Not ranting or scorching at it. I'm being honest. There are several reasons why this movie is super bad, but I'll mention just the following ones:
1. THIS NOT A CYBERPUNK MOVIE, even though it's passed on as I'd it was. Period.
It's plot revolves around drug addiction, not futurism. In fact, the plot takes place in contemporary California.
Not to say there are no 'cyberpunk' elements, we find two in this movie: mass surveillance and the 'Scramble suit', a technological device that appears in the movie, but all of the rest is pretty ordinary and for sure the movie doesn't revolve around any of these two elements.
2. The move has a length of 100 minutes, 80 of which you have most of the characters going through hallucinations as an effect of severe brain damage caused by a popular drug (the one the movie is about) without ever knowing if what's happening is meaningful or not. The protagonist himself is very confused and so is everything, up until the last 20 minutes of the movie, when you get to see the 'explanation' for everything, all in a very rushed way.
3. Throughout the entire movie, the mood is creepy and depressive. Theres never a joke, there's never a love moment, never an action scene, nothing, it's just the problems and the slowly dripping depression of the characters, all in, all out. And of course, very monotonous, I only watched it through the end without getting bored because the movie is very suspenseful and at every second i thought there would be a plot twist, but there wasn't.
4. Some clear goofs here and there. One of them is that the drug the movie is all about is supposed to get someone addicted at once, so you either addicted or you never used it.
However, one important character is seen popping some of this drug's pills and are in quite messy state early in the movie, but then in the end turns out they've never been addicted after all. Some serious good here, with some other deal breaking issues one might not pick up but that are definitely there.
If you like real cyberpunk movies, like Ghost in The Shell, Matrix, Blade runner, it wouldn't do bad to skip this one. It's a real bad movie.
