Coldblooded (1995)
Finally! A dark comedy that is truly funny!
I rented this movie a few years ago on a friend's recommendation. I did not want to see it, strictly because of Jason Priestly. Boy was I wrong! This is one of those rare gems that you wish you could show to all your friends. This movie is what others like "The Big Hit" and such crime/comedy movies WISH they could be. It is smartly written, greatly acted (and subtly acted, no over-the-top histreonics as an attempt at humor) and excellently cast. Robert Logia is fantastic as the new Mob leader. Priestly is great as the title role. Please watch this movie with an open mind and be ready to be shocked, both at the black humor, and at the intelligence and care the story receives.
Lost Highway (1997)
Why?
I hated this movie. I have never been subject to watching a director masturbate on film before. This was the single most pompous, pretentious, overly "artsy" movie I have seen since "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover", and I hated it almost as much as "The Cook..." I think "jacob's Ladder" did a much better job of "filming a nightmare", as was stated by a previous review.
There is nothing worse than watching Patricia Arquette trying to be DEEP.
I would rather sit through "Hercules in New York".
I know many many people that love this movie and not one of them can give me a reason. I think it is because they feel that Lynch is a "genius" and that his B.S. fiolms must be masterpieces on account of that. Not one person has given me a reason why they like it, besides "It was so beautifully filmed." Blah Blah Blah. If movies are a storytelling medium than this film has decided to forego that and just show you style. I will hate this for the rest of my life vehemently.
Hardware (1990)
Pure stripped down true cyberpunk
I have read all the reviews for this movie here at imdb and I have to disagree with those who were expecting some sort of "spectacular" Hollywood sci-fi flick a la Terminator or Aliens. This movie is the best adaptation yet of what, in text form, would be a taut and harsh cyberpunk sci-fi short story. I am a big fan of sci-fi lit, and always feel that sci-fi movies try too hard to include plot points and characters that appeal to masses, as opposed to just concentrating on the story. If you are a fan of "pulp" literature, and cyberpunk you will love this movie. There are many "unanswered" questions, (which is pointed out by some of the reviewers as a flaw). This is not a flaw. It is a choice by the director. Anyone familiar with Edgar Allan Poe would know that for a taut, effective story there should be nothing added which does not propel the plot. Having asides about how the world became so desolate and boring explanations to "bring people up to date" is anathema to the cyberpunk genre. You are expected to be sophisticated enough to know that those details are irrelevant to the story, once the setting is in place. I love this movie and feel that to compare it unfavorably to big budget FX extravaganzas with minimal plot, like "Terminator" and "Aliens" is an injustice. It is apples and oranges. I feel a better comparison is to THX 1138, or The Cube, or Pi. These were low-budget, effective, scary sci-fi movies that used what they had available, as opposed to trying to wow you with 40 minutes of FX to make up for the fact that the story is re-hashed crap. Enjoy it for what it is.
