Wine Country (2019)
Well worth a watch
Listen. I'm sat here looking at the opening credits wondering why I'm watching this film for the third time in three years... I cannot believe it was released in 2019, I watched it twice in that year and now in 2021... the last film I watched more than once is The Imitation Game, so this must be good right. Having recently watched Parks and Rec, as well as every Amy Phoeler thing I can find, I wanted to watch this film again with her other work in mind.
Anyway, you don't need anymore of my life story- I think this is a funny film made by good, creative people.
Chaos Walking (2021)
I love Patrick Ness' work
I read the first, and got halfway through the second books in the trilogy a few years ago, I wanted to reread or at least finish them before I watched the movie but since it only takes on the first book I figured I didn't need to. I therefore don't remember the book plot exactly, but found that alot of what happened in the movie doesn't match my memory or the significant points in the books that I enjoyed. Overall I am disappointed by this movie and would recommend the books over the film, or at least deter people who enjoyed the books from watching this. But to be fair if they make two more movies I'll watch them haha.
Judging this as a film, rather than a book to movie adaptation; the graphics are good, the score is pretty decent, the pacing is alright, the cinematography isn't bad and the acting is good. I wouldn't say any of these filmic elements are anything to write home about- but they make for a good and watchable film. It's just the story has run into some areas that feel disjointed, rushed or haphazard due it's origins and on-again-off-again journey to the screen.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Complete nonsense but we enjoyed it :)
Of course there were issues like continuity and plot holes, and many many questions. But I hope you're not watching this for intellectual stimulation, you're thinking of watching this because it's a alien invasion action film- a good bit of fun, you can sit at the edge of your seat in suspense and shout when they make stupidly brave desicions, and sit quietly when they have emotional revelations. Its a really good movie for it's genre. Side bonus: Chris Pratt delivers some of his most dramatic and mature acting I've seen him perform.
Cruella (2021)
I did enjoy Cruella but...
I guess I didn't get attached to her character. It was too predictable in its childish Disney way. It was classic villain origin story of parent killed by someone but misinterpreted as another thing. So after a third of the film being devil wears Prada, we resolve the misunderstanding- resulting in a 'villainous twist' which leads to the second third which is just a heist film. Then after that there is a second mission which feels as though it should be another episode or movie in and of itself. Then it ends.
I liked the costumes but I feel as though Cruella's could have been better still. They were quite high fashion and not what I expected based on 1- the original Cruella and 2- the initial window display outfit in this film. I do appreciate the idea that she grows into the old Cruella devil, by starting off young and modern, but I wish there was more scary unhinged stuff.
People say this film is dark for Disney standards but I disagree. I have been more scared and traumatized by Disney's old animated films/villains (lion king). The film tries to put you on Cruella's side, she isn't a villain by the end- even though she has become the one thing she sought to destroy- we are expected to forgive her for her crimes because of her tragic backstory.
Cruella is meant to kill Dalmatians later in life, but this film doesn't touch on that future hatred for the dogs, instead she spares them. I don't know how this Cruella ends up being future Cruella- but I'm sure Disney will make another film to try and bridge the gap.
The ending- specifically how she survived the fall- was ridiculous, I'd have preferred she died honestly as that would have been interesting and heartwarming actually: to chose justice over cruelty, one final act by Estella. They could have justified future Cruella in that scenario by having it just be another crazy lady who took on the persona of Cruella to finish what she started.
Trainwreck (2015)
It's not the worst film you've watched
I had very low expectations for this film, I'm not a fan of Amy and this film didn't change my mind about her. But I was surprised that it was better than expected :)
It may be becuase I'm lonely and single and will take anything at this point, but I did enjoy the romance in this film. Bill Hader's performance was really sweet and I really enjoyed the resolution of their arc.
So overall will this fim be a classic? No, of course not. But is it a decent film to watch when you want to wallow in your loneliness and occasionally giggle, sure thing.
The Incredible Jessica James (2017)
Great potential
As has been mentioned by other people, the protagonist doesn't come across properly I don't think, she's a bit rude, self centred and childish. I think this story would have been much better suited to a TV show format. But not a bad film to watch when you can't seem to find anything else. Always love Chris O'Dowd, he has a great way of playing love interests where you genuinely believe he just worships her. Something about the eyes I think :)
All Is True (2018)
simply put- beautiful
It's hard to say what could have been improved upon in this film.
I don't know my history so I can't comment on It's accuracy.
The cinematography was marvellous.
The acting, writing and overall production was very good.
I think with the genre and type of film this is in mind (peaceful and intimate) I don't see how this film could be badly reviewed.
It was a wonderful film.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
I don't understand these bad reviews- it's an action film, and it's amazing one.
I watched this film before reading reviews and was left baffled and frustrated with the bad reviews for John Wick 3. People have complained about poor story and boring action scenes; I don't watch action films for the story, I don't expect to be emotionally moved or learn something profound by the end credits. I do however watch for incredible cinematography, soundtrack, and action- which this film absolutely delivers. So I wholeheartedly disagree with any review below 6 stars.
Some moments in the film certainly push how far you can suspend your disbelief, you will probably sit there thinking "there's no way he can get out of this" and you'll definitely see stunt actors patiently waiting their turn to hit Keanu Reeves. But even then, it's not as unrealistic as some films where the stunt men stand there for multiple beats before leaping to their punch. Because at the end of the day, you'll be very hard pushed to find an exciting action film in which there aren't people waiting their turn to be killed.
At the beginning of the film there is a truly epic fight sequence that is masterful in my opinion, and I would recommend this film purely for that scene. Hand to hand combat can be silly or fantastic and this John Wick fight scene early on in the film immediately earned top spot among my favourite action sequences. The choreographers, actors and stunt people involved should be highly commended- I was on the edge of my seat and contorted in all kinds of positions throughout the film.
While other action sequences and scenes had me contorted and on the edge of my seat, that first one (I think you'll know the one I mean when you watch the film) remained the best.
So no- I can't give this 10 stars, even though it's now my favourite non-Jason Bourne action film, because it does lack some story elements and did have me disconnected in one ridiculously improbable stand off scene. But 9 stars means I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this film and ask that you ignore all the bad reviews becuase this is a very well made film and deserves high praise.
It's an action film at the end of the day- the people giving bad reviews were watching the wrong film honestly.
Like asking an apple to be a tomato, they're both round but an apple sauce doesn't go with pasta the same way tomato sauce does, they were asking the wrong things of this action film.
(Side note- nowhere is this film categorised as a comedy but I would say it is)
