District 9 (2009)
Stop beating me over the head, I get it!
Want to know about the movie? Racism = bad. There, to quote Family Guy, "I just saved you two long, boobless hours."
Unfortunately, to get this comment in there needs to be 10 lines of text, so here is a bit more...
Politically, I'm about as liberal as them come and live in NYC, so maybe this stuff is old news to me, but the entire thrust of the movie seemed incredibly pedantic and unbelievable (and I'm someone that was willing to accept the premise of Event Horizon!). Maybe they were trying to make sure that if aliens do land here, we send them to internment camps. Come on, they are giant insects! If we did anything, we would make them work our farms. Based on the physiology of ants, do you know how great they would be at migrant farm work?!?
And not to be ethno-centric, but I'm pretty sure that if a spaceship did land in South Africa, the US would be running the country faster than you can say "National Interest".
Land of the Blind (2006)
The sound guy should be shot
I spent the entire movie raising and lowering the volume while I watched this movie. I may have actually enjoyed it...if I could have taken my finger off the volume button for more than 3 minutes.
Other than that, the plot was a bit trite, but the imagery was very good. The character development tried very hard to be engaging, but in the end you really didn't feel terribly good or bad for the lead character.
Technically, the visual effects were very adept at setting the mood. Unfortunately, again, the sound...ruined the movie for me.
A little sound consistency would have been welcome.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Without Parallel
This film is simply without equal in the fantasy film genre, and stacks up as one of the best films I have ever seen. It is a classical Jungian archetypical good vs. evil struggles (for other films that hit on that motif, see also The Natural and the Star Wars films).
I read the books years and years ago, and this film had the same ability to suspend my normal cynicism and transport me to a mythical land.
Bravo, Peter Jackson and the rest of the cast. This will be a classic for years to come.
