Wish (2023)
Entertaining, but forgettable. Just ok. Disney you can do better
So. For a 100 year anniversary movie, yes this movie was lacking.
But from just a watchability entertainment value? It was ok.
The animation is good. The Comedy and the side kick characters are great. Particularly Alan Tyduks character and his voice acting. Made it bearable.
But aside from the animation and the comedic/cute characters this movie doesn't really stick in the memory. To me this movie feels like the definition of "close, but no cigar".
Also let's break down the message of this movie. Usually Fairy Tales and even most Disney movies have an easily recognizable and uplifting theme or central message to them. IE Moana = Exploring is a great thing, Wreck it Ralph = Accept yourself and you're great the way you are, Elemental = Diverse people can work together and learn to love even when vastly different. Or themes similar to those concepts. So what was the actual message of this movie? Hard to tell. I think it was "Wishes aka dreams are worth being followed even if you risk getting hurt". Don't know if that's the best message to tell kids man. But here's the really weird thing about this movie- The King or the hero Asha are neither outright wrong or right. They're just particular points of view on what to do with the wishes.
What I mean is the King wants to protect wishes. That's not a bad goal right? He's trying to protect people. That's not a bad thing. It's just the way and method he's going about it that are bad.
Asha wants everyone to be free to follow their dreams/"wishes". She wants freedom for others. That's not a bad goal either. But what if there really are some wishes that shouldn't be granted because some people really do have fd up dreams that hurt others? Maybe some dreams really do require protection or at least guidance to work with other people.
Control without consent or support is Bad. And unrestrained freedom without boundaries or guidance is Bad. Appropriate guidance and organization with freedom of desire is good. It's the synergetic combination that's the goal and the sweet spot.
So ideally the King and Asha should have worked together to come up with something new and better that included both of them.
So that's what, intellectually at least, makes this Disney movie really unique. The "villain" the King isn't all bad. The "hero" isn't all good. Both of them are actually BOTH 'bad' AND 'good'. I 'WISH' that the King and Asha would have come together to creates something new and better though. That's my wish for this movie. Do a Remake on this Disney. You're good at remakes. Maybe you'll get it right this time.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Entertaining. Loosely Based on the Lore. Green light for the future.
*Attention Show Spoilers ahead*
Firstly I am a die hard Tolkien fan having read the Silmarillion, Appendices, Lost tales, etc. Multiple times. And even though the stories presented in this show are not 100% lore accurate, it's still a delight to watch.
The world building, production, and multiple intriguing plot lines will suck you in and make you forgive any artistic licensing done to the story. The Visuals are outstanding. And the acting and music, while not perfection, are still very good.
Morfydd Clark is fantastic as a young Galadriel. Looking forward to how her character and acting grows over the series. She brings a feistiness and fierceness to the character of Galadriel that one could see being possible for a younger version of Galadriel without the wisdom of greater age and eons of life. Also personally really enjoyed the actor who played Gil Galad. Spot on.
As for the multiple storylines we have a young Galadriel on a mission to hunt down Sauron and destroy him for killing her brother. Family vengeance. Then we see an ancestor of the hobbits take guardianship and care over what appears to be one of the first Wizards in Middle Earth. Next we follow a young Elrond in his attempt to negotiate a working relationship between the elves and the dwarves as part of his apprenticeship to Celebrimbor (a renowned elven smith). And finally we have an elven scout on the Elvish outlying border investigating a mysterious destruction of a town to find its source.
As you can see a lot going on in this show. And it's only the first 2 episodes. My hope is that we see the writers condense the multiple directions down to 1 or 2 storylines so it's not so busy in the future. Otherwise it could be too much at once.
Still a great start with a lot of potential. Well worth watching and any Lord of the Rings fan will enjoy it. Fingers crossed for episodes to come!!!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Not Great, but not Horrible
"You never appreciate what you have until you lose it".
Honestly I think a lot of these reviewers are spoiled on their entertainment content. Don't go into She Hulk expecting 'C America' the winter soldier', 'Iron Man', or 'Avengers Infinity War'. I mean you put your expectations that high of course you're going to be disappointed.
This is a campy fun light hearted romp geared for Millennials/Gen Z. Popcorn Entertainment. Nothing more nothing less.
So for what it was....it was ok. Yes it has woke/politically correct messaging which is a bit cringey and annoying. But it's still entertaining.
Is it a Marvel masterpiece? Obviously not. Is it the dumpster fire all you fanboys seem to think it is? Nope. Not that bad either.
All in all just a zone your brain out fun entertaining watch. Not great, not horrible. Just Dumb light hearted fun. Think Three Stooges or Ghostbusters level and your in the ball park.
All in all I give it a B.
Supernatural (2005)
Amazing show. Weak finale.
If you want the top notch Supernatural experience just watch all the seasons and stop at season 15 episode 19.
Episode 19 was the real finale.
Episode 20 had the dumbest death for Dean of all time.
Just don't watch 15 episode 20 and enjoy the rest.
All things considered this is one of my favorites of all time. Because of the plots. The humor. The action. The acting. And in the end the depiction of brotherly love. Which one of us doesn't want a brother like Sam or Dean? We all do.
This show has comforted and entertained me throughout the years and I am grateful to it.
I am grateful to the crew. Grateful to Jensen, Jared, Misha, and the gang. Grateful to the writers. Grateful to the directors.
Thank you for your Labor of love. It has been a pleasure to watch your journey and come along for the ride in the back of the Impala
Because it's about the journey and what the open road might bring, not about the destination.
So shed a single man tear for the end of this epic ballad of brothers. And head out on the highway looking for adventure.
*Cracks a cold one*- here's to you Supernatural.
The Hunt (2020)
Entertaining, gripping, yet sad
This is definitely an action horror suspense movie with elements of comedy and politics thrown in.
Although it is adrenaline inducing and goes for the "shock factor" I found it kind of sad and "not helping" the current climate.
I mean yes it's supposed to be a satire and everything I get it, but the intensity and level of hatred people in both parties feel for each other- that is very blatantly portrayed in this film- I think is a very real thing. And a very exhausting and tragic thing.
Logic aside- hatred prevents love. And loving each other is supposed to be what it's all about.
Call me preachy but this just reminded me how much hate is in the world and how little genuine compassion and love is left in it.
As a commentary on politics I realize it's supposed to be poking fun at all sides and giving an outlet for the animosity both ideologies feel for each other- but that doesn't make the animosity right.
Here's an idea everyone- instead of killing each other how about we forgive and actually make an effort to get to know that person we hate so much?
Why not actually try to be the neighbors and friends we're supposed to be for one another? And not argue, quarrel, and try to kill each other.
Instead keep the focus on helping one another, producing, and genuinely loving each other.
That's the world I want to live in. Not this selfish, money-driven, fear-based, apocalypse-berg you all have turned it into.
How we treat each other and the choices we make create the world we live in.
So let's make it a good one. Make it a better one. Please. You have the choice. You have the power. Let's choose it together.
Young Justice (2010)
Like Teen Titans and Justice League had a love child. As a whole 8 out of 10
Season 1- The beginnings- 8/10
Season 2- The grand epic- 10/10
Season 3- A new direction/A set up- 6/10
So I am a huge DC fan. Have been ever since I watched Justice League cartoon as a kid on Saturdays. There's a lot to like about this tv show. And a few ldetractors. But the positives far outweigh the negatives in my opinion.
As many here have said Seasons 1 and 2 are the shining stars with Season 3 being not as good. But Season 3 does have some redeeming elements to it.
o l
Season 1 is the modern equivalent to the original teen titans cartoon. A small group of young heroes gets its start and learn to work together and become heroes in their own right. This season feels a lot like the first spiderman movie- a solid start.
Season 2 is the pinnacle of the show. Amazing plot, good characters, and honestly one of the best finales on a tv show I've witnessed in a long time. This is where young justice hits its stride and really comes into its own. Season 2 is jam packed and worth watching from start to finish. Excellent story telling, great characters, and solid action.
Now Season 3....Is slower paced. Has less interesting characters (at times). And yes theres a lot of "forced cultural sensitivity" and "political correctness" in it. And yes, some characters are made gay just for the hell of it, which is annoying. And yes there is also some cringey preachiness you have to fast forward through too.
BUT, if you can fast forward or skip those parts, THEN you can view this Season for what it is- A set up for the next season. There are many characters, storylines, and plot devices that are left unresolved to clearly be vetted out in the next season of Young Justice. In particular a very promising showdown between two excellent bad guys. Really hope we get to see that and see it done right for season 4.
And even in this season 3 there are some gems of episodes. The episode where they have to rescue violet or the galaxy will be mind controlled is a great one with some quality action scenes. And the Season finale has some very emotionaol and stunning moments. The revelation of a past betrayal and an unexpected/tragic betrayal of a main character give it high emotional stakes making it a good watch of a finale.
So even flaws warts and all, every season of Young Justice is worth a watch at least once. Just read the synopsis of the first 3rd of season 3 and jump into when the Outsiders team gets formed and then watch from there, skipping the PC preachey parts. Then Season 3 is not so bad.
All things considered I give Young Justice a solid 8 out of 10 for all seasons taken as a whole.
The pluses FAR outweigh the minuses on this one.
The Road to El Dorado (2000)
Adventure, Music, Story
This one's got it all.
Proves why DreamWorks is better than Disney. Wish DreamWorks still did stuff like this.
This has got a great story, lots of laughs, and contrary to what some of the other reviewers complain about- some very catchy tunes. Not as memorable as say Lion King or the Hunchback of Notre Dame- but still just as fun and enjoyable.
There's some great animation, hearty laughs, and even some New Mexico/Southwestern culture in this one!
Kids of all ages will enjoy it for it's great entertainment value.
Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood (2019)
All tension, no release. All build up, no conclusion. Waste of time.
So what the FK is up with all these glowing movie reviews? Did Tarintino slip you all a Mickey or something before you watched this? Are you sucking his ck or something? Are you on his pay roll? This movie was NOT a 10 star movie. 6 maybe. If you're generous.
Is it set in the 60s and has the music, costumes, and style of that time period? Yes. Does it have Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Leo DiCaprio? Yes. Do they do some good acting? Sure. Good music? Yeah. Then what's the problem? Well I'll tell ya:
IT HAD NO POINT. NO PLOT. A movie can have everything but if it doesn't have a meaningful story then it's useless. This felt more like a fictional documentary than a drama, comedy, or movie. I mean where's the story? Is there a connection between some of the hippie characters and the main characters late in the movie? Yes, but it's tangential and not core relevant. Where's the overall story? The overall point? The conclusion? And was there an action scene in the end? Yes but it was hardly a climax, and definitely not worthy of a 2 hour build up.
I mean I kept waiting for a relevant point or a final conclusion or a plot point you could hang your hat on and it never came. I mean Quentin Tarintino is a master of suspense, but all suspense and no resolution makes the suspense meaningless. It defeats the purpose. So even though this movie got the time period right it failed to provide a relatable story which makes it boring and a waste of time.
MY conclusion: Some good settings and music, but no point. Skip it.
