The Cursed (2021)

Fun lil horror but definitely a slow burn
1 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I have mixed feelings for this film. I enjoyed the film for what it was, especially it being about werewolves, but felt it lacked in some areas. The main reasoning is that I feel it was just a *bit* too slow. But I think that could've been fixed by not making the film quite as long as it is.

I think mainly why it felt too slow was that there were not characters to cling to. Everyone felt disposable and you barely got any info on the ones who were on screen most of the time.

But it did grab my attention during all the wolf scenes and I appreciated all the gore. Didn't expect much but it's in there plenty. All in all I had a good time with this film. Probably wouldn't watch again but it was a nice horror film for Sundance 2021.

Intense and Sometimes Shocking
1 February 2021
I really did enjoy this film. It was brutal, tension filled, and I liked the fact that these many acts of violence weren't just "cause we wanted too" but that there was an actual reasoning behind it.

The directing was brilliant, the sound design was spot on, the performances were top notch... my only complaint is the script. It starts off so strong but loses its way towards the end. I think for a film that answers most of your questions, the ending just leaves you with more that you didn't even know you had. I also think the running time was just a tad bit long.

But these are just my own opinions. I truly think if you love thrillers or slow burn horror (this film definitely gives off horror vibes) than it is definitely worth your time.

Intense, Original Story
1 February 2021
Wowowowow. I went into this thinking it would be a bit more graphic, I guess I would say, but it wasn't. And that was perfectly okay.

This film got under my skin. Charlie Shotwell plays this part too well. He made me feel so nervous the entire film and I still can't shake those feelings. This film does such a great job at building tension due to Charlie's performance and also the score (I'm obsessed).

Yes, this film doesn't necessarily build up to anything but I was totally okay with that. The ending is so ominous... almost terrifying in a way. It works for what we we're shown.

My only complaint is the scenes spread throughout of a child being told the story of John and the Hole?? I'm still a little lost on that front and kinda wish they'd left that out.

I'm very excited to see who snags this one up. Honestly seems like a film A24 would be racing to get their hands on. Very excited to see how more people react to this film.

A Fantasy and Horror Gem

SUNDANCE 2021 REVIEW -

Holy cow, this film was phenomenal. Caught it during the virtual Sundance screening and I am still in awe. This film was so wild and imaginative. It borders on horror and fantasy but brings the two together beautifully.

Carlson Young is already an amazing actor (and this film just proves that ten fold) but to see her directing skills? I cannot get enough. The way she has the audience view this film deserves a whole essay on its own.

I have many more thoughts but gotta rush to make the next screening.

Absolutely loved this film to pieces and it's symbology. I'm so excited to see who picks this one up because it deserves to be seen by a broader audience!

Wrong Turn (2021)

Feeling very torn...
31 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER-FREE

I just got out of seeing this and I am torn. It's a fun horror film, yes, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the Wrong Turn franchise. I kept waiting for the moment those favorite hillbilly cannibals of mine to pop up... and they never did.

I don't know if I just had different expectations and it was assumed this would be about something else entirely? But I feel like a clown for hyping myself up for this. Drove an hour and a half for this, hoping for the best and instead I got some weird mix of Wrong Turn, The Village and Tomb Raider???

If you're in it for the sake of Wrong Turn, just skip it. But if you want to watch a fun-at-times lil horror film than you'd probably get a kick out of this.

Sad times.
