What really killed the movie was all the holes in the story line. The movie starts out by catching your attention with a huge panic and all the characters taking precautions and then it falls apart from there. Characters begin walking around the hospital in lab suits contaminated with all kinds of bacteria, no one is wearing any protective equipment, and I guess by quarantine they mean people can just run around the hospital whenever they want. All in all, I think the movie had a good story behind the Ebola Virus with valid science, but it was a bad movie due to the silly acting. -Nick Chrisco
The Happening (2008)
Intriguing storyline, but poorly executed.
"The Happening" left me with a mutual feeling. I thought the storyline was interesting, it makes you question if what unfolded in the movie could actually happen in the world we live in today. Throughout the movie the science was based off factual points with far-fetched things here and there, this made the movie engaging because you were able to decide what side of the line certain things fell, the science fiction side or the science factual side. What killed the movie for me was the acting and plot. The actors didn't accurately express their emotions, I found myself cringing at some points because of the way they were expressing their emotions. The plot could of used some more action and conflict, after the first city scene leaves you shocked the movie goes into a stage of empty fields without civilization which allows for good scenery but it leaves a lot of questions to be asked, and there is conflict every now and then but not of the same magnitude as the opening scene. All in all, the storyline saved the movie for me, I wouldn't recommend it but it wasn't a terrible movie.
