Get Smart (1995)
Enjoyable, But The Original Is Still Better
I first became a fan of "Get Smart" in 1991 via Nick at Nite's airings, and by the end of 1993 I had every episode on tape (of course this was in the days before full-season DVD releases of every TV show ever made), so when in December 1994 I heard "Get Smart" was back in production, I was a very happy fangirl, being that my interest in the show was still at a peak!
When the first episode aired on Fox in January 1995, I was on a vacation, but I still made sure I was in the hotel to watch it (and I had it taping on timer back home), I was practically squeeee'ing with delight!
After watching all 7 of the new episodes over January and February, I went away from the experience happy, but with the mindset that the original was still better. As for the one commenter who said Zach (whose agent number was never revealed) had no straight-person to play off of, I think 66 was perfect for that role. She was as serious as Zach was silly, and I think the interplay between them really worked for some good comedy, and their uneasy tolerance for each other would have kept the two from becoming lovers had the series been picked up for 1995-96 season, avoiding falling into the "Moonlighting" trap.
The new arrangement of the show's theme really worked too, it was very modern-spy-movie chic, but still recognizable as the "Get Smart" theme :)
Overall: I would say a 7 out of 10. They should have tried to get the show's creators back, but it was still a very entertaining and valiant effort on Fox's part.
Winx Club (2004)
Stereotypical, but ADDICTIVE!!
---May be minorly spoilerish-- First of all, I'm a 33-year-old woman with no kids.
Second of all, I've become addicted to this show.
It's funny though, by all normal accounts, this would be the kind of show I usually shy away from. The characters are all stereotypes, it tends to paint a negative view of Wicca (then again, since it comes from a highly-Catholic country {Italy}, that would be expected), the art makes you want to shout "EAT SOMETHING!!!" to all the characters, even the guys of Red Fountain, and the Season 1 finale looks like it's starting to rip off the X-Men as Bloom goes all Phoenix-y on the 3 truly-evil witches (I won't spoil *how* she does it though).
Yet, I find myself strangely drawn to this show's mega-cuteness, watching both Fox's Saturday morning showings and Toon Net's weekday showings.
It's just simply a fun show, despite it's glaring flaws. It's the perfect show to just watch and forget about the state of the world. Just turn off your mind for a bit and go back to a simpler time where you'd just plop down in front of the TV Saturday mornings and take in the fun.
Remember what it was like to be a kid again.... :) After all, think of the stuff we used to watch on Saturdays as kids. If I really wanted realism in my cartoons, I'd dig into my anime stash. :) My rating: 7 out of 10
The Ring (2002)
Unique!
**************SPOILER ALERT********************
I just saw this movie 2 days ago on cable and I had no bad issues with this film at all.
This film is one of the few that made me feel such deep empathy for a major horror villian. The circumstances surrounding Samara/Sadako's childhood and death definitely made me understand why her spirit would want to exact posthumous vengeance. I would too in her shoes. My empathy was so great that, on the LiveJournal of someone roleplaying as the character, I commented that if she ever came for me, I'd go so far as to help her out of the monitor (I viewed the video on QuickTime) and just give her a hug so she knows that someone out there actually cares, and if she still feels she needs to kill me afterwards, then at least she knows she has friends out there. I dunno, maybe I'm just weird that way.
I just ordered "The Ring", "Ring"s 0&1, "Rasen" (the more literally canonical sequel), and "The Ring Virus" (the Korean version) on DVD...mark me as a new 'Ringworm', I'm hooked!
The Stuff (1985)
Good campy fun!
Yeah, the movie is bad, but it's one of those that can also be a lot of fun! I just saw it twice over this past weekend and I'm STILL singing the catchy fictional ad jingle for "The Stuff"!
"Enough...is never enough!"
