Harriet (2019)
A bit too Hollywood but Greatness can't be Denied!
Hollywood will always add a bit extra to make movies more dramatic or scandalous for entertainment value. So, NO the movie was not a documentary by any means! However, the struggle was real! The tenacity and compassion of a Slave...a black woman slave was real! Think about it...there is no lower denominator than what Harriet was during slavery...the lowest of the low.
That is the value and the importance of the movie/story and what I choose to focus on. The determination, grit, compassion and relentless desire that it must have taken each and every time when attempting to free others- not knowing what new obstacles were ahead. As women, we do not have perfect equality. Nor is it present as a person of color as an extra added layer of struggle. If I am to take a page from Harriet's character...I choose to focus on what we do have which is great than what was all the yesterdays before. My ancestors are free due to great women like Harriet Tubman and Susan B Anthony. On top of that-great talented actors and actresses where able to showcase their incredible gifts in Hollywood where stories of this type (fictional or not) is a rare gem...even if it was a diamond in the rough. I'll take my DIAMOND!
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Fantastic Movie with Pure Grit!!!
I was pleasantly surprised by how much this movie kept me interested. I was aware of the previous terminator movie but do not follow the series enough to remember where one left off and where the other begins. The movie stood on its own merit; whether you follow or remember the previous one. This movie was sheer good, heart-pumping excitement!
Linda was the type of badass veteran fighter you hope to know if ever fighting a tenacious killing machine! Arnold came in at just the right time with a lot to lose and an appreciation for life-which was easy to believe. I see no reason for Arnold to be ashamed or Linda to have no value simply because she is older- as some have suggested. Badass, is still Badass if that is what you got. This movie has it, so butter up the popcorn and let the excitement begin!!
Black and Blue (2019)
Right versus Wrong never goes away!
This movie was an adrenaline rush a minute once the story-line was set. Tyrese and Naomi were an amazing pair! The story of right versus wrong will always be one of those that you cheer on for most. The dilemma of going against those on your job! Especially when that job is Law Enforcement. I believe it would make most second guess themselves...knowing right from wrong is the easy part. STANDING up for it is not. Great movie!
Brian Banks (2018)
Wow! Eyes Wide Open
Just saw the latest superhero movie tonight. Although it was not advertised as one. I am talking the new movie Brian Banks. Don't get me wrong-I enjoy superhero movies and even attended Comic Con when I used to be able to afford it. Tonight, was a great reminder that we are the true superhero's with comics mimicking how sensational we can be as humans when we rise above injustice. Brian Banks is played outstandingly by actor Aldis Hodge who is amazingly convincing as Banks. Actress Sherri Shepard plays the role as Banks mother, who is everything one could want as a loving and protective mother. Greg Kinnear as the attorney Justin Brooks provides the right touch of truth about our judicial system, while exuding gut-wrenching care to this heartfelt classic hopeful. This movie is as compelling as The Blind Side-another based on true events story. Except you get blind-sided in a different way. As uncomfortable as this movie makes you feel, due to its disgusting unfairness faced by Brian Banks. You can't help but feel sorrow for what must be missing inside someone propelled to tell such sickening lies on the innocent-played perfectly by actress Xosha Roquemore as the accuser Kennisha Rice. This movie made me mad, cry and grateful for the freedom and life that I have. Test yourself, see how feel when you come out. All I can say is Wow, my eyes are now wide open.
