Amarcord (1973)
Much fuss about very little
I've just finished watching Amacord, having rented it on the recommendation of other IMDb users, whose aggregated opinion I very often agree with. This one really misses the mark and was one of the most uninteresting movies I've seen for a very long time.
Perhaps it was the DVD transfer, but the quality of the imagery was generally washed-out and nothing special. The soundtrack sat on the fence between quaint and monotonous, verging on the latter.
The story didn't seem to be going anywhere for most of the film and (spoiler) ultimately didn't. If you're a fan of imagery for the sake of imagery then perhaps this film is worth watching, but watch it on fast-forward as I suspect this would make it almost entertaining.
The Legend of the Tamworth Two (2004)
Babe, but without any sense of style
There's not much to say about this effort, other than it may well appeal to very young children or people with a very, very soft spot for pigs.
The problem with the Legend of the Tamworth Two is that it does not clearly separate fact from fiction. A simple documentary presented in an appropriate fashion would have been a far more entertaining way of telling the story. That said, the parody of Quint from Jaws was engaging, briefly.
If you are a big Babe fan, this may be your cup of tea. If you're not, it won't be.
'Nuff said.
Born Romantic (2000)
Entertaining British nothing-to-it predictable romantic comedy
If you like run-of-the-mill British romantic comedies a-la This Year's Love and Four Weddings and a Funeral, you'll like this film. There are no twists to confuse the less discerning cinema goer and plenty of famous (to British eyes) faces to make you feel warm and cosy.
The characters are easy to understand and not particularly deep, each with his or her own quirk. A number of storylines run in parallel, with the links between them being a taxi driver who routinely delivers them to and from a London salsa club. At various points throughout proceedings, John Thomson and Ian Hart appear in a greasy spoon, with Hart's character dishing out not-so-useful information on the fairer sex to the lovelorn Thomson. If nothing else, these two make the film worth watching.
All in all, a reasonable use of two hours of your life.
