The Good Dinosaur (2015)
One of the most underrated films
I watched this movie in the cinema when it first came out and absolutely loved it, but having seen all the bad reviews I decided to re-watch it 5 years later to find out if it actually was a terrible movie that my young brain was just too immature to fully comprehend. I loved it just as much this time around, if not more, with its stunningly realistic scenes, heartwarming friendships and cute comedy. I understand that it isn't up there with the classic Pixar creations like Toy Story or Monsters Inc, but it's still a pretty decent film, so I don't understand why there are so many poor reviews.
Tiger King (2020)
Mixed feelings
I finally decided to give in to the hype reviews of Tiger King and give it a watch. It was initially interesting, however soon declined after the infamous Carole Baskin episode. I decided to watch the rest anyway to find out how it ended, but that's the huge flaw with this documentary- it's based on rumours and speculation, interviewing lots of characters with different opinions, but there are hardly any real facts. It also doesn't bode well with me that the animal abuse shown throughout Tiger King seems to be glorified and not at all condemned as it should be. I'm not going to say it was awful, because it was interesting enough for me to finish it, however I definitely wouldn't encourage other people to watch this drivel.
After Life (2019)
A perfect recipe of heartache and comedy
I'm not someone who commonly cries at the likes of a movie or TV show, but After Life brought me to tears several times- throughout just one episode never mind the whole thing! Beginning the series knowing it was crafted by comedy genius Ricky Gervais, I had absolutely no idea what to expect but I expected it to be good, and what an understatement that is! It astonishes me that a story with such a sad background can bring non-tacky, genuine humour but Gervais has only gone and done it. An absolute masterpiece.
Still Game (2002)
Classic comedy
I may not understand every word of the show (especially when Isa speaks!) but I still laugh anyway because Still Game really is the work of comedy geniuses! Being a show with quite a lot of seasons (9, I think), you'd think the quality may have dropped, but I can't recall a single bad episode, and that is a very rare quality of TV shows. I'd recommend Still Game to anyone who likes to laugh, because trust me you'll be doing a lot of it!
Zootopia (2016)
Fun for all the family
Zootropolis centres around a bunny, whose life-long dream is to become a cop, and a fox, initially a criminal but this is a Disney movie so it was never going to end that way, who end up working together to find a missing otter. I didn't have particularly high hopes for this movie but though I'd give it a watch and I'm very glad I did. Comedic at times but entertaining throughout, Zootropolis is a fun film for all the family. It also sends a great message about discrimination and how we're really all the same regardless of our different physical attributes. Worth a watch :)
1917 (2019)
Beautifully portrayed and a moving performance
I don't usually like war films but I decided to watch this anyway, and boy I'm glad I did. The actors did an amazing job at bringing the characters to life, it made for a very believable and moving performance. The crew did a fantastic job with the set, props and costume, and it almost felt like I too was a soldier in the trenches. The story was beautifully told and the room was very somber by the end of the showing. 10/10 definitely recommend and would happily watch again.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Has as many flaws as the Shard
I have so many problems with this film I don't even know where to begin. Obviously with a movie like this violence is to be expected but this film was just violent for the sake of it. It didn't add to the storyline, and at times was just uncomfortable to watch (and not in a good way). Harley Quinn didn't seem to know whether she was a hero or a villain. A villain should be evil to the core and never consider anyone else's thoughts or feelings, but Harley Quinn was doing bad things sometimes, helping people other times and feeling guilt for doing wrong. And when she was doing bad, did I feel empathy for those she wronged? No. And by the looks of it, everyone in the cinema felt the same way. I looked around and it was just a sea of silent, blank faces. The attempts at comedy were pathetic, the audience laughed once throughout the entire showing, which was right at the end of the film. And the character of Huntress? Completely pointless and added no value to the film whatsoever, if she wasn't in it the story would've gone exactly the same way. Disappointing.
The Lorax (2012)
Great film highlighting a deeper meaning
I can't understand why this film has so many poor reviews! I personally think it was a good film and really highlights the problems of deforestation and the destruction we are causing to the Earth. I almost gave this film 6 stars but I just couldn't bring myself to do so when it sends out such a great message, portrayed well, and it's a nice film even if you just want to watch something to entertain you without having to think about the deeper meaning.
The Simpsons (1989)
Over 30 seasons for a reason
This is such a good show- you don't make over 30 seasons for no good reason! It's so carefully crafted and put together, there's so many references that you blink and you'll miss it, and jokes that just go over your head if you don't pay attention. It's funny for both kids and adults alike and appeals to everyone, Matt Groening and co are geniuses, not forgetting the likes of Harry Shearer voicing I don't know how many characters! It's hard to believe that over 600 episodes have been made and the quality is still there but it's true.
The Big Bang Theory (2007)
Funniest American sitcom
I was sceptical as to how good this would be when I first started watching as American sitcoms just aren't usually my thing...12 seasons later and I'm sad to say goodbye. All the characters are just so different which brings diversity and allows us to see them grow as the show goes on, and if you were to take one out it just wouldn't be the same. It also makes the show funnier as you can approach jokes from so many more ways. The final seasons, I'll admit, perhaps took a slight hit in quality but nothing too major so I think they ended it and the right time. A very good and funny watch.
Back to the Future (1985)
Best. Film. Ever.
This is an absolute timeless classic of a film, I've no idea how many times I've seen it but it will never get old. It was released over 30 years ago and has clearly stood the test of time. I have nothing bad to say, I can think of no flaws. The acting, music, background, casting, it's all perfect. Yet another masterpiece brought to you by Stephen Spielberg (has he ever made a bad film?!)
Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life (2016)
Better than expected
An American school story isn't typically something I would choose to watch myself but me and my younger sister were looking for something to watch on Netflix together and it seemed like something she'd like so I decided why not. The film was entertaining (however I think to say it was funny would be an exaggeration). It was also a lot darker than I expected with a selfish stepfather and a young boy who dies of cancer but I quite liked this aspect as it's not something you usually see in a film of this type so it brought something new and unexpected to the table. I would say it's about average but it's not too bad. If you can't find anything to watch this isn't a bad choice and I'm sure younger children would enjoy it.
