The Martha Mitchell Effect (2022)
Definitely Not A Mountain Out Of A Molehill
Nixon said it himself, if it hadn't been for Martha there wouldn't been a Watergate scandal.
She was not an alcoholic. She was not crazy. She simply told the truth.
This could have easily been a full length documentary. It should have been. Would have loved to have known about Martha's childhood. Also, her and her husband's relationship with their child. What was the Mitchell's life like before they went to Washington DC? How did they meet? I have so many questions that weren't addressed. This brief documentary is very well done and a perfectly adequate thumbnail sketch of this pivotal moment in history.
Judy (2019)
Missing Judy's Voice
I just don't get it. In the opening scene, Judy is told that the one thing that separates her from all the other little girls in the country, is her voice.
But we don't get Judy's one-of-a-kind, miracle voice. We get Renee's. And Renee's voice is fine. She can sing. But Renee's voice is not Judy's voice (no one's is) and this is a movie about Judy Garland's life...and voice.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2017)
Marvelous (...and not so marvelous)
So much to like. The production values are intoxicating. The clothes, the cars, the hair styles, that diner, that department store! The supporting cast is terrific.
But Midge...the heart of this story...is the least likable of all the characters...and that's not good. Who is she? I'm not sure. And certain choices by the writers don't help. Like...who is watching her children? At the Catskills resort? At home her parents, the cook, and her neighbor babysit. But Midge seems almost childless most of the time. A baby and a toddler are a full-time job, physically and psychologically. She seems almost completely unencumbered. It's weird and takes the viewer out of the story.
Why does Midge torpedo Jane Lynch's character? It seemed spiteful and unwarranted. It makes the audience not want to root for her. I mean, who does such a thing to another performer? It goosed the plot, yes, but at what price? A sloppy choice by the writers that makes the viewer think, "Well, that was nasty, Midge."
But...oh, the clothes and cars and hair styles...!
Shelby American (2019)
What's with the non-stop background music?
Such a great story. Terrific archival photos and footage. But mother of god, the constant music is enough to make you stop watching.
Didn't they trust the story?
