For All Mankind (2019)
Desperately trying to like this
But failing. I really like series with the alternate history trope which it does quite well with the Cold War pushing bases on the moon and missions to mars . However this is a sort of space soap opera meets woke captain America. You can almost predict what "life challenges" they have in store for the protagonists before you even read a synopsis of each episode. Can't see it lasting beyond a third season.
Night Sky (2022)
Very original character drive Sci Fi Drama
My test for giving a show a good rating is that I have to resist binge watching it. This and Amazon's Tales from the Loop we're both very good "human" Sci Fi . I loved this series slow pace which gave opportunity for character development to "breath". The only thing that worries me are that shows on Amazon tend to be very easily cancelled.
The Essex Serpent (2022)
Ok if you suspend your disbelief
Lovely cinematography and the writing is quite original. But it's so far fetched at times it's farcical. People in the Victorian era especially men and women did not interact like that, no matter how progressive/radical they were.
Sort of Godzilla versus the millennials :)
The Flight Attendant: Blue Sincerely Reunion (2022)
Starting to go downhill
Seemed like lots of needless running around that does not advance the plot. Seems like filler and new characters introduced for no good reason. Hate these US dramas and the need to have an A and B plots and engineer cliff hangers.
Stay Close (2021)
Well this one ain't based on a true story
Rather far fetched plot twists and a few plot holes. But the depth of the characters and some excellent acting saved it. Actually rather enjoyed it for all that.
Landscapers (2021)
Slow burner this one
People have criticised this for the fantasy sequences. However in this case/story the truth is often stranger than fiction. I might have liked to have seen a bit more of the Edwards embezzlements and silly spending before their fleeing to France. Overall I liked it saying that I don't think the real edwards pair are anything near as interesting as how they were dramatised.
Ojing-eo geim (2021)
I have a simple metric for rating a show good
That is having to really resist binge watching it.
This has been the first Netflix show since the Sinner that has ticked that box for me.
Super atmospheric and really dystopian. That music as the walk the Esher like corridors and stairs
Only thing I didn't like was some of its odd attempts at humour but this might be a Korean cultural thing.
Invasion: Orion (2021)
I give this a high rating for one thing
The self evident truth that an EV will be pretty useless in a post apocalyptic/ breakdown of civilisation situation.
Nice one Apple educational and entertaining
Thanks 👍
Ted Lasso: Do the Right-est Thing (2021)
Season 2 is a big letdown from season 1
There is nothing in this episode that was laugh out loud funny. And the Tech Industry attack on Big Oil social commentary to me seemed like lazy writing and filler. If they think they can turn this into some kind of UK Channel 4 style comedy drama I can't see it lasting past a third season to be honest.
Star Trek: Lower Decks (2020)
Not sure what this thing is trying to be
I am guessing an adult animated comedy with the constraints of U rated jokes and confined by Star Trek canon. I don't think Rick and Morty had much to worry about.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Lovely original emotional sci fi
First show I had to stop myself binge watching in a while. The slow pacing unlike other programs of this genre builds up the tension but can make it drag a bit
Imagine blackmirror but it's not the technologies fault people's lives go wrong but people try devices that can hopefully change their reality (with their eyes open) but there is inevitably a price to pay.
The Sinner: Part VII (2020)
This is as awful as the first two series were brilliant
After innovative and creative writing in series 1 and 2 were are back to the derivative US drama story wheel. Every series 3 episode seems to end with little loops that don't advance the plot. Netflix is heading towards the door with me
