Enola Holmes (2020)
Actually really heartfelt
I went into the movie with very low expectations. It was going to be a "feminist" movie written en directed by men. But I was pleasantly surprised. Yeah the feminist themes were a on the nose at times, but not shallow as I expected.
As for historical accuracy. The character Enola's representation is the most inaccurate: lose hair, low necklines during day time, no hat etc. But the character in the background of shots were immaculately dressed. As if the costume designers put more work into them than the main characters.
Furthermore, a lot of people have criticized it for being too "pc" for its inclusiveness. However I always believe that a movie can make it historical by accurate clothing, mannerisms, settings, etc. rather than an all white cast. Racism isn't the only thing that would make something historically accurate.
(500) Days of Summer (2009)
Manic pixie dream girl subverted
If you know a little bit about movies, your probably know the "Manic pixie dream girl" trope where a seemingly perfect, cute, quirky and adventurous girl spices up the life of our boring main character and then disappears.
500 days of summer is what it would really be like to date such a girl. Summer is actually a realistic well portrait character and shows how a "Manic pixie dream girl" would actually act in real life. She is unreliable and spontaneous in ways to negatively effect our main character.
But the best thing about this movie, I think, is how it is a good portrayal of actual relationships. There is no 1 person at fault for the break up. You cant blame Summer for not wanting the commitment, after all she blatantly made that clear. Tom is the one projecting his need for romance onto her.
I love how during the times I watched this my natural instinct was to side with Tom, but the older I got I realised that Summer was not the villain. She was just her own person and not there to make Tom's boring life good for him
Sseul-sseul-ha-go cha-ran-ha-sin-do-ggae-bi (2016)
Dont be afraid to try out a k-drama
It is the best serie I have ever watched. Not just k-drama, serie. Is it the amazing acting? Probably. The hilarious script? I don't doubt it. The compelling characters? Most certainly.
It is a perfect match of Asian lore with a modern spin, fantasy, historic drama, and romance. It honestly appeals to everyone.
But from all the things the performance is my favourite. The facial expressions are absolutely on point. I don't know a word Korean but the acting is so expressive and good that I could understand half of what their doing just by there face. The most hilarious moments where all conveyed through interactions between characters. The chemistry is absolutely amazing. If I was in charge of the academy awards I would have given every actor an oscar. Every actor in the serie has been proven to be excellent but this show just makes them that much better. I dont know if they were just perfect for the role or if it was the directing but of every single actor I think this serie is there best work.
The lore is something distinctively Asian, which makes the interesting plot possible. (Eastern) Asian lore is something that hasn't been explored a lot in western countries so if your from the west, there's a big change to haven't heard from many of the stories of history. But this serie gives you a taste of all of it. And amazing it is indeed!

O mai Bineoseu (2015)
Two step forward 1 step back
It's really a half half situation. On the one side there finally is k-drama that has a plus sized lead, on the other side south-Korea's standards are still to high for an actual plus sized person to play the main lead. "Let's just get a super model in a fat suit."
It's time they invest in representation.
The moral of the story is also half assed. Yeah, it doesn't exactly say "you're fat lose weight" but it isn't addressing the incredibly unhealthy beauty standards that women in South Korea still face every day, at least not adequately. So that's why it get's a 5/10.
Ja zuster, nee zuster (2002)
Don 't forget it's meant for kids!
This movie is a amazing adaptation of a old show written by Annie MG Smidt, who is known for her children books.
Internationally this film is marketed towards older audiences but in the Netherlands it was heavily geared towards kids to watch with their parents.
I see a lot of international reviews claiming it's too silly, but clearly the original audience is lost on them.
That doesn't mean that the film can't be enjoyed by older audiences, as is seen in these reviews. But just dont be surprised when the film is childlike or even silly at points. I loved it as a kid and still do now!
Big Mouth (2017)
God awful
The animation makes me wanna gauche my eyes out. They really couldn't have thought of anything more appealing? The humor also is really stupid and childish. Should it appeal to young teenagers? If it is, why is it so crude.
Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
Beautiful
The art direction is beautiful and unique, and I completely adore the fact that they chose stop-motion to do this film even though that is the obvious harder choice. It gives it it's own flare that I have never encountered in another movie. It is not shy to use dramatic angles, probably because they know how beautiful the stop-motion dolls are. I a lot of over the top negative critics only because they had a big connection with the original source. However I feel like these people simply dont want to look further than their nose to critic this movie.
Boyz in the Wood (2019)
Funny and heartfelt
Saw this during the International film festival in Rotterdam. It has all the qualities I love. Compelling characters, campy writing, funny jokes and just a sprinkle of social commentary that made it just a bit funnier without being overbearing. Would watch it again if I could. Definitely recommended!
