There could be spoilers...
B-Movie lovers will love "Island of the Cannibal Death Gods." This is a real piece of independent filmmaking. Shot on a low budget, this film was able to deliver a true homage to the B-Movie genre. Director Jeff Freeman did his homework, knowing that what make those old B-Movie classics great was nudity and gore, often accompanied with over the top acting, bad sound and other sub-par attributes. But there is a bit of magic to these bunch of crazy films that make them gel together and make audiences come back for more.
This film basically follows a movie star, his brother-in-law and his agent as they try to get away from it all (we really don't know why) onto a charter boat trip. They meet up with a kick-butt captain who leads them on an adventure they didn't expect.
Right off the bat, you know something is amiss, especially because the opening sequence has a bit of horror. But then, in true B-Movie style, the next half hour or so is exposition, filled with scary stories, small talk and comic banter. This bit gets to be a bit boring. I have to say I walked away and came back several times, but I am glad I did! Once the suspense began and the action and horror happened in earnest, I kept my eyes glued to the screen. And I jumped really high at least once! And yes, folks, there is nudity and gore... and it wasn't really done over the top... but it was done in such a way that it seemed fairly realistic (well, not the far-fetched plot, but the blood! Okay, maybe it was a bit gory). The characters are actually developed a bit in this film too and work on their relationships with each other in this high-stress situation. Let me tell you, the acting at first was okay (almost too good for a B-movie!), but as the situation got more and more tense, it got more and more realistic! Although Flo, as the captain, had that smirk on her face and take charge attitude throughout.
The other thing is the fight scenes, choreographed by Russ Shucks Jones added so much to the story and seeing the captain fight off men twice her size was excellent. It's always nice to see women kick butt ... and in this film all of them do!! The locations also added production value, and the fact that there was a boat and a plane used.
But what makes this film brilliant is the end. DO NOT miss the end. Any little mishaps throughout were irrelevant once I watched the end. I did not see that twist coming at all! It put a big smile on my face.
I would recommend seeing this film. It is pure fun for B-Movie lovers!
