How It Ends (2018)
Bad title, worse movie.
How can you have your movie titled How it ends, when the movie HAS NO END? It literally does not end. It just stops in the middle of the movie and suddenly credits. That is just terrible.
Look I am all for trying different things with movies and shows. Things get stale. People copy each other over and over. We get the same type of movie/show done with different cast. I get it, you want to stand out and try something different. But this is... too different. There are some things that cannot be changed. Like having an actual resolution to the story.
You leave the audience feeling cheated. Tricked. Fooled. Etc... which is NOT what you want to make your audience feel.
This movie starts out decently and despite some shaky writing, there are some decent performances and compelling scenes. But the ending... I just can't get over it. Who thought that was a good idea? Watch this movie if you want to get into a story, then just have it turned off half way through. That is literally what happens here.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: The Great Wave (2022)
Losing momentum instead of gaining it.
I'm sorry but this show is losing any possible momentum it had from the first few episodes. Even if I try to look past all of the weird writing choices, like harfoots chanting no one walks alone while leaving someone behind because they are injured.... for just one example, even skimming over that, the show is incredibly boring right now.
Nothing that exciting is happening. No characters intrigue me enough to care what happens to them. I just also feel like Galadriel is such a terrible lead. Again not even getting to weird writing with her, just her on screen presence and how interested I am in watching while she is on screen, its like a 3 out of 10. I just don't care.
Look I love this type of fantasy setting. I eat this stuff up. I consume everything I can get my hands on that is even remotely fantasy. I love it all. So yes I will watch this show to see what happens. But you are kidding yourself if you compare this to GoT early seasons or even the peter Jackson trilogy in terms of quality. Those works are miles and miles above this show. Sorry I'm don't ranting. It just irks me because they are spending so much money on this show to make something that is just flat and boring. Such a waste.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Adar (2022)
It just lacks impact.
It's not terrible. Some interesting things happen. But they are never followed up or seem to have any real meaning. Fight scenes aren't horrible but again seem to lack something and feel hollow. Plus I feel like I can actually see the wires attached to actors hanging from the ceiling sometimes the way they defy physics and fly trough the air. Which is just weird because again the scenes are not terrible and with some grounding, some real direction, they could be fantastic.
Another real sore spot for me is I don't remember any character specifically, or even really care about any of them for that matter. Again, the actors aren't necessarily terrible, just not great either. I don't feel the reverence of these supposedly epic moments. Sometimes they seem to not really understand what emotion they want to convey to the audience, so that have these in-between looks on their faces. Which kills the moments.
Just like the first 2 episodes, the CGI is pretty good overall and some scenes I will give the credit they deserve for being gorgeous. Also some of the set pieces, armor, artwork, things of that nature are pretty good. But there is also a negative here as well because the thing that usually brings it all together for me is the music or the score. It might as well not be there. This shows music falls completely flat. It is just not good. There was even one scene I remember where I thought they made a mistake and it was the wrong track. It just did not work for the scene.
Amazon could be doing better. This show could be much more. This episode is an honest 5 because there are redeeming qualities but not much else.
Stranger Things: Chapter Nine: The Piggyback (2022)
Entertaining but to be frank, flawed.
To just summarize without going into too much detail this finale has some obvious flaws. But it is definitely entertaining as hell. The actors deliver outstanding performances (in my opinion). The production is off the charts. The music all fits together and I loved it. Definitely a fun ride. But when you start to think about what just happened there's a lot of that ... wait... how does that actually work? Or oh...I didn't know that was possible... moments.
There's also just a lot of feeling like ok we have to tie up this, finish that, bring this together. Its almost too neat. I was hoping for a sloppy mess of a finale. With characters dieing that make you wonder what the hell is going to happen in season 5? With things happening that you wouldn't be able to guess.
This finale episode is unfortunately both predictable and also somewhat unsatisfying, but still has a lot of that stranger things magic that makes it fun to watch.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Like others have said this honestly felt like a parody.
No way this can get higher than a 3 from anyone that enjoys good movies in anyway shape or form. It's just terrible.
Lines are delivered with such cringe you can feel it through the screen. You can feel the actors being uncomfortable with the terrible dialogue. Moments that are clearly supposed to be conveying some raw powerful emotion connecting to previous titles just fall absolutely flat. As if the entire movie is a parody of the matrix films original ideas. Look guys, were doing the matrix thing here, were having a cool fight scene! Were having a strong connection between Neo and Trinity! Were pulling the thing out of the back of their heads! Were doing the "oh wow I can fly" thing!! See its the matrix!! So cool!!! Wow!
Its painful to watch. It should not have been made. There is no reason for this movie to exist. And I am someone that did not actually hate Reloaded and Revolutions. I think they are slightly underrated. They do have flaws and were missing some of the original films magic but they are good entertaining movies in their own right. This movie is not even entertaining. Honestly there are almost zero redeeming qualities. I say almost because you could make a case for some of the CGI scenes. Some of them look somewhat decent and show what that medium is capable of today. But they completely miss what made the original so epic and amazing. Which was combining CGI with incredible REAL LIFE sets and pieces that grounded the entire film into reality and made it believable. The scenes in this movie just feel like its all in la la land. It isn't supposed to feel like make believe.
If they try to stretch this out into another trilogy I can only imagine how bad it will get from here. They need to re-watch the original trilogy and remember what made those movies great in the first place. Ugh.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
I just don't get it.
I can understand making changes to a story to make it a better fit for a TV series, or to make it easier to understand watching rather than reading the story. But that is not what is being done to this world. It is being utterly destroyed and changed into something completely different than what it is in the books.
I just don't like it. Maybe some people do.
This last episode, the Eye of the World, I just remember after reading that book and putting it down I was almost buzzing. It was just so good. So descriptive but interesting at the same time and I just could not stop reading till I was finished. I did not even come close to caring about most of the characters in this TV series. They are doing something wrong. Something isn't right.
