Path of Dreams / Yume no kayoiji
13 May 2024
Mari moves from Tokyo to a small town and starts going to the local high school. With her antisocial behaviour, she quickly ends up insulting the popular girl Satsuki. She also tries to get rid of a boy called Takao, who wants to befriend her. Instead, she begins to hang out with a girl called Rie, who likes to play the piano.

The town has a legend about ghost children, and what unfolds is mainly a ghost story, but it is not a horror movie, because the ghost appearances are not set up to be scary.

As the title suggests, there are some dreamlike sequences. The movie is mostly calm and contemplative. It probably had a tiny budget, but it smartly manages to express a certain event by showing a photo collage instead of special effects.

Rie was a bit unexpressive, but it worked out well considering her personality. The others were good, especially Satsuki, who made lively face expressions in most scenes.

Though not dramatic, the movie is nice rather than boring.

It might not be easy to find it with English subtitles, so I translated it myself and wrote my own. That's how much I love this movie, even though I failed to express it in the review.

Midnight Ruins
20 August 2023
The failed painter Cheng Zihao is asked by his former university friend Su Fei to help investigate the case of a ghost that is haunting the theatre rehearsals of a drama club.

The movie starts strongly by displaying many paintings, setting a dark mood, and establishing the main character as a proliferous but poor artist.

Another thing catching the attention is the background music, which signals that it is a horror movie. Maybe it is overused by being played even in scenes without an immediate threat.

The ghost is also overused, shown too early and too many times.

Otherwise, it is a solid Chinese horror movie. If you have no experience of the genre and expect something similar to a Japanese horror movie, there is a risk of disappointment, though.

The plot is logical and has charm. It is nice to see two graduates as the main characters, hanging out with the group of students, instead of having only young people.

Something that is in short supply is romance, which the writer easily could have added a little bit more of.

Kidnapped Soul
30 July 2023
In this thriller from Taiwan, a police detective desperately searches for a kidnapped child, and eventually enlists the help of a psychic medium.

The title is fitting, combining the kidnapping case with the supernatural elements. It is probably not the first movie with this combination, but it does it tastefully. It is not meant as a horror, since those things are not portrayed as scary.

There is some action, but the main focus is on police investigation. This part is logical and well done as a mystery. A nice touch is that it is not only the prime detective doing all footwork and thinking. A couple of other characters also make small observations and realizations, making it into a nice team effort.

The acting holds a good quality, with no weak link. The most iconic and memorable character is probably the psychic.

It is a solid movie with no weakness, except that it is plain and not weird or original enough to make a strong impression.

Rin
30 July 2023
Rin is a mystery movie about a village where children are disappearing, and a group of high-school boys who try to find the missing children. The exact genre is kept vague at the beginning of the movie, so I will also keep it vague.

There are two main aspects that I want to write about, the characters and the mystery. A large part of the running time is used to depict the relationships between the group of boys who are the main characters. Each one is different, with their own backstory and problems. The way this played out felt similar to certain novels by Stephen King, It for example. (Don't expect other similarities too much.)

Somehow it feels like it is based on a novel, rather then being written directly as a movie. Doing some research, I read somewhere that it is based on a play by Matayoshi Naoki, but I did not find conclusive evidence.

The attention to the characters made their interactions the most enjoyable aspect. The main character Kouta is likeable, but is sometimes over-played. It is instead the edgy transfer student Tendo who brings most of the tension.

The mystery has a good build-up and is intriguing. The problem is that it is resolved too abruptly. It is a relatively short movie of only 83 minutes after all. I would have liked to see the detectives work more, collecting clues and making conclusions.

The village is cosy, but could have benefitted from even more culture. Or the female classmate that sometimes hangs out with the boys could have been involved more. It is a nice story, that leaves me wishing for more.

Ranmaru: The Man with the God Tongue
16 July 2023
Ranmaru is a detective with a well developed sense of taste, whose speciality is analyzing clues by licking them. This time, he takes on a case in a cozy village, that has hot springs and bottled water as its economical base.

The movie follows upon a TV series of 10 episodes with the same title. It begins with a long synopsis of the TV series, and introduction of the detective and his two side-kicks. So there is a solid transition with no questions unanswered.

The female side-kick Hikaru is an annoying wanna-be detective, who only contributes by spouting nonsense. This is even commented upon by the male side-kick Kanji, who also is the narrator, and the most funny character in this comedy.

The case is shallow and practically unsolvable, not because it is complicated, but because the motivation behind it is unnatural. It is hard to deduct who is behind it, just because the actions taken are not logical.

This was surprising, because the director Tsutsumi Yukihiko usually creates good mysteries, and good characters too. Actually, the weakness might be that the characters are not taken seriously as rational beings.

The dark history of the village itself is more interesting. Because of this, it is not a complete failure as a mystery. It is also lively with some funny moments, so it is not a complete failure as a comedy either.

Ataru: The First Love & the Last Kill
14 July 2023
Ataru is a very peculiar detective who helps the police now and then. This case is not so much a puzzle, but more of a cat and mouse thriller. Though the tone is often light, with comedy mixed in by some side characters.

The case follows after the TV series Ataru (2012) of 12 episodes. Unfortunately, the movie has a rough start where many characters and relationships are not introduced properly, supposing that you know them from before. There is nothing wrong with watching the movie first anyway, just that you will get a weird and confusing first 6 minutes. When I first saw it in a movie theater in Japan, I immediately thought about walking out, but fortunately stayed, because I had nothing better to do.

The story eventually stabilizes to stand on its own. Still, there are flashbacks to the series. All this is a small minus, but not fatal.

Ataru is an original detective that carries the movie, and even gets involved in some touching scenes. On the other side stands a capable and stylish antagonist with a backstory and complex motivations, who is able to cause a lot of trouble.

The larger than usual cast makes it lively, but the comedy is sometimes irritating. It's an entertaining movie with lots of contents and some cool moments.

Han-shojo (1938)

Drive My Car
9 July 2023
Han-shojo is a short love story with a lot of sweetness.

I don't even know if it has an official English title. A direct translation could be Half-virgin. But in this context, that would not mean what you think it means. Maybe a better interpretation would be "young adult". But actually, I think the best possible title would be Drive My Car.

The protagonist Misuzu is a woman who has got a driver's license, and works as a chauffeur. When she first appears, she seems happy and motivated about her work.

What will give her more trouble is the dilemma of choosing between two handsome men, a poor writer and a rich company executive, who are both interested in her. However, there are obstacles making it difficult to start a relationship with either of them.

A few other interesting or dramatic things happen, but the movie is so short that I don't want to say more, because then there would nothing left to explore. It could easily have been made longer, because there is at least one subplot that could have been dragged out more. On the other hand, it could be boring if all movies were the same length.

Even though I have seen many Japanese romance movies, it is hard to come up with one that feels more authentic. Han-shojo really is fresh, modern, and realistic.

Of course it also has clichés, like the love triangle with one poor and one rich man. The thing is that the characters are not cliché, but behaves like real humans.

I really recommend it if you feel like watching a cute romance that no one of your friends has even heard about. It might be hard to find it with English subtitles, though.

The Hungry Lion
4 July 2023
The happy life of a school girl is complicated by the spread of a video. Friends and family have to decide what to believe. Others look to exploit the situation.

While most high-school movies are romantic comedies or sometimes horror, there is also a small genre that tries to handle particular social problems or trends. Social realism, if you will. This movie will be of interest if you prefer directors like Koreeda Hirokazu.

A noticeable choice is that the camera often has a fixed placement, sometimes behind the characters, so that their faces are not seen. This makes the experience similar to reality shows like Terrace House, which is even mentioned. Especially the beginning of the first season of Terrace House, before the commentators were added, and you had to make up your opinions yourself.

There is an effort to not say out loud how the events should be interpreted and judged, as a deliberate "show don't tell". Instead it is overbearing in the selection of what it shows, and focusing some things too strongly, forcing a particular point of view and emotional reaction.

At times, it is a suspenseful and anxiety-inducing drama. At other times it flips through disparate scenes, so that the immersion is lost. In those parts, it can be more difficult to connect with the characters. Then it feels slow even though it is short.

The lack of music in most scenes is another, probably deliberate choice, with the purpose of not leading the viewer into predetermined emotions. This is understandable since music can irritate by going contrary to what one wants to feel. Still, since music is a major catalyst for emotions, a movie without it can feel dry. Or maybe the silence itself can conjure emotions.

It is a very original movie, so be sure to check it out if you are into realism.

Past and Present
2 July 2023
Many horror movies nowadays are about film crews or vloggers. This one is also about filming, on a small scale.

This time, a club of university students investigate rumours and urban legends about ghosts, and make horror videos about it. While they enthusiastically engage in acting and filming, weird things happen around the members themselves. Still they decide to do one more big project. What could possibly go wrong?

Compared to other Chinese horror films from the same era, there are a couple of things that give this one a slightly different feel.

Firstly, that the cast is larger than usual, making it more lively. It even gets difficult to keep up with who everyone is, and who they are in love with (which is not really a negative).

Secondly, that it takes place at more locations than usual, at a high tempo, with many things happening.

It is not a comedy, even though there is a witty quote or two. It is definitely a horror movie, considering how it has been optimized to pack in as many scares as possibly. Even so, most of them don't get very scary, because a lack of threat most of the time.

There is a mystery, but not much time is spent exploring it. The plot does not seem to be the most important thing. Instead, it is more about the chaos that breaks out.

The strong point is the feeling of taking part in exciting adventures with a group of friends.

What if Terrace House was haunted?
28 June 2023
In this horror movie, four people are paid to take care of a country-side house for a week. There are rules, and they are recommended to film their daily life.

The set-up is similar to reality shows like Terrace House, but the vlogging is not made a big thing. Instead, focus is on the interactions of the inhabitants, and the isolation at the remotely located house.

In this kind of artificial thought-experiment, where a group of people is put together, the dynamic between the characters is especially important. There is some conflict, and some cute scenes, so this aspect becomes the strongest point of the movie.

The house is beautiful and has several good spots for filming, even a swimming pool. Yet, it by itself does not have personality enough to carry the movie. A couple more houses or locations could have been good for variation.

Every horror movie needs a mysterious background story. This time it is somewhat logical, but a bit mundane, and does not engage my imagination.

The special effects are of the cheaper kind, and some props seem to be made of plastic instead of the material they should be made of. But that's ok, since the cheap physical props look more natural than bad computer generated effects would have.

My final words is that the movie has a few nice scenes, but that there is not much that is unique or interesting.

Detective Catherine (2015 TV Movie)

Detective Catherine
27 June 2023
The weather is fine in Kyoto. The tourists are at the temples, and various schools of flower arrangement meet for a power struggle. A perfect opportunity to commit crimes and drop clues, right? Unfortunately for the criminals, a classy lady from the USA takes up the case, earning her the title Detective Catherine.

As a puzzle mystery, it is relatively simple. If you want a challenge, you might be able to guess who did what, but it can be more difficult to guess how.

The theme of flower arrangement adds aesthetics, but the setting of a cultural society is too similar to an average episode of the TV shows like Midsomer Murders. Most of the suspects are also bland and cliché.

The detective has a clear personality, and a strong presence, making her a center of attention. She also has things going on outside of the investigation, and talents aside from catching criminals. The "Dr. Watson" on the other hand is mostly useless.

A strength of the movie is that it is lively with many characters, and subplots outside the case. The use of an American detective in a tourist trap setting might be attempt to appeal to an international audience.

Watch it if you like classical puzzle mysteries and want to see one set around the shrines in Kyoto.

Haunted Sisters
25 June 2023
This is a beautiful movie. In particular the interior of houses are cozy with nice furniture. It does not look expensive but quaint and old. Outdoor and nature locations look picturesque, but with no landscape panoramas.

Many special effects seem to be physical, and there are not many computer-made monsters in this horror movie. This makes things look more natural, and it makes the movie seem older than it is.

Music is also added in a tasteful way. I recognized the song Spring Breeze (piano version) from the visual novel Clannad. Maybe the movie bought the rights to use it.

If you want to watch it, prepare to be confused for at least the first 20 minutes. First because there are no sisters anywhere. The problem is not a mistranslation of the title, becuase it literally contains the word "sisters" in Chinese. In China, like in English-speaking countries, it is possible to call a friend a sister or brother, so maybe that is what is meant.

A second source of confusion is that the action in the very first scene is carried out so incompetently that it is hard to understand what actually happens.

After around 20 minutes, the main story stabilizes a bit, but it can still be chaotic or illogical at times. There can be unexpected jumps between locations, or people can show up where they have no reason to be. Not because the plot is intelligent, but because of bad editing and a failure to communicate the action precisely. At least there is no way you can guess the ending.

Maybe the chaos is just a symptom of too many ideas, and that there are many things going on for its length of only around 80 minutes. That is not necessarily a bad thing if it increases the entertainment. Additionaly, the many cute or funny scenes makes it anything but boring.

"The journey, not the destination matters"
24 June 2023
On their way to a wedding, what will the travelers find on the road? In the evening, seven young adults arrive at a deserted rest stop with restaurants and shops. Soon spooky incidents begin to happen.

The first time I watched it, most of the characters seemed dislikable, and they were set up that way, to each fulfill their destiny in the plot line. The second time I was more tolerant, but they still seem like devices, not acting according to natural instincts.

The most value is contributed by the introverted Xue Lian with her inner monologue, that works as philosophical commentary to the events. There is also witty dialogue at times.

A considerable amount of time is used for going through the motions of what you have already guessed will happen. Apart from that, the overall plot is in my taste as a horror story.

Mostly set in darkness and diligently made as spooky as possible, it is one of the scarier Chinese horror movies. Watch it if you dare.

Frightening Embroidery Shoes
23 June 2023
What's so scary about embroidered shoes? You would know if you were a member of the An family in the countryside of China.

The setting is nice, with furniture, paintings, and outdoor locations. It is not outstanding, but the lack of extravagance makes it realistic and cozy. The small, modern exterior and large, old-fashioned interior are probably not from the same house, which can cause a faint disorientation.

The Americanized brother An Lin made the best impression, as a reasonable and sympathetic guy who is good at dodging conflicts. The sister An Wen is a good main character with flaws and a changing attitude.

The ghosts have a good design and background story, but are seen too often, even in daylight, breaking the "Don't show the monster" rule. What creates the most anxiety is instead the isolated and precarious situation of An Wen.

Plotwise, you have probably seen most of it before. It is a simple but reasonable.

Don't underestimate this movie because of the funny title. It has nice scenes and can be enjoyable if not expecting too much.

The Woman in the Dunes
22 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A university researcher visits a sandy beach to catch rare beetles. He has nowhere to stay, so some villagers show him to a hut where a poor woman lives. The hut is weirdly located on the bottom of a deep pit. She makes dinner for him, and hangs an umbrella over him so that sand will not fall into the food. But when he wakes up in the morning, he realizes that it will not be easy to leave.

What follows is a long (2h 27 min) story of suffering, boredom, and horror, as the man fights to survive and to use his scientific knowledge to escape. There is not much to eat and drink in this monochrome desert. It really is a post-apocalyptic world in miniature, where the laws and rules of society have broken down, and the two inhabitants are fully exposed to the whims of the other.

The hut does not contain many objects either. Both the man and the watcher will soon learn to know most of them closely. One can easily say that this is a movie where the environment is a character. Various close up shots of grains of sand, or of sand crashing down with a threatening sound, accompanied by creepy horror movie music, makes it a capricious and dangerous character.

So it is then a triangle drama between the sand, the man and the woman. The latter two are not on good terms either, and don't talk a lot. It feels very uncertain what will happen; if they will escape, if they will kill each other, or if the sand will fall down and bury them alive.

While the movie is obviously a philosophical and technical masterpiece, it's a bit painful to see so much misery and suffering. I didn't fully like the man, though he has an active personality that makes him a good protagonist. I felt more sympathy towards the woman, and her unusual view on life.

Love Exposure (2008)

This is a long movie...
22 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A boy (Yuu) who becomes a hentai and commits sins in order to have something to confess to his father. A violent girl (Youko) who hates men but falls in love with Yuu when he is dressed as a woman, ending up believing she is a lesbian. And another girl (Koike) with an even more traumatic past who stalks them with depraved intentions.

Surrounded by a large cast of colourful and occasionally sympathetic side characters, these abused, angsty, and sexually frustrated teenagers are forced on an odyssey through murky realms of pornography, religion, and mental illness.

As a comedy, it is funny. As a tragedy, it joins up with A Clockwork Orange. There are outbreaks of ultra violence, but also moments of comradery.

Always over the top. Always exaggerated. In an impressionistic manner it depicts the pain of never being able to reach the object of love. Or the insanity of chasing illusions instead of seeing the human being in front of one's eyes.

On a deserted beach, littered with garbage, Youko screams a bible verse about love. She knows what she craves, but is too emotionally damaged to recognize it when she sees it.

Mitsushima Hikari, as Youko, thus made the strongest impression with her forceful acting. Yuu is also a great main character with a long story arc and many transformations. Never giving up, he fights to the teeth in every scene.

Unfortunately, the side characters, like Yuu's father and Youko's step mother, did not get satisfying resolutions to their somewhat interesting character arcs, but became puppets of the plot. Especially Koike was a disappointment since she was set up as a main character with her own backstory and internal monologue, but ended up with a lack of humanization.

Love Exposure by Sion Sono is a glorious epic. Raw an uncompromising. What is lacks in realism and budget, it compensates with force and imagination.

Talk to the Dead
22 June 2023
This is a story about people who have lost the person most important to them, and a mobile app that claims to make them able to converse again.

Given the creepy music and scares, it is intended as a horror movie. There are several Japanese movies where a ghost uses technology to randomly select victims to haunt. I thought that Talk to the Dead would follow this pattern, but it deviates slightly. Or rather has a different perspective in that it is a character driven story.

With character driven I mean a story generated from questions like "What would be natural for this character to do now?" rather than questions like "Now it's this character's time to die. What would be the most spectacular way to kill him off?", which generates a plot-driven story.

There are not many characters, but each is taken seriously. They are not exceptional, but I found them likable. Especially the secondary character Mayu, played by Sakurai Yuki, who contributed heart to the story. It would be empty and boring without her. Though she is the kind of character that some watchers might find annoying.

The character focus and lack of cannon fodder also has disadvantages, like making the movie less scary, while adding more drama instead. It is also shorter than usual, at around one and a half hours, having less time for murders.

Talk to the Dead is not the scariest movie, but it has a logical story without obvious plot holes. Maybe it can be something to look into if you want more after watching the horror classics.

Drive My Car (2021)

Drive my Car
21 June 2023
When I read that this movie has won awards at Cannes and the Oscars, I realized that I had three hours of torture before me. To endure the boredom, I divided it into three parts, to watch over three days.

Immediately after the movie began, I realized that it is based on the book Men Without Women by Murakami Haruki. The book is actually a collection of short stories, and the movie seamlessly integrates a few of them into a single story.

I was happy to see my favourite, the short story Scheherazade, included in the movie. Unfortunately it is narrated, which is a misuse of the film medium. I was also distraught over the changed ending of this subplot, which changes the feel and even genre of the short story, just to create a cheap shock. So I was already in a bad mood after the first part of the movie.

Contributing to my bad mood was a couple of early scenes without proper buildup, that were included for shock value.

Then the main character went on to direct a play by Anton Chekhov. What is it with Japanese movies and Chekhov? This is at least the third Japanese movie I have seen about some people setting up a play by Chekhov. And at least the fifth Asian movie that is about setting up a play. I'd rather watch the play than a movie about it. At least Chekhov likes guns.

The only interesting character is the driver, who is cool.

Why is it that all books by Murakami Haruki, who is a fun and easy to read writer, are made into boring movies. It's like they think that since he is a famous author, they have to make a pretentious, boring movie. In my opinion, all directors except Sono Shion should be banned from making movies out of his books.

Soul Mechanic (2020– )

"A person who notices someone who is sick is someone who is even sicker."
19 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Dr. Lee Si Joon is an eccentric psychiatrist who likes to construct role-play scenarios for his patients. When he encounters the fiery idol Han Woo Joo, he is reluctant to treat her, and instead hires her as an assistant. It turns out that her underlying condition is as dangerous as he feared.

At first it was unclear what the genre would be, with a mix of comedy and some foreshadowing that it might develop into a thriller. It turned out a large part of the show was made up of episodical side-stories in the style of Dr. House and other hospital shows. A new patient makes a dramatic arrival, the team of junior doctors does some detective work on the patient's family and finds the hidden cause of the problem, Miss Han does some role-playing, Dr. Lee says something wise, and the patient is cured.

The side-stories are varied and somewhat entertaining, but compared to Dr. House and other shows, the cases are too easy to solve. There are also side-stories about the doctors themselves, and even a couple of stale, marriage-of-convenience love stories that are as romantic as if you'd place two mannequins together. The side-stories did not touch me, did not increase my knowledge, and was not a reason to watch the series. They bored me a lot, and I'd like an abridged version. I also think it would have been good to reduce the team to a smaller group of more likeable characters, like in the first season of Dr. House.

Instead, the advantage lies in being a series with a definite end, and a main story. It has an interesting premise, and I would have liked more focus on the main plot, and it could have been made more dark and thrilling. I actually got the impression that it is inpired by the American horror movie The Sixth Senth.

The incidents caused by Miss Han are exciting, but cleaned up too quickly. Instead, most of the conflict is created by the other doctors. Still it is a worthwhile main story, that takes a direction that is a bit unusual. Honestly, if someone would cut out the side-stories and condence it to the main story, I would give the series a higher score.

It is not mentioned, but the series illustrates how anxiety can get increased by technology, e.g. If someone forgets their phone and another person tries to call him. It was also odd that everyone refused to tell her the diagnosis even after she had been treated for a long time. I have the impression that patients usually get to know their diagnosis.

Dr. Lee was played well, but did not outplay Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense. As a calm, reliable psychiatrist, he could have been played by any good male actor. I'm not complaining, but the character could have been made more interesting. The best thing was the fear in his eyes when he realized the true diagnosis and tried to drive away. It was also nice of him to run a podcast as a hobby.

The actress Jung So Min, who played Miss Han, on the other hand, is the only reason I watched the series to begin with. She is a star, with an iconic voice and style, and it would not have been the same with any other actress. Since she was able to play the villain protagonist Mu-deok in Alchemy of Souls, it is no surprise that she is able to play another personality disorder in Soul Mechanic. Not only does she play out the symptoms well, but she does it with great humanity and love. Miss Han is not only a patient, but a protagonist in the story, fighting hard against her disorder, to keep her job, and for the people that she loves. It is one of the most magnificent interpretations of a mental patient that I have seen.

There are a few American movies about the same personality disorder, but I have only seen one of them. I think the story of Han Woo Joo can be of particular interest and encouragement to people with the same diagnosis.

Who Are You: School 2015
19 June 2023
How would you react if your girlfriend started behaving differently, and one day you realize that she has been replaced by her twin sister? This is a possible scenario in the Korean high-school drama Who Are You? Or should we replace the lame title and call it Gagnam Mean Girls?

It is a typical body-swap story, just that no magic is needed. This kind of story is often comedic, but there are a few dark ones. This one has such relentless bullying, misery, and oppression that you'll never want to go back to school again.

There is also a tiny bit of romance, and a mystery, so avoid spoilers at all costs.

It can be good to know that there are other shows with similar names: School 2013, School 2017, and School 2021, that have a similar setting but different characters.

Seven years may not seem much, but with the rapid development of Asian TV, this show already feels old. The visuals have not aged well, and the editing is not the tightest, giving it a slower tempo than the super-polished shows of 2022. Yet it is short, and every episode moves the plot forward, without dragging things out too much.

If you have watched any asian high-school drama, you may know which tropes to expect, what forms the bullying will take etc. Who Are You still has some ideas of its own. The point of a body-switch story is to see a person taking up a new role in a new environment. Here it also has to be done without getting discovered.

Both sisters are played by the same actress, so don't expect them to be seen together often. They are so lost and pitiful alone, but their indirect interaction through flashbacks and diaries etc. Has more chemistry than the romance story. If they could only team up, they would take over the world.

I wonder if the theme song Reset is even more popular than the TV show.

Tomie
19 June 2023
A photography student called Tsukiko is going to hypnosis therapy to regain her lost memories. Meanwhile, a police detective is investigating a crime, and is interested in getting info from her. Tsukiko also has a friend called Tomie, who has such bad luck that a total of nine horror movies were named after her.

Tomie was released in the same year as Ringu. It is less known outside Japan, and not as impactful. Still, it has unique sides, with its own lore, rules, and feel. It gives an impression of being a classic because of the serious way it is made, with many scenes set up in an artistically ambitious way. Tsukiko being a photographer adds to the esteticism.

Although it has bloody scenes, it does not become very scary. The director has kind of said that he wanted to reduce the amount of violence. "I wanted this to be more like a drama for youth." The number of fake scares, like knocking on the door or images in mirrors, is also less than usual. It is only scary when there is real danger, which makes it cleaner. The few special effects are probably mostly physical. It is mostly calm, with a low tempo, and people talk slowly. Especially during the therapy sessions with the serene psychiatrist.

There is reasonably good acting from many participants. Tsukiko responds well to the horror. The psychiatrist has integrity, and the detective is peculiar, with entertaining habits.

The most impactful character is of course Tomie, at least relative to others in the movie. Compared to well-known characters from other movies, I wouldn't call her colourful. But that is not her style anyway. She is not extravagant, but self-aware.

Each movie has a different actress playing Tomie, and she is slightly different in every one. This is probably not a coincidence. I realized that one needs to watch more than one to appreciate how great she is.

Another thing that has gained a life of its own is Robby's song, a creepy theme song that I am sure that I have heard before. There are also other nice songs. The background music is good, but sometimes mismatched with the action, so that the horror effect is weakened. There is at least one scene that would profit from more fitting background music.

A very minor complaint is that one scene has a sudden jump from night to day.

As it is a Junji Ito story, don't expect logical explanations for everything, and you'll end up less irritated. I have my own theory, but it might not be the same as what the author intended.

I'm happy to have gained entrance to this series and adding it to others like Ringu and One Missed Call. I think everyone interested in Japanese horror should check it out and see if they like it.

Sadako
19 June 2023
A girl is spending her life locked into a closet by her mother. She only has two friends, a doll and a long-haired woman.

After an incident, the girl ends up in a hospital, under the care of doctor Mayu (Ikeda Elaiza). Meanwhile, Mayu's brother Kazuma (Shimizu Hiroya) works as a vlogger comedian. After a tip from his older colleague Yusuke (Tsukamoto Takashi), he starts investigating haunted places and publishing videos of them online. Of course, more incidents soon follow.

Even though the movie title does not contain a number, it is yet another sequel to the classical horror movie Ringu. As such, it will give you exactly what you expect. That said, absolutely watch Ringu first.

Compared to Ringu, it lacks the eerie atmosphere and symbolism. Instead it has a modern, well-polished feel. It has at least one memorable horror scene, and some that were too cliché.

A few pieces of background story are added to the lore. The curse also works differently, and a new, interesting theme is introduced.

Of the actors, Ikeda Elaiza was brilliant of course, expressing all levels of emotion from concern to horror. Shimizu Hiroya is ridiculous, but for a comedian it is not out of character. Also there was a female patient and some children in the hospital that were pretty funny. The girl played well for a child actor.

This movie is hardly of interest to anyone except for fans of the original movie. For those fans it might be a small but nice addition to the legend of Sadako.

"We were born in this time when lives are cheaper than grass."
16 June 2023
Princess Agents is a historical action-adventure series, or low fantasy, if you will. It is based on a novel, and begins in the Chinese capital Changan (Xian), sometime around 300-500 AD. At the time it aired, it was the most popular Chinese fantasy series ever. It has several story arcs, and countless subplots, but can roughly be summarized as the escape of the slave girl Chu Qiao.

Among the secondary characters in the first episodes, we have the playful Yan Xun, a hostage prince from a vassal state, who has his own reasons to escape. We also have Chu Qiao's owner Yuwen Yue, a cold-hearted noble who is the chief of the emperor's intelligence organization, his wily rival Yuwen Huai, and the lively princess Yuan Chun, who is an expert in flashy entrances.

There is a huge cast of side characters, many of whom have interesting stories, secrets, and agendas, and some of whom are cool enough that they could theoretically have their own spin-offs. Some play the political game, while others are warriors (both men and women), with particular weapons and fighting styles.

A special category is the older generation of characters, whose members are not seen often, but are played by classy veteran actors and actresses, and who tend to be extremely cunning. An adventurous past is hinted at.

Chu Qiao is basically an introvert with low ambition, who just wants to be left alone. She contributes to the sparse comedy with sarcasm, and is relatively intellectual for a fantasy hero, able to formulate her own world view, make long-term plans, and make speeches. Her internal monologue can be bone-chillingly icy. In the beginning, she is quite feral, but shows empathy and loyalty. It would be easy to just sneak away in the night, but after a while she realizes that she also wants to save a few other people, leading to ever more complicated situations, in a "from the ashes into the fire" way.

Chu Qiao is a strong protagonist in that she not only reacts to external events but has her own agenda, and partly drives the forward motion of the plot with her own initiatives. She is also perfectly balanced. She is smart enough to not do anything annoyingly stupid, while not being so intelligent that success is guaranteed. Her plans are clever but straight-forward, so that anyone might agree and imagine that they would do the exact same thing, if they had the courage.

Generally, the median IQ of the cast is relatively high. Most of the characters are able to make good comments, make deductions, see through deception, and take appropriate action. It's quite refreshing.

Chu Qiao is also good at fighting, but there are many opponents who are stronger or smarter, most often making her the underdog, forcing her to think hard to survive in every episode, so that the tension and oppression never recedes. Sometimes she wins, and sometimes she is defeated, and suffers cruelly.

Furthermore, she has one of the longest character arcs I can think of, spanning over years, with several distinct phases of world view, emotional state, clothing style, and hairstyle. Sometimes I wish that she could have lived a more peaceful and happy life, instead of electing the way of pain.

Fortunately, Chu Qiao is played by the genius actress Zhou Liying, a.k.a. Zanilia Zhou, who basically just is herself, but more self-restrained than usual in this drama. She shows her skill and draws the attention in every scene, even when just standing in the background looking bored. It is possible to understand exactly what she is thinking (even if complicated), just from face expressions. She even sings a few lines of the opening song (mostly sung by another singer).

Similar descriptions can be made of other characters, from various factions, who also have long character arcs and change a lot over time, but maybe it is best to skip it, to not spoil who the survivors are.

"We were born in this time when lives are cheaper than grass. And we are born with a low class, and can be hurt by anyone." It is often safe to assume that the main character of a show will survive for most of the show, but the same cannot be said of side characters. Anyone who has seen any Chinese fantasy knows that blood and tears may flow. Since many of the side characters, and even extras, are so endearing, this also raises the stakes and adds to the ever increasing fear and tension. There was for example a cool female ninja who never said anything or did anything important. Nevertheless, I was hoping that even she would survive, and was relieved every time I saw her in good health. At one point, I was so worried for everyone that I almost was too scared to continue.

Visually, the series is magnificent, with exquisite settings and fancy costumes (not very historically correct). There are countless beautiful scenes and camera angles. But there are also scenes where they must have tried to save money, or ran out of time. Especially the underwater scenes, which are obviously fake, with no water touching the actors. This seems to be common in Chinese fantasy. I don't know if it's because it is more difficult to film under water, or if it's for actor safety reasons.

The soundtrack contains several nice songs, that if analyzed gives clues about the characters and story. The instrumental background music fits well with the plot and adds emotional weight. It is mostly orchestral music, sometimes with Chinese instruments added in, like flutes.

Oh, there are so many anecdotes to talk about. For example a scene with a group of soldiers walking in a desert. I was surprised when one of them suddenly fell to the ground. Then I realized that considering how hot it can be in some parts of China, maybe it was the actor who fainted for real?

There is a great variety of fight scenes, ranging from unarmed kung fu scuffles between slave girls, to deadly sword duels, to army battles. Especially a few of the duels are high points, finding their way to my top-list of duels. They are set in interesting locations, well choreographed, short, brutal, visually appealing, and meaningful for the characters and story. Of course, many vases get broken.

Another attraction is the luxurious parties, where all the nobles gather, and their romantic relations, intrigues, and murder plots play out, usually ending up putting the servants in danger, one way or another. The dialogue is always sharp, and it is great to see how everyone becomes more defined by interacting in a group.

In such a long series, with so much content, that was produced under time pressure, naturally there are weak points and slow passages. But it is evident that the creators wanted to show something that had not been seen before. They wanted to create astonishing scenes where unimaginable things happen, cruel and heroic. With this energy, it is like a little bit of extra effort was added into every aspect, to make it just a little bit sharper; from plot, dialogue, and character design to settings, clothing, and music. They succeeded beyond my wildest expectations.

"The weather is pretty good. Let's have a cup of tea and chat together."

Xiaoyu lives an empty life alone. After an incident, she wakes up in a hospital and has a "I see dead people" moment. Some ghosts approach her and extort her to help them fulfil their wishes.

The first thing that came to mind was the similarities and borrowed ideas from The Sixth Sense. A certain unexplained little detail cannot even be understood without watching The Sixth Sense. But Forgetting Space has a completely different plot, and turned out to be a comedy rather than horror.

Another movie that came to mind that was Amélie (of Montmartre). Amélie also was a lonely girl doing missions, and the low profile humor has a similar feel.

The actress who played Xiaoyu mostly retained a deadpan face, but would sometimes change into comical expressions. The ghosts didn't talk much and seemed weird at first, but became very likable after closer acquaintance.

But the funniest actor was probably the psychiatrist, who looked fully perplexed when asking about Xiaoyu's invisible friends.

Overall the acting is not realistic but performed in a comical mode, though calmly and without outbursts.

There are not many special effects, but the production quality seems high, with good editing, timing, and fitting music.

The setting is deceptively clean, simple, and cheap, but is probably not random but carefully composed with certain colours reappearing in various scenes. Creating a uniform, specific art style. Almost any screenshot looks like a painting (not necessarily beautiful) with large coloured or white areas, and can be recognized as belonging to the same movie.

Although not much stands out, everything flows smoothly and most every scene is heartwarming, mildly funny, and infinitely rewatchable.

Decision to Leave
11 June 2023
This is a detective mystery, so I will try to avoid plot spoilers as much as reasonable. It is about a police detective and his assistant who are working on a case. Because of a lack of other suspects, they start investigating a certain woman. The gimmick is that the detective becomes attracted to the suspect. This is a great idea in theory, and has probably been done before. Since there is both a mystery aspect and a romance aspect, it will be convenient to review each by itself.

But first it is worth commenting on the camera work, which is great and impressionistic. For example in one scene, the detective is watching the suspect through a window. When the camera switches to inside the room, we see the detective in the room behind her, as a representation of his presence. I'd like to see tricks like this in more movies.

Overall, it is not beautiful though. One place in nature that would have been extremely beautiful in real life looks unnatural and plastic. Some other places look well-crafted but dreary.

Considering the mystery, there are relatively few clues, and the plot is mostly about the detective following one clue at a time. The puzzles are smaller than usual, and the act of putting them together is less exciting and impressive than usual. Add to this that some pieces are contradictory or silly. In all, it is worse than the average episode of a TV series like Midsomer Murders.

The detective does not make a strong impression either. He seems like an old and tired, not very smart policeman that was promoted above his competence level. He has some quirks, but compared to other famous detectives, he is not colourful. To see him fumble through the investigation is maybe realistic, but not entertaining. As a detective, he is below average. Actually he is at the absolute bottom of all detectives that come to mind.

While the detective is bland but not annoying, his assistant is a terrible policeman who does nothing useful but only slows the detective down. He can't even run up some stairs. Does the Korean police have no physical requirements at all when recruiting? And how did he get promoted to work with a top detective on serious cases? He might be meant as comic relief, but those scenes just look stupid and not funny. The existence of an incompetent cop might be realistic, but not exciting.

Romance is rare in detective stories, but should not be impossible. It is just that romance usually is built on attractive characters, and our detective isn't, for the same reasons that he is a lousy detective. The female lead is more interesting, above average compared to women in similar movies. The question is if we are invested in seeing them together.

What complicates that question is that the detective is already married. The movie tries to convince us that he is living a monotonous life with his wife, that he dearly needs to escape from. But when they are together she is instead super cute, supporting, and willing to accomodate him. She is such a waifu that merely thinking about betraying her seems like a crime.

Even though there are objections, the romance is more interesting than the mystery. This is if we see it as an "adult" affair that is not only based on love, but on lust and kinks. Even taking that into account, it is underdeveloped and lacking emotional impact.

Other than that, there are at least four scenes that perhaps were meant to be funny or cool, but came out ridiculous instead. Also, since the director is known for action movies, it should be added that the few action scenes are underwhelming.

Decision to Leave has won many awards, so I had low expectations from the outset. The conclusion is that it is below average both as a mystery and as a romance. Maybe the director lacks experience in those genres.
