One of the best of the 80's
5 May 2006
The chemistry between Steve Martin and John Candy really works, and this comedy is well-written with many very funny scenes. I will agree with other posters the soundtrack is rather odd. Much of it was filmed in the Chicagoland area, including the two motel scenes. The rental car exchange, while profane, is very funny, as is the "you're going the wrong way" sequence.

Does anyone know if this movie was later edited for length? I remember the airplane scene being longer with a number of laughs that seem to be gone from current version. Missing: the airline cook who chopped off his finger, later found on the Singapore run. The woman whose hair falls into Steve Martin's meal. The old hard of hearing guy coughing and being offered a bun, then says, yes "flying's fun". These were some of the funniest moments in the film, but now appear to be gone.

Just re-visited this & still love it

I just went back and watched this again after many years and still find it one of the best movies ever made about movies. This "movie within a movie" has it all. Suspense, drama, comedy, great and numerous cameos, and some "inside Hollywood" jokes. One highlight is at the start where the actors are describing the best long opening tracking shots of all time while Robert Altman skillfully is showing you one at the same time! The Burt Reynolds cameo is very funny, sounds unscripted, and is one of many brilliant uses of this device. Favorite line: "waiter, this is a wine glass. I'd like my water in a water glass". The line comes from Tim Robbins, who is excellent as studio executive Griffin Mill.

A couple of good scenes but that's about it

Every once in awhile a very average movie has a couple of very funny scenes. In "The 40-year Old Virgin", Paul Rudd's character complaining to his boss about the Michael McDonald DVD and the "yah mo be there" comment are hilarious. I also enjoyed the angry exchange between the sales guys in the electronics store. Unfortunately, it goes down hill after these early scenes. The rest is the usual sexual formula that we've seen before. I thought Steve Carell was better in "Anchorman". Seth Rogan is quite good in this, and I've been a Jane Lynch fan for a long time and wish she had more scenes in this. Overall, if you are looking for a childish, somewhat raunchy sexual comedy, it probably will entertain you.
