The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Well made but the ending falls a little flat
As someone who is by no means a historical expert this movie had decent atmosphere, from the props, sound design, set and the setting's CGI nothing abruptly brought me out of the moment. The antagonist's CGI wasn't the best but it adequate to good depending on the scene and didn't detract from the movie. The acting was pretty good. The first scene of the movie seemed misplaced and I personally feel like it would have been better near the end of the movie. The characters actually seemed pretty reasonable for a horror movie for most of the time. The only thing that really bothered me was that later on in the movie the characters seemed to make multiple illogical decisions. It felt like a few times it was even bordering on Diabolus ex Machina .
**** Spoiler alert ****
For example things like people leaving their guns, splitting up during a confrontation, etc. One that really irked me was ear the end of the film one of the characters was climbing down from the mast during a conflict, yet he decides to stop for what felt like more than enough time to climb the rest of the way down and when faced with a probable enemy instead of drawing his gun he stares blankly towards the antagonist. This leads him to be knocked down away from the group furthering the plot. Also there was a storm that seemed to come out of no where, from mostly calm to a roaring ocean in what felt like seconds.
**** end of spoilers ****
Overall even though the film was plagued with some issues it was still mostly enjoyable to watch and even had an ok but not great ending. It could have easily earned another one or two more star rating with a few relatively simple changes.
Naked and Afraid: Solo (2023)
Naked and Afraid: with a Film Crew
They're not truly alone since, during the daytime, they're followed by a film crew. Part of the experience of being on your own is having no other humans to interact with, and feeling the anxiety, fear, and suspense that come with it. However, having a camera crew to interact with, or at least to monologue to, significantly diminishes this element. On top of that, according to articles online, the participants are only compensated for the time away from their jobs. While an all-expenses-paid vacation is not the worst thing in the world, the show could at least offer a prize to give contestants a reason to persevere.
