Knight and Day (2010)
Fun and playful
If you go into this film with low expectations (or none at all), you'll have a good time. Don't take this movie seriously as it's not a serious movie; a lot of the reviewers apparently didn't get that. Ignore the fact that it's Tom and Cameron on the screen. Just get some popcorn, sit back, relax, and enjoy 109 minutes of fun.
One of the things I really like about this movie is that Tom and Cameron seem to be having a great time making this film. It comes through on screen and translates well into the energy necessary to drive the movie.
If you don't like Tom Cruise or Cameron Diaz, do NOT see this film.
Jake and the Never Land Pirates (2011)
One Word: Fail
Disney missed the boat on this one (literally). It has no redeeming educational value and our child is annoyed with it completely. He'll ask for Mickey Mouse, but as soon as this show starts he asks for something else. We usually use the time to go outside or read a story, so it's been good for that...but, with all the possibilities that exist in Neverland, Disney didn't use it to full effect.
If it has any redeeming quality whatsoever, the voices of Captain Hook and Ensign Smee are actually really good imitations of some very difficult voices from the original movie. Too bad that's not enough to make it watchable.
And all of this may sound harsh, but come on! It's Disney!! They should know better!!!
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (2006)
Educational and entertaining
Our son loves it and asks for it by name. There are times that, as adults, his mother and I get annoyed with the simplistic nature of the show, but it's not written for us. :) He loves it! He learned to count from this show. Also, we can get him to exercise by saying "Hot Dog dance"! He also loves to sing along with the different melodies of the show (written by They Might Be Giants, no less).
And I can't stress this enough. There are a lot of kids' shows out there and most are annoying to an Nth degree, but this show has captured the magic of Disney. And in that way, it is like Disney itself: either you love it or hate it.
I have to give it a 10 only because I know it's written for my child, not me, and it does give him what we want from a TV show. Great job guys!
Yo Gabba Gabba! (2007)
This is a great show to catch
Yo Gabba Gabba is fun and educational. The songs are catchy, and teach lessons that need to be learned. It is brightly colored, and there are themes and it makes it fun and exciting for children of a certain age. And anything that gets kids off the couch and learning at the same time while being fun will always get my vote.
The producers are musicians and incorporate music into every show. My 7 month old looks forward to the show and will actively try to watch it. He and I dance to the songs and for half an hour he can't tear his eyes away from the TV. Obviously it's not a substitute for education, but it is a fun way to spend half an hour.
I can't wait until the DVDs come out!
