Love at First Sight (2023)
Yawn.... Trite & Boring
Could have also been called 'Mega self absorbed and spoilt Gen Z girl fails to consider other people might have lives too'. Don't waste your life or time, except to watch Jameela Jamil, who injects some life and interest into the otherwise well trodden path of this film. I like a rom com and I don't mind if they're predictable, as long as they're well done. Found the main character annoying and narcissistic - far from adorable. Bloke is painted as the typical awkward, introvert but rather sweet Brit. There is the token quirky weirdo in the form of Blokes brother (Notting Hill did this trope better). We've seen the main combo done numerous times before, and better. Thank god for a decent supporting cast in the form of Sally Phillips and Dexter Fletcher as bloke's parents.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Long winded and over rated
I am a big fan of Christopher Nolan's work, but this just didn't do it for me at all. Dialogue heavy and plain boring in parts, it was a very long winded and laboured journey. Frankly, I'm also starting to get fed up with the lack of female representation in his films.... I saw Barbie and that was much more enjoyable! I'm not saying the film isn't well shot, well acted, or has gravitas, but it was way, way overdone and so very long. When I went to the loo, I thought about having a coffee and going back to my partner when the film was further along. I hope his next film is better - I usually love his style, but not this!
War of the Worlds (2019)
A really good, intelligent slow burner
So refreshing to have a series that builds. Really well written, some great acting and a compelling plot. Not some fast paced overly CGI shoot them up that is action, action, action - a very welcome step up from the usual Hollywood type science fiction fare. The European flavour and range of characters is nicely diverse. The complexity of the characters makes it a good study of humanness.
The story unfolds over the three series and gets better and better in my opinion - it's moves from the initial attack, incorporating some excellent plot twists. It is dark, atmospheric and very real. I am enjoying it immensely!
Falling for Christmas (2022)
Contrived, cliched... what's not to love?!
Come on people, we know what we're getting here.... It's a smaltz fest with extra cheese and corn! Let's just love it for what it is! And love LL for who she is. Good on yer luv for finding your way and being the romcom goddess you are :) LL - KOKO. You did a mediocre script proud. You're a great actress! I mean, who could rock that magneta fur like you did.... It's a cookie cutter hallmark movie - but the characters are likeable and there's a couple of genuine comedy moments. The pampered boyfriend is amusing. Christmas fluff! Sit down, put your thinking brain aside and just enjoy it for the over the top, saccharine shot it is...
The Vast of Night (2019)
Vast is the dialogue and irritating characters more like!
Mr too cool for school teams up with verbose shouting teen for what felt like the longest 90 minutes ever... I was hoping it would improve, but the only thing that went up was the word count and the volume of the female character. Literally NOTHING happens until 10 minutes from the end where they clearly blew the special FX budget.... but at least she shut up then!
Finding Joe (2011)
Clumsy and narrow
I'm a big fan of Campbell's work and I think he would be turning in his grave at this... dumbed down, applied to white men, middle class, bliss equalling success versus meaning, and heavily ideologically alighted to capitalism. The visual asides between the speakers are excruciating. Don't bother.
