Almost Human (2013)
Reboot of a series from years ago but different enough
As I watched the promos for this show during the baseball playoffs and World Series, I remembered a previous show with the same idea: a human cop and an android partner. On this show, called "Mann and Machine" though, the android was a female. It only lasted one season.
I watch a fair number of cop shows and this one isn't that bad. Hopefully they can develop the relationship between Kennex and Dorian (is that the android's first or last name?) without reverting to clichés and gag lines.
But I do see some problems. Predicting the future is fraught with danger and if this show is to be believable, you have to accept that technology will have advanced to the point where Dorian is a credible character. Data in Star Trek TNG was credible but he was several hundred years beyond our time. Is 35 years far enough ahead?
Not of This Earth (1988)
A decent remake of the 1957 horror flick.
I rented this out of curiosity to see how they remade the 1957 version which I saw several times as a youngster. The remake was fun to watch even though there is quite a bit of T & A which has very little to do with the plot. They retained much of what I remember from the original including a lot of the dialog, Johnson driving a 50's boat-tail Cadillac, his 5-phase mission, the metal case where Johnson first put the blood of his victims, Nadine's boyfriend being a policeman, and, of course, the ending. One notable omission was that the doctor wasn't killed.
It would be great if the original could be successfully transferred to DVD.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
A film marriage
My girlfriend's mother advised us to see this movie and we were not disappointed.
I look at this movie as more a character study than pure comedy or ethnic humor. I also see the movie as a marriage of two other films: "Meet the Parents" and "Fiddler on the Roof". For those that have seen both of these, the relationships will be obvious.
