Black Box (2020)
Solid horror/thriller film with a unique story and twist !
I'm loving that we are starting to get more horror films with black leads ! I saw Phylicia Rashad and Blumhouse and that instantly reeled me in. The performances are fantastic, especially from the lead actor , the young girl , and Rashad. I see a lot of people saying it really isn't a horror movie . I disagree . Horror doesn't always have to be slasher killers or ghosts and demons . I think the idea of going inside our subconscious can be very horrifying . So this indeed portrayed horror for me. It also has some very creepy imagery and an excellent score . Overall good movie that i recommend
True Horror (2018)
Much better and much more realistic than the horrid "Haunted" on Netflix
I'm a big horror fan and love watching real-live testimonies from people . I tried out the show "Haunted" and it was so painfully scripted . The dramatizations were cheap , the stories were unrealistic with massive plot holes , and it was so painfully obvious that these people giving "testimonies" were actors . True Horror however , is exactly what I sought out in Haunted . You can tell these people are speaking off the dome from real life experiences and the actors for the dramatizations are great too. Got chills from many of the episodes . Great show !
Bones (2001)
Cult classic film with homage to blaxploitation horror !
I feel like the bad reviews for this film are due to people taking the film too seriously which wasn't the intent . This film serves as an homage to blaxploitation films that were popular in the 70s and 80s, while also serving as a satirical tribute to slasher films also popular during that era . aside from our main casts, the characters are baseless and undeveloped to the point that the film sometimes comes off as a parody . The gore and effects also come off cheap at times, but I guess that's apart of the charm of this film . I also notice the premise sort of pays homage to Candyman in regards to race-relations, gangs, and the drugs within the community
I thought the film also has an entangling storyline . good movies are supposed to give a backstory to our main antagonist in a way that we feel somewhat empathetic with them . That's exactly what this film does with our main antagonist Snoop Dogg who gives a great performance as Jimmy Bones and is enticing when on the screen . In a way we begin to root for him and his vengeance against the less like-able (and quite frankly soul-less) characters .Pam Grier also gives a great performance as Jimmy's lover . ironically she was also the star of the blaxploitation film "Foxy Brown" , so it was great seeing her in a film that pays homage to an era she was apart of .
Overall I think this film has its flaws , but it was pretty damn solid and enjoyable to watch . Over the years it's gotten its cult following and rightfully so. Bones is a great staple in black horror
