The Evil Down the Street (2019)
A horror film based on real events.
The plot of this film is based on supposedly real facts, which makes it even more creepy! It starts out like a making of type film, very realistic feeling, then creeps into the horror. It's about a family that moves to a new house but have no idea that the house is possessed by a demon. and after a short time, they start to discover it and call a priest to help them because he has had certain experiences in similar cases. It's a very refreshing take on the horror film genre that really worked for me because of it did a great job of making me forget i'm watching a horror movie so I let down my guard!
Moontrap: Target Earth (2017)
A unique, fast paced indie sci-fi film with genuine vision
Moontrap: Target Earth takes place in the same universe as the original, but unfolds from the perspective of a young woman who becomes an important part of an ancient mission - I don't want to give too much away. It's a fast-paced indie film with witty dialog and a good balance of humor and action, that avoids predictability. What really sets this apart from other more predictable sci-fi stories is its vision of the human race's small but significant place in the universe.
Top Coat Cash (2017)
Grabbed me from the start.
I couldn't stop watching this movie. I'm a sucker for heist movies, bank robbery scenes so I thought I'd give this film a try, half expecting to turn it off after a while. But it pulls you in fast and hooks you on the main character right away. For an indie film with no big budget or slick Hollywood effects, it pulls off the action and fight scenes convincingly. This makes it even more fun to watch because the movie relies on inventive filmmaking, believable actors and engaging storytelling.
Chain Camera (2001)
Great and Innovative in its simple idea - But is there a missing sequence?
I think this documentary is great. Removing the presence of the filmmaker is what sets this movie apart and allows such honesty to spill out of these kids. Well edited, well paced and entertaining; each story has an arc; while still capturing the essence of the kids. And the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. I saw this at Sundance in 2001 and then again on DVD in 2006 and I remember most of it like it was. But I think a sequence was missing involving an Armenian girl who was fighting with her mom. I remember her escaping outside from a fight her mom and crying to the camera. Its a very vivid memory, but perhaps I saw this in another movie?
21 Grams (2003)
Spoof of this movie at Cinequest Online
There's a short film called "21 Carbs" and it's especially funny if you've recently watched "21 Grams". It's a comedy about fad diets shot in the same hand-held style with the out of order narrative, and all the characters reacting to "an accident" just like the "21 Grams" characters. It's online at: http://www.cinequestonline.org/2006/theater/detail_view.php?m=859 (If you like it, you can vote for it.) "Grams" certainly pushes the misery effect and doesn't let up, especially during the last half. So intense and everybody loses. Watch the spoof and you'll get a great laugh (it's a good statement on diets and body image too) and the comedy is only fueled by the misery of "grams".
Low Self-Esteem Girl (2000)
Best Punk-Made Movie
Very creatively shot and lit, in a punk kind of way. The story is poignant and paints a very accurate and important landscape of this girl's world. Each character was acted with such minimalism yet accuracy, straddling the fence between satire and reality. Each one reminded me specifically of someone I know or have known. (Carl is the best!) It creates an amazing kind of discomfort with Lois, with her dates, and with the two groups that woo her. It puts characters in situations where things clash that are usually kept separate (these are the new taboos). It's fresh, believable, and honest. Ideas, creativity, and instinct make this amazingly low budget movie work. I saw it at a film festival and immediately emailed the director for a copy. I don't think it has distribution. It was directed by the keyboardist from the band "The New Pornographers". The band is also great and fairly popular among indie rock people and critics. (I discovered this after seeing and loving the movie, so I'm not biased by the music.)
The Million Dollar Hotel (2000)
Sweet, beauty, it's about delusion, us, our world.
Others have said they don't like The Million Dollar Hotel because it's slow, too deep, too real, too on the edge, a mixture of pieces of genres, personalities, angels. Rarely has a movie grown on me like this after watching it two evenings in a row. In the pit of the stomach. If you don't understand or don't want to, you could talk about yourself and not bring down this film. When they whisper, that's when you know what it's about.
