No Hard Feelings (2023)
I haven't laughed through a film this much in a long time!
My friend came over and turned on this film - I thought it was going to be another cringe romcom but this film is actually incredibly funny. Jennifer Lawrence plays Maddie, a woman about to lose her home who is also in dire need of a car. She is hired by the parents of Percy, a socially (and sexually) awkward nineteen year old who is about to go to college, to date him in exchange for a free car. Jennifer Lawrence in the lead role of the film embodies a dominant female who is the bold and confident spirit that Percy needs before going off to college, and she "shows him the ropes" of a casual sexual life. It is absolutely hilarious and one of her best performances yet. I had to watch it again because it was so funny! 8/10.
Les parapluies de Cherbourg (1964)
One of the most gorgeous films ever made.
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg is an extremely underrated film that hasn't gotten the attention it deserves. My professor jokingly in class one day mentioned we should check this movie out, because he said it was better than The Sound of Music.
I decided one day to give this a watch. The cinematography, music, and beautiful colors of this film alone make it a masterpiece. The story is quite melodramatic, and in many ways the film feels like a pastel-colored angelic tragedy.
I would have to argue that the best performance in the film is Anne Vernon as Genevieve's mother. The best thing about her character (dripping in bright red) is that the audience is unable to tell if she is trustworthy or vile.
13 Reasons Why (2017)
Horrific show that romanticizes suicide and caused me to spiral a bit
I watched this show for the first time when I was sixteen years old, because everyone around me was also watching it in 2017. I was way too young to be exposed to this show at that age. When I originally saw 13 Reasons Why, the scene with the suicide in the bathtub was left in the show.
You can expect to see graphic depictions of extreme violence and self-harm, sexual assault, and language for high school students that is both cringe and unrealistic (really nobody I know just throws F bombs around like these characters do).
After watching this show I was really depressed for several weeks.
After the first season the show goes even more downhill. Avoid this one unless you want to waste valuable hours of your life watching teenagers kill themselves and get sexually assaulted with a mop.
Brand Upon the Brain! A Remembrance in 12 Chapters (2006)
I promise you've never seen anything like this.
Guy Maddin's Brand Upon the Brain is a frightening "Nancy Drew meets Freud" exploration of the nightmares within Oedipal relationship dynamics. This movie is crafted similar to the silent German expressionist directing styles of F. W Murnau and Robert Wiene. The film quite beautifully presents a son's angst due to his overbearing superego mother. The "sights and sounds" of Brand Upon the Brain narrate the film beautifully and the cinematographic work is phenomenally done. Personally I found the film to be incredibly relatable and is a good watch for people who feel tension around their parents for being too overbearing. The film would not be the same without the narration of Isabella Rossellini, whose voice gives me goosebumps.
Milchwald (2003)
A disgrace to German cinema
This movie is one of the worst German movies I have ever watched -- all of the characters are emotionless (the children literally do not cry when they are dropped off in Poland), the father is naive and an idiot, and the stepmother is a terrible person whose storyline is never solved. Nobody in the film is likable at all. I think the director was a bit weird -- the film has child nudity for a shot and children are put in uncomfortable sexual situations -- sex pops up randomly all over the film. Beyond dropping the kids off in the countryside, the story does not retell Hansel and Gretel well at all. Horrible film -- do not recommend.
Wish Upon (2017)
I WISH I never saw this movie
One of the absolute worst horror films I've ever seen. All of the jump scares were predictable, and in the trailer. Terrible, terrible movie. The acting was bad, the story was stupid, and overall it was a waste of time.
