Desserts (1999)
Awesome!!!
Hilarious and shocking at the end. I was definitely not expecting it. Kind of makes you think about where missing persons go... I will never look at a beach or piece of dessert the same way again. Everyone I show this short to likes it. So watch it!
The Believer (2001)
Powerful w/tiny spoilers
I will admit it; I only wanted to see this film because Ryan Gosling is in it. Forgive me, I am a 17 year old female who loved "Young Hercules". But, in this role, Ryan plays a character so different from all of his others that I was a bit disoriented. I got really lucky and managed to snag a copy of the review tape from a local newspaper film reviewer. The film was supposed to be shown on Showtime but still hasn't.
This is one of the most incredible films that I have ever seen. The characters are so...well...human. I love the fact that the main character Danny could never really escape from the beliefs that he was brought up with. I really identified with him on that level because I am a Wiccan and have a love/hate relationship with Christianity. I also love the fact that he wavers a little in his convictions, unlike characters in say American History X which also deal with neo-nazism.
The other thing I really like about this film is that you can talk and talk and talk about it. I have shown a clip of it to fellow students in my Mass Media class during a presentation of mine about Independant Film. (the "Look what was accomplished with the death of just one enlightened jew, imagine if we killed them all" scene) They seemed pretty shocked. It is not a movie that people are used to seeing. I also lent it out to an Independant Film buff in that same class and we talked about it just about every day for a week. There are just so many levels to the film.
Personally, my favorite moment is when Danny's love interest has sex with another guy right in front of him. The look on his face is just priceless. It looks like sadness, hurt, pity, regret, and a bunch of other emotions.
Also, unlike probably quite a few others, I thought the ending perfectly suited the story. It shows that even in death we can not escape what we have been taught, no matter how much we try to run away.
Virtual Sexuality (1999)
Watch it, Watch it, Watch it!
I love this movie. I just saw it for the first time about 10 hours ago and had to rewind it so that my sister could watch it. This movie is so funny. There are two times that I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. I didn't expect to watch a movie so funny; I really only wanted to see it because Laura Fraser is in it. I first saw her in Titus which is an awesome movie as well.
Like others reviewers have said, too many people are expecting a deep moving film. You are not going to get it. What you will get is humor, eye candy and the chance to ask yourself exactly what your perfect mate would look like if you could create them. You can also wonder what it would be like to be stuck in the body of the opposite sex.
A hilarious sequence involves Justine first seeing herself as a naked man. I was cracking up.
I swear, this movie is the most imaginative teen film that I have ever seen and it is now my favorite.
Just remember why movies were originally created; as entertainment not philosophy in motion. Remember this and you will have a great time watching Virtual Sexuality.
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)
From the bottom of my heart...
I just want to say thank you to Kevin Smith. And thank you to Miramax for greenlighting this enormous inside joke for us View Askew fans. Never have I had so much fun in a movie theater, aside from my sneaking into my first R-rated movie(Damn the MPAA!). This film keeps you with a smile on your face, especially with the blink or you'll miss it "Snowball"/Grizzly Adams, Jay's "Berserker" shirt, and the Buddy Christ on Carrie Fisher's dashboard. This film is a fitting end to the "New Jersey 'Trilogy'," which has provided us with great quotes and memories. For me, it has always been memories of my parents' faces and comments about the films. "How did you see Clerks?!?" "This is inappropriate!" "Turn it off." Thanks for everything, especially inspiration for us future filmmakers.
