Enigma (2001)
Thumbs up!
I guess I could write a lot about this movie... I could write about the interesting, semi-historical-but-not-boring plot and about how gorgeous Jeremy Northam is... I could mention some great performances and how sexy Jeremy Northam looks like in that hat of his... I could even talk about Mick Jagger's cameo or Jeremy Northam's sly smile but what I really, really want to do is to set the record straight about Kate Winslet "being fat"! She was pregnant for Heaven's sake! And even if she had put on a few extra pounds, she looked normal! Besides, anorexic/bulimic bodies do not mean elegance, they mean sickness! (I guess I turned my comment into a manifesto!)
Moulin Rouge! (2001)
Breathtaking!
This is a complex movie made out of a simple, unfortunately sad, story. I think that transforming a basic boy-meets-girl-falls-in-love-and-one-of-them-dies plot into a masterpiece is the work of a genius, but you can't expect less from Baz Luhrmann, now can you? Ok Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor aren't exactly Julie Andrews and Frank Sinatra but the bottom line is that they gave wonderful performances, despite the singing, and they had a real chemistry between them, which is something you don't get everyday. This is the kind of movie that goes to the extremes. Either you love it or you hate it. But most important, this is a movie about love. Since nobody really understands love, don't try to understand Moulin Rouge, just feel it!
Mr. Wrong (1996)
The most pathetic excuse for a movie I've ever seen!
When I rented this I was expecting a funny, romantic movie and all I got was a long, long, long, boring story that not even Bill Pullman or Joan Cusack could make any better. The movie is full of scenes that will make you go "DUH", "YEWWW" and "I want my money back!". So, in case you're considering watching "Mr. Wrong", change your mind right now and forget about it. It's really not worth your time.
O Pátio das Cantigas (1942)
A masterpiece!
This is one of the most hilarious films ever made in Portugal. It's full of those little jokes everybody remembers, even today! The actors transformed this, rather simple story, into a masterpiece! This movie is a definite "must see".
Save the Last Dance (2001)
Not interesting, not fun, not even cute!
This movie doesn't have anything new or innovative, just that lazy "black&white relationship face a racist society" cliché! But in the end... What a shocker! Love wins! C'mon, it's old news! The dance sequences are cool but it felt like Flashdance all the way. Everytime Julia Stiles danced I got a déjà vu feeling... I guess it can be considered a good movie by many but it's not really my kind of thing. Thank God I didn't have to pay a ticket to see it, otherwise it would have been a waste of money!
Much Ado About Nothing (1993)
Made me love the play even more!
Much Ado About Nothing has always been one of my favorite plays but this adaptation made me like it even better! The actors were terrific and the story... well... Can you beat Shakespeare? Thumbs up!
A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999)
One of my favorite movies!
Not only am I a huge fan of Shakespeare, I also love all the cast of Midsummer Night's Dream. They all really made the magic of the "Dream" come true! But the movie is not just the actors, it's everything, from the music to the costumes. One of the things that fascinated me more than anything was the make-up! It gave the fairies, especially Titania this magic aura that is really their essence. They looked so simple but radiant at the same time. Michelle Pfeiffer, for example, was glowing beauty and talent. Rupert Everett was majestic and Stanley Tucci was fantastical. I only hope they make more movies like this!
Bridget Jones's Diary (2001)
It's great!
I've just saw it for the first time and it's really great! Renee Zelwegger is a really cute Bridget, Hugh Grant is a fantastic Daniel and last, but not least, Colin Firth is an excellent Darcy, but that was to be expected right? "Darcys" are his specialty!!! You should really see "Bridget Jones's Diary"! That is if you wanna have a laugh and enjoy a cute love story!
Aristocrats (1999)
What about Cecilia? And what about Sarah's daughter?
I've read some comments on this mini-series and I agree with each and every word I read. This is a great mini-series, the actors are fantastic, the story is delightful but there are some plot holes... Cecilia dies of (I think) tuberculosis and we get to see her lying on her death bed with Caroline by her side. But more than that, what the hell happened with Sarah's daughter? The one she had with Lord William... We understand that she had two boys with Cap. Napier but what happened to her daughter? We never see her again... But, even with a a few plot holes, this mini-series is, nevertheless one of the best I've seen!
Pearl Harbor (2001)
I think it was very good
I just wanted to say that I liked this movie very much. It resembles Titanic but this one is so much better! I think people are entitled to their own opinion and, of course, you can't always please Greeks and Trojans, so, there will always be people who are gonna love it, people that don't really have an opinion about it and people who are gonna hate it! I'm in the first category!
Scarlett (1994)
Gable & Leigh will always be Rhett & Scarlett
I'm not a fanatic of GWTW but I'm a fan and I must confess that I only read the end of the sequel that Ripley wrote... ;)
I think this mini series was good but it could have been so much better! And, no matter how good Timothy Dalton and Joanne WK were in their performances (and I think they were pretty good), Gable and Leigh will always be Rhett and Scarlett! The characters are famous because of the actors and vice-versa! It was hard not to stand in the shadow of those legends!
It's interesting to see but not the excellent sequel it could have been, specially for a film like GWTW!
