Son of Rambow (2007)
Beautiful, Funny, Deeply Moving
I am so grateful that I was able to see a preview of this sweet, wonderful film last night.
From the trailer, I expected a funny, cute, warm movie. Son of Rambow was all that, and SO MUCH more. The performances by the two main characters were outstanding. The depth of emotion, and honest, gripping portrayals blew me away. I was quite surprised to hear that neither boy had acted before. Natural, mesmerizing talent.
The film is fun to watch, and very funny at times, but it goes so much deeper. The issues of parental abandonment, social isolation, and religious repression are seen and felt, without editorial commentary. On a personal level, I related so strongly to little Will, struggling to find his own way, and listen to his own inner guidance, at the risk of shaming his family in the eyes of their cult.
This film is a fun, entertaining and deeply touching treat.
I highly recommend it to all.
Sleepwalking (2008)
Hmmm...sorry, but it IS Horrible
The trailer suckered me in. I enjoy deep, character driven films, with themes of family bonds, forgiveness, redemption, overcoming one's past, etc. THIS WAS NOT THAT! This movie, as my poor, unsuspecting "nightmare"/sleepwalking viewing partner summed it up, is "Pointless." Horrible. Bleak. Slow. Depressing. Boring. Dark. Negative. Ugly. Stupid & Pointless. It was a Dreadful waste of time. It goes from dark & ugly, to darker & uglier, to horrific & ugliest. There are moments with glimpses of humor and warmth--but those are very fleeting and almost nonexistent. The cast is very strong, and it is mind boggling that any of them said yes to this god-awful script. How did this movie even get made? How much money did they waste on this bad, bad film?
On the way out of the theater, we overheard "This made me feel real bad." This movie will make anyone feel bad. It is horrible. So, I recommend it for anyone who enjoys feeling really really bad.
Seriously, a mind boggling disaster of epic proportions.
Tomorrow Is Today (2006)
Tomorrow is Today is Film Making at it's Finest.
First, I must apologize if my comment comes off as too over the top. But how I feel about this movie is something I can not tone down! Tomorrow is Today is Film making at it's finest. I happened upon this film, through my membership to the Spiritual Cinema Circle, and I was blown away. It pulled me in and rocked me to the core. The beautiful, poetic, inspiring way this devastatingly heart wrenching story is told is amazing. The writing, direction, acting, cinematography--everything, is so powerfully moving there really are no words to describe it. I love a good cry, and that's just what this film evokes: a GOOD cry. For inter-weaved with the heartache & pain is hope, courage, and soul stirring inspiration. This movie has the biggest heart of any I've ever seen. I TRULY hope to one day see it on the big screen, because that is exactly where it belongs. Tomorrow is Today is a first-rate film that everyone should have the opportunity to experience.
