Ripley (2024)
Breathtaking Black & White
I gave one more star just for The Stunning B&W. Most of us are familiar with The story and its adaption in the past.
So, What's new?
Well, For starters, Andrew Scott. That was the reason enough for me to watch.
I've seen and liked The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) very much. There are few more. All based on works of Patricia Highsmith (1955)
Tom Ripley is an Imposter, An expert in forgery and If needed, A killer too. In short, A Psychopath.
But very charming and likeable. And that's what helps him the most.
This version of Ripley is Vulnerable. He struggles, Make a mess just like anyone else in his place. Even forgets his own identity in stress. He runs from place to place and we get to see Italy like never before.
Cameraman Robert Elswit who won an Oscar for There Will Be Blood, Creates the same magic here.
Ripley is Delightfully dark and Constantly Creepy.
A must watch.
Merry Christmas (2024)
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!
So we're familiar with his films, his style.
Or, We think we are.
The one and only master of noir suspense / thriller right now in Bollywood.
Nobody does it like Raghvan.
Nobody teases us like Raghvan.
You keep looking for clues and motives, try to keep up with the plot twists. You try your hardest to imagine, predict.
And when you're proved wrong, you're the happiest person in the world. (at least that's how I feel)
This time, it's different. Good different or may be, even better.
Lesser shock value, more on emotional side.
Almost a perfect love story!
Without any melodrama.
I believe that's the best kind there is.
It's a slow burn at its best.
It takes its sweet time to reach at one of the best climax I've ever seen.
Whoever thought of bringing this duo together, deserves an applaud.
The film belongs to both of them.
Supporting cast is equally good.
I am not for the sharing plot in reviews.
Instead of Ho! Ho! Ho!,
Santa is more like Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! This time.
The Old Guard (2020)
Popcorn Action
Not going to go in story as you already know whatever you should (and more) because of its TMD trailer.
Immortal soldiers, terrorism, gun fights and Hand combats. Sounds familiar? Well, it is. Most of the times when an action film takes itself too seriously, things doesn't work. The Old Guard does not take itself seriously and that's where the problem lies. It should have...
With a bit more detailed work on the Back stories (when you know that these are the people that have been alive from centuries you expect something different and unique) , it could have been a classic.
Instead it ends up being a clichéd Popcorn Action.
Which also works at some level because of two leading ladies. So, give it a try.
I am counting on its sequel to be more intense and more intriguing.
Spanglish (2004)
Highly Underrated
Let me start by saying it's not your just another Adam Sandler movie. Though it has that undercurrent of humor, it's rich with human emotions. Allows and welcomes you to FEEL. Everything about this movie is just so right.
I am not going in to its plot or technicalities because there is no need to (only after watching this movie you'll understand what I am trying to say)
Paz Vega is so convincing (obviously) and outstanding as a caring mother who came to work and better life to US from Mexico with her daughter.
Adam Sandler plays what he plays in almost every movie.
A guy with a golden heart. A good, understanding husband. A great father. Make us feel for his character. As always, he is good.
Tea Leoni is superb as frustrated, nagging wife.
Cloris Reachman provides few laughs and she's a delight to watch.
Highly recommend.
The Hunger Games (2012)
what the hell is this !!?
to be honest i have not read the book or never even heard about it.i went to watch this as a movie which was looking good and even the best after rated 8 here.very disappointed in what i got.if its an action film its dead slow nd boring,if its a kids or a fantasy film its a way out of its genre,if its some kind of serious drama or message film...believe me there is hardly some.so what is it actually!!?..well...its a pure boredom of almost 2 and half hours.picking 2 kids from 1 district one male nd one female, train them, sponsor them for a reality TV show in which only one survives after killing the rest from all 24 sounds very interesting but the way they made this..its awful.giving 4/10 strictly because of the good performance of Jennifer Lawrence.
Agneepath (2012)
Nothing Special !! just another lazy remake..
Recreating/Remaking Kukka Singh (meant to be scary but turned out to be funny)of Trimurti(1995) as Kancha is NOT a " tribute " to the great Mukul s. Aanand.neither its a proper remake of the cult classic.it tries to be different in its own way and falls flat.the only good thing about this film is Rishi Kapoor.he is playing a never before role of his life-plain bad guy.this Agneepath is more of a Subhash Ghaish melodrama but w'out any depth.it just cant connect even though it tries everything!!!very loud and damn lazy.Sanjay Dutt looks scary but acts silly,Hritik is big time mistake as Vijay Dinanath Chauhan, this Vijay is so poor, keep crying like a baby all the time,Priyanka hams as Kaali Kawde.its close to be called as Karan Johar production's AAG.the business is too good so far but i will suggest you to watch the old one one more time than waste your time and money on this one.
Underworld: Awakening (2012)
Action!!! Action!!! and more...Action!!!
underworld has always been one of my favorite series, loved the previous 3 installment.the reason behind it is its always served with the proper balance of style and substance.there was always some good story behind, specially Underworld: Rise of the Lycans had some great love story.underworld Awakening is not only about Vampires and Lycans,it tries to go further and involves the humans this time, with some little twists it doesn't have much to tell, story is missing.but the good news is u wont feel that something is missing because of its non-stop crispy action.underworld has its own brand-action.stylish/over the top moves gives u the feel of video game.if you are lover of an action flick and do not care much about whys and hows...this is the movie you just cant miss!!
Don 2 (2011)
DON 2 - you cant call it a sequel !!
Age old tricks wit grand and glossy execution.simply belongs to 2 men-SRK and Farhan but its more of Farhan Akhtar's flick.hardcore SRK fans wont agree with me i know.its more of a thriller than the Donism.sadly it doesn't carry much as a sequel, make some little changes and you can easily name it different.wish they worked hard on script as a sequel.even though its almost predictable, its enjoyable in parts, specially chasing and action.stretched climax get on your nerves, seems like it wont come to an end in near future.SRK looks good nd acts well, specially that grand visual scene when he rides Ducati.Priyanka is good in action, didn't get much to act.Lara is wasted like an extra.Boman is just OK.Ali khan got the chance after too long but couldn't do much because of the poor script.one time watch.
Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011)
A Letdown for its franchise
i am a big fan of MI franchise.big fan of tom cruise himself.loved both MI 1 and MI 2.MI 3 was kinda OK for me.after watching ghost protocol's promo i was expecting the same magic of first two parts.there are lots of people here liking it,loving it.the ratings are above eight but i am here to share my honest view.so here it is.if u think that MI-3 was a letdown for its franchise, here comes the 4th.its a B grade spy movie with very few A grade stunts/gimmicks.MI-1 had the substance,MI-2 had the woo-style,MI-3 didn't have much and this one is confused between them all.to show the heroism right,to show the mission's importance,to actually involve the audience...all you need is a strong villain, the real bad guy.this is what missing here.very average stuff.Disappointing.
