November 13: Attack on Paris (2018)
The evil that men don't do
I really cannot recommend this 3 part documentary highly enough. The bravery show by the victims and the emergency services is inspiring. The description of mobile phones ringing amongst the fatalities was haunting.
My only very small critique is why there were no photos of the inside of the locations. It would be helpful to know what some of the areas described look like, especially in the Bataclan.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Wanted to like it but hated it
One cliche after another, average songs, unlikeable characters. I like Lady Gaga and honestly feel that she was the only good thing about this film.
Two for Joy (2018)
I absolutely love this film
I'm a big fan of films focussing on social issues, and really enjoyed this. There's nothing to laugh at... it's pretty bleak in all honesty. It reminded me of caravaning holidays as a kid in the 70s and 80s.
The cast is great, but it's the kids that steal the show, Troy in particular is brilliant.
It's not for everyone, but give it a chance.
Wormwood (2017)
Unnecessarily complicated and overly long
This could easily have been 60 to 90 minutes long. The story, whilst interesting, didn't need to be dragged out over six episodes. Most of the theories and conclusions were played out in the first episode and repeated thereafter. The David Lynch production style didn't work for me either.
You, Me and Him (2017)
Couldn't get passed 20 minutes
Honestly thought this was dreadful, infantile crap. I really wonder how this got funding. Embarrassing.
Josie (2018)
Not great but worth watching
I really enjoyed the first hour of this. I couldn't tell where it was going to lead, and was fully engaged with the characters. I thought Sophie Turner was excellent. The last 20 minutes however ruined an otherwise good movie. The whole premise that this teenage girl could somehow track down the prison guards that assisted in her fathers' execution, seems incredibly far-fetched. To then have the resources to travel around the country killing them one by one and getting away with it is a stretch too far.
Escape at Dannemora (2018)
Very good indeed
Enjoyed this immensely. I thought the pace was just right. Benicio Del Toro was genuinely terrifying.
Das Boot (2018)
An entertaining war drame
I enjoyed this overall, though I feel it's hugely disingenuous to call it Das Boot. It's not a patch on the original mini-series or the feature film of the same name.
It tries to be too many things - U-boat drama, resistance tale, love story etc., without doing any of them particularly well. The U-boat scenes especially seemed to lack the claustrophobic tension that the aforementioned titles managed to bring to the small screen. Oh, and where did they get that 8 man rowing boat from for the VIP switch?
But like I said, minor criticisms aside, it's worth watching.
Mountain Fever (2017)
The cat stole the show
Seriously, this must be one of the worst films I've ever sat through. Terrible acting (except for the cat), and no discernible plot line.
Somehow it got padded out to +90 minutes but it's slower than a two legged horse. Avoid like the plague.
