Candyman (2021)
Not bad but could've been better...
Candyman is not a bad movie per se, but I feel like it deviated from the original movies. I'm all for addressing current issues, discussing them and eventually solving them, it just feels like they hijacked a popular movie franchise - one of the best IMHO - to do that.
There is a time and place for everything; more importantly, c'mon now, where is Tony Todd?? A brief cameo at the end isn't cutting it.
I would've liked to see more people fall victim to his hook hand, more suspense, more details about the Candyman lore.
Fans of Clive Barkers' works no doubt noticed the missing detail in almost all of his films/books - towards the end, the protagonist always morphs into the antagonist. Helen Lyle in the original Candyman, Leon in The Midnight Meat Train, etc.
"Be my victim".
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Season 5 went downhill
It seems the original writers were fired and replaced by a bunch of 5th graders. That's how substandard season 5 is in comparison to previous seasons.
This is the worst episode of season 5.
3 stars for the latest season, at least a 9 for the rest.
George Lopez: The Wall, Live from Washington D.C. (2017)
Not the George Lopez I remember.....
I love his old stand up, but what happened here was that this show consisted of 75% complaining about trump and 25% comedy :(
It could have been so much better had it been the other way around, better yet, maybe 5% complaints about trump and 95% we get the old, hilarious George Lopez back.
Hush (2016)
....basically "Vacancy" sans quality storytelling/plot....
In all honesty this movie deserves a 5/10 for effort, 3/10 for the actual movie.
1) This premise has been done to death, and in much more effective ways. At certain times the antagonist seems like he forgot the cameras were rolling and just stood there with a blank, bovine expression on his face, pretty indifferent. That mask he was wearing was similar to the one in "Vacancy" but IMHO looked a bit out of place, not frightening in the least.
2) Very slow paced, even when it picks up. While the initial scenes make us anticipate a truly scary experience, it never arrives. Absolutely no explanation as to who the antagonist is or his motivations for stalking/attempting to murder the protagonist. In the movie "Vacancy" the audience is almost immediately informed as to why this is happening, hence there is considerably more sympathy and attachment to the characters than in this movie.
3) They could have done with a well placed music score to set the mood, the camera work is actually quite good, but that's it.
4) All things considered, if there is absolutely nothing else to watch, check it out, if you want a quality movie of a similar nature, albeit done in a much better way, check out "Vacancy".
