Napoleon (2023)

Hollywood overtaking over quality
9 December 2023
Once I found out that there will be a movie about Napoleon starring Joaquin Phoenix, I got excited. What a great idea? It's one of the most interesting people in history, of course this would make a great movie.

But once I saw the first trailer, I understood that things aren't going to be so easy. This was a Hollywood 2023 history adaptation after all. In a world where movies don't have to make sense anymore but just succeed at the box office chances for a good historical movie about such a character are low. And so we're my expectations.

The scenes are overdramatized, the battles too, everything seems fake at first sight. And Napoleon shooting at the pyramids? Common....

Poison (II) (2023)

Gripping experience
2 October 2023
Watching the newly filmed short movie Poison, I was fascinated how brilliant acting and directing can come together (with brilliant storytelling as well) and create such an epic movie.

The story evolves around a man named Mr. Pope who lies in his bed while a deadly snake falls asleep under his sheet. His friend Woods is there to help him get out of this terrible situation.

The camera is just wonderful, constantly switching views and finding creative ways to tell the story. The acting is terrific, just perfect to the last detail to serve the story. The setting and design are exactly how a world out of a book might look.

Taxi Driver (1976)

Outlived classic

I agree with some of the opinions that people have about this movie. That it's a masterpiece, a cultural icon and THEY'RE RIGHT. I just don't think that this movie is still as relevant as it was in the 1970's. Unlike The Godfather or Jaws, this movie has been triumphed by other films describing an individual slowly loosing his mind (Joker etc.) and even though I consider to be a GOOD movie, I don't hold it on the same level as The Godfather, because this movie is just a masterpiece lost in time, not understood by today's viewership, myself.

It moves in slow pace, and the whole movie kind of builds to well, nothing. And that's probably my biggest problem with it. Anyway. So long.

An uplifting experience
11 February 2023
The new movie A Man Called Otto staring Tom Hanks is about as good as a comedy can get. It reminds me of some of his earlier works, but this time he adds another element to the game. His grumpy character. We've never seen Tom Hanks play a character with negative traits such as this one. And he handles it perfectly!

It's been a long time since I've seen such great acting performance. It's perfect down to the last detail. We feel and empathize with Otto-yet we feel completely detached from his opinions. We root for him to become sociable-yet we enjoy his grumpiness. What a great movie! And it actually makes you laugh. 8/10.

Sensational!

I'm leaving the cinema satisfied after a long time. Finally, somebody has made a movie that matches the quality and storyline of the great classics. Finally, somebody understands how to write a good script and how to roll the camera to keep the audience interested during the movie. Although 3 hours maybe painful for some, I didn't even notice the abnormal length. You really get invested in the characters, so much that you can forget to eat your popcorn.

About the movie: It feels like the camera was kidnapped by Quentin Tarantino and Martin Scorsese because the stylistic dialogues and magical sets are something we haven't seen here since these geniuses left the director's chair. But Bravo, to the young director who created this masterpiece. I feel obliged to show my gratitude, for restoring my hope in the modern cinema, at least in your movies.

Perfect mess-up
26 November 2022
The story sets of perfectly. The singing of Buster Scruggs combined with original dialogues is just wonderful.

That's why I'm disappointed to see that the beginning is actually the best part of the movie. The rest of the movie moves in slow pace, with boring stories, that are stretched out onto more than 30 minutes.

I understand that westerns tend to be slower, and quite but they should be wrapped around something interesting. Most of the 6 stories are just blank and boring. I'm sorry, but again: this is the reason why westerns aren't coming back. Screenwriters (Coen Brothers)-who actually made some great movies (The Big Lebowski etc.) should think more through the script before taking on the western genre.

A truly beautiful movie
22 September 2022
I saw this movie tonight and it made me feel like I was touched by the God of movies himself. It was one of those moments when you just hit the perfect movie, with the perfect cast and a perfect story.

This is, truly a beautiful, uplifting piece of cinematography. The props, the costumes, everything was equisite to the last detail. But most of all the story itself. What a beautiful idea? Truman Burbank, an office worker is the centre of The Truman Show, which is a TV reality show where he (unconsciously) stars in the main role. Doesn't that sound intriguing? To me it did, and it is.

I applaud to all of the people involved in the creation of this movie and to the writer, Andre Niccol, I say ''Bravo''.

Thank you for reading this recommendation and if I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening and good night!

A true masterpiece
17 September 2022
This masterpiece with Anthony Hopkins and Colman in the main roles truly meets the expectations one might have It gives us an insight into the mind of an 80 year old man who suffers with Alzheimer's disease.

We spend most of our time wandering through the hallways of his flat, while cracking all of the mysteries about his life.

The idea of a unreliable narrator, which is used in this movie can be compared to Inception or Memento. (Both movies use the effect of twisted reality) Anthony Hopkins shows his best in this 2020 picture. But it wouldn't be Anthony Hopkins if there weren't some chilling moments, and there were a few.

I recommend this movie to anyone.

Typical and predictable

This movie represents what I found in today's cinema. Taking old character, good stories, clichés and bringing them back again and again and again with just more expensive cast, better effects and a BETTER STORY? Oh nooo, they forgot about that part.

If can't decide whether you wanna see this movie, just make sure you know what you want from it. If you want a 3 hour action movie that is all filmed in dark colours, go. But if you expect to see some old familiar characters and pretend that its still 2008 (The Dark Knight release) then you'll be better of just staying home.

Adam Bárta.
