Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain (2023)
How was this made?
I must be missing something huge here. How did Conan O'Brien and John Goodman sign off on being a part of this film? The main three characters were horrific rip-offs and unfunny versions of the Workaholics. The plot was non-existent, but if I had to compare it to anything, I'd say it's a terrible ripoff of "Without a Paddle." Maybe they were trying for "The Package," which to me was surprisingly hilarious. Bottom line, there was nothing funny, nothing original, and the comedy group that made this should be embarrassed for using whatever nepotism they must possess for getting this made. I'm sure those guys are funny doing improve, but this movie was impossible to watch.
On the Count of Three (2021)
Dark, Funny, Brilliant
I can't think of many films that can successfully pull off extremely dark, depressing subject matter while still being hilarious and heartwarming at the same time. Trainspotting is one that comes to mind. This is not like Trainspotting, but it hit my gut and tickled my funny bone in a similar way. I've never heard of Jerrod Carmichael or the team of genius writers behind this, but I look forward to seeing more from all of them. This was a brilliant film with amazing performances from the leads Carmichael and Christopher Abbott. The surprising cameos sprinkled in show how impressive the writing was from first time film makers. Keep these coming and I'll keep watching!
End of the Road (2022)
How did this get released?
I love a good road trip movie, and I love a good action movie with car chases. Queen Latifah and Beau Bridges are great actors. I'm not on board with other reviewers complaining about social commentary. The movie attempted to make some real valid points. Unfortunately they leaned to hard these issues in a basic stereotypical way and left out everything else that makes for a good movie. I wish I could put it more eloquently, but this was just a stupid, cheesy movie. Terrible dialogue, terrible acting, boring and predictable storyline, and clearly poor direction. This could've been a fun movie, but it ended up being something a teenage YouTuber could've done with they're friends if they'd been given a few million bucks.
The Bear (2022)
Amazing!
I'm absolutely loving this show. It's almost too real if you've worked in a kitchen. I just finished episode 7 which is a "oner," (meaning they shot the entire episode in one take without cutting.) It was brilliantly choreographed and acted, albeit stressful to watch. 10 stars from me.
The Orville (2017)
Seasons 1-2 Great. Season 3 is bad
Not sure what McFarland was thinking with season three. The first two seasons were an intelligent, funny spoof on Star Trek that still had a lot of adventure. Season three is a cheesy, boring daytime soap set in space. All the comedy is gone. I really enjoyed the first two seasons and tried to watch the third, but I'm giving up. I can't get through it.
Hi praise for the first two, but I wouldn't suggest waisting your time on the third.
The Valet (2022)
Cute feel good rom-com
Eugenio Derbez is amazing. In this he's playing the opposite of the swagger and confidence of the CODA music teacher. This was a cute fun comedy that's better than it looks on paper. Definitely worth a watch on a date or a family movie night.
The Batman (2022)
Solid new take on an overly rebooted character
I thought I was done with Batman movies, but I decided to give this a shot. This seems like an unpopular opinion, but this is my favorite one since Tim Burton's first version. It's less flashy or "comic bookish" and more noir. Almost has a hint of Seven. I wish they had gone fully dark with a hard R version, but I'm sure profits affected that decision. Still I thought it was a solid take on an overly rebooted comic.
The Midnight Meat Train (2008)
Could've Been Good.
It started promising and kept me interested enough to watch the entire movie. Unfortunately the 3rd act digresses into torture/gore porn and has a very depressing ending. I think they were attempting a "Se7enish" conclusion that they didn't come close to achieving.
