The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
I liked it!
If you enjoyed in bruges then I definitely recommend giving this a go. I say this because you will get an idea of the fantastic chemistry that Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrel have with one another.
It's an odd film but that's definitely not a criticism and if I'm being honest it was a breath of fresh air from the over the top Hollywood style flicks we are constantly having shoved down our throats
I can certainly understand why people won't like this film, its not for everyone but the 2 star reviews are not warranted. You have the appreciate it's existence.
If you have a dry sense of humour and do not mind slow paced then this will be right up your street.
Cheaper by the Dozen (2022)
Absolutely awful
This isn't a movie. It's an attempt by Disney to cram propaganda of todays talking points down everyones throats.
Everything just looks so out of place. I understand the need for diversity in our current climate, but using the template of the original cheaper by the dozen is incredibly stupid. .
Why couldn't Disney just create a new IP with some fresh ideas that made sense? Instead of remaking a film about a wholesome white family and replacing them with a wholesome black one. You have three white family members, it just doesn't make sense.
Immediately when the film begins you see the "Black lives matter" logo in one of the windows which became abundantly clear that this wasn't going to be a fun family movie. This hammers home even more when you realise the dogs are called "Joe Biden" and "Barrack Obama". It's political messaging disguised as a film.
Honestly, Disney should be ashamed that they are using kids films to promote political identity.
I'm British and really don't care for this type of stuff. We view movies as a form of escapism, not to be indoctrinated with left or right politics.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
The high scores are a joke. Do not listen to them
I honestly did not anticipate just how bad this movie could be. I figured it would be a paint by numbers cheesy slasher flick at the very least, but to call it that would be an insult to cheesy slasher flicks.
This film is awful. The acting is terrible, the script is painstakingly bad and the story nonsensical. How could they get this so wrong? It doesn't matter how low your expectations are going in to this because you will still be left disappointed.
It gets 2 stars instead of zero because at least they didn't skimp out on the gore.
One of the worst films I've ever seen.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Loved it and hated it
This series is a hard one to judge for me because I found parts of it absolutely genius and other parts really, really bad.
The whole premise of this show is wonderfully bizarre and Father Paul Hill completely sells you the story with his excellent performance. Honestly, it's worth watching the series alone just to see this character, the score and cinematography are immersing and it does a good job at building this creepy atmosphere.
Sadly all of this gets bogged down when (in my opinion) it completely falls apart towards the end. It blew my mind just how disjointed it felt tonally to the rest of the series. You also get incredibly long and boring lines of dialogue between some characters who are just not interesting and there are a few of them.
But this still gets a 7 from me because at it's peak it can be genius and the ending is entirely subjective.
The Irishman (2019)
Classic Scorsese. But overrated.
Calling this overrated will probably be controversial on here, but I have to say it when I read reviews of people calling this the best film of the decade etc.
I love Scorsese, Goodfellas is in my top three films of all time. At times The Irishman flows just as well as that, and when its singing that tune it's a pleasure to watch. However, it struggles a little during the middle of the film. What I mean by this is that the film slightly fails to keep you engaged because it's the timeline moves so quick. I got a little lost in understanding exactly what was happening on screen (Who was tied to what organised crime etc). I got the gist of it all eventually but the film expects you to understand what The Union of teamsters is, I'm from England so not familiar with American history. Despite some flaws I know it's a film which will get better with repeat viewings
I really did enjoy this film and it proves that these types of productions are still better than the majority of blockbuster trash we are fed at the cinema today. But just don't set your expectations rocket high, it's a very good film but it won't knock Goodfellas off its perch.
One last thing I will mention is that this could possibly be Robert Di Niro's best ever performance. He was stellar
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
You will either love it or hate it
This is without a doubt Tarantino' s most divisive film, you will either really enjoy this or hate it and slot of it depends on how you set your expectations. I really enjoyed it and I will tell you why.
Other than seeing one trailer I had no idea what to expect from this film, absolutely nothing. We as viewers are basically getting dropped in at the tail end of Rick Daltons career and we are given a glimpse of how this affects him and his stunt double best friend Cliff. There is no real plot to this film, but its just fascinating to see these characters interactions with one another. The acting from everyone here is superb, it's nothing like Tarantino has done before but you can still see his stamp throughout.
Despite the fact I had no real knowledge of the Manson Tate murders beforehand I really urge anyone who hasn't seen this film to just brush up on it. Much of this movie relies on the viewer to know what happened so by knowing these timestamps it will really add to the tension of the film 100%.
Set your expectations, know what you are sitting down to see and I think you will get alot out of this film. The last 25 minutes are some of the most brutal violence i have ever seen in cinema, worth the admission fee alone
