Welcome to Wrexham: Goals (2024)
Shocking level of swearing
My wife and I have been looking forward so much to this third season. The story of Wrexham has been fantastic to follow. Sadly the dressing room scenes are appalling to watch. The foul mouthed manager and his assistant launch barrages of bullying style abuse. The F word is fired from the mouths of these guys approximately every 3 words. To sit watching this with my wife, just makes me feel embarrassed. I can't recommend the programme to friends or family because I wouldn't want to be associated with this level of profanity. We love Ryan and Rob and most of the staff. Unfortunately it's horrible to imagine children being exposed to the vitriol and swearing.
House of the Dragon: Driftmark (2022)
The point where I gave up.
I tried so hard to like this.
To clarify, I watched every episode of Game of Thrones and loved it.
I watched nearly 7 episodes of House of the Dragon, enough to give an opinion.
But this dirge of an episode, clearly filmed at a point when the money had run out and there was no money left for lighting, was the end of my tether. I hit the exit button on my remote and declared, "that's it for me, I can't stand any more. Incomprensible or pointless dialogue, speaking about people that I just don't care about and places with unintelligible names.
I can't say that I enjoyed any of the previous episodes, but hoped that things would get better,
At time of writing this episode scores 9.2 on IMDB so I was entitled to hope.
I'm sorry, but life is too short to waste any more time on House of the Dragon.
The Gray Man (2022)
A prime example of when MORE is not MORE.
Some humour, but wayyyyy too much ridiculous fighting. A little basis in reality would have been nice. Sped up jerky, obviously choreographed fight scenes and again sped up cars. The best of the film was when all the crazy stuff wasn't going on. Is this what the film makers really think that the audiences want these days. This reminded me of the way that the Marvel films went. I loved them when there was one superhero taking on a few bad guys, but now there has to be teams of superhero's, unlimited bad guys that come out of nowhere. In this film action scenes were so long and and so impossible to believe in that they became boring. I'd love to have sat in on the meetings where someone agreed, yes we need more people being shot, more cars exploding, another guy with a bazooka another historic building damaged. The actors actually did a good job with what they were given.
The Bling Ring (2022)
Unbearable
I watched the first episode but I can't face anymore. The show is made in an interesting way but the it's like watching smug faced teenagers justifying theft in the way that a looter thinks it's ok to do what they do. I.e. " I can't afford what other people have, but I feel that I deserve it, so I'm just going to take it."
This might be for some people but I refuse to add to the viewing figures.
Days of the Bagnold Summer (2019)
Not for everyone
I honestly have no idea how people persuade other people to give them money to make films like this. My wife and I wanted a comedy, this was described as a comedy. We paid good money for it and didn't laugh once. If another product similarly failed to be "as described" we'd be able to get our money back. Watching this miserable teenager self indulgently speak and act so appallingly to his mother was just no fun at all. Watching his mum take verbal slaps in the face time after time was just not funny. Wrapping it up with a "gentle British comedy " tag just isn't good enough. I will however give credit to whoever was responsible for some superb framing shots .
Normal People: Episode #1.11 (2020)
Love this show but it's so frustrating
I don't know if this is an accurate portrayal of the way that people in this age group communicate, but the long silences, grunts and mutterings are so frustrating to watch.
I appreciate that these two are going through all kinds of mental anguish and realise that some people are too embarrassed to express their true emotions, but it makes for challenging TV. Having said that, the acting performances are astonishingly good.
Breeders: No Sleep (2020)
I actually laughed a lot
Maybe it's because I don't have children, maybe it's because I like both of the lead actors, maybe it's because I'm feeling smug that I'm not in the situation that our characters find themselves in. But much to my pleasant surprise, I found myself laughing a lot at this programme. I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of swearing and there's a lot on this, but the delivery of the swearing to emphasise the extreme frustration made it just about acceptable to me. The children are great too. This isn't outnumbered, it's dark. But not dark and complicated. My wife and will be watching more.
Crash and Burn (2016)
Interesting but.....
As a motor racing fan I was glad to have watched this and my score reflects the work of the documentary makers who I thought did a good job. However the driver Tommy Byrne is the sort of person that I would run a mile from. Not an easy watch because he comes across as so bitter and twisted.
Avenue 5: And Then He's Gonna Shoot Off... (2020)
So disappointed I could cry
I'm prepared to say that maybe this is just not my kind of humour. I can see where I'm supposed to laugh, but frankly I found this embarrassing. I really hope that this programme improves as there are some good people in it. Thank goodness for Hugh Laurie who is doing his best to make things funny. The Judd character is so annoying. I shall keep my fingers crossed for the next episode being better. If not, it'll be the last one that I watch.
Update, as promised I watched the third episode. In fact I watched it with my wife. About 5 minutes from the end when neither of us had laughed once, we turned to each other. Our looks said it all. "No more" Deleted from recording list. Sad, but life's too short. Instead we watched 6 minutes of a random stand up act and laughed 7 times in 5 minutes, just to check that "yes we did have the ability to laugh and a sense of humour", just in case it was us and not the awful Avenue 5.
The Party (2017)
Not for me
I watched this film because it was included in a list of best comedy films. I didn't laugh once, I winced.
Do you know those moments in life where you look back and wish that you could erase them from your memory. Well I couldn't help but imagine that the cast of superb actors that found themselves in this, find the fact that they took part in this film, to be one of those moments.
I respect everyone's opinion and their right to love this film. However, as per the title of this review, it just wasn't for me.
