Grey's Anatomy (2005– )

Addictive show
30 April 2006
Grey's Anatomy is a surprisingly addictive show. The plot lines are an interesting blend of soap opera, drama, and comedy--it's not really like anything else, but at the same time, it occasionally feels pedestrian. However, it's very well done--good writing, great acting, and well directed.

Sandra Oh stands out for her comic timing, but the entire cast is superb. It's not as grave as ER, but is just as compelling. Also, it's a little more accessible than ER and some of the more serious medical dramas. The show is definitely worth catching--if you can't watch it when it airs, TiVo it or rent the first season DVD. It's well worth the time spent! It's great for marathon viewings!

Kinky Boots (2005)
8/10
Cheeky, good fun!
30 April 2006
Kinky Boots is a cheeky, fun little movie that has a simple message, but a life all its own! It is part of the new wave of irreverent British comedies and it holds its own against the rest of the pack.

Chiwetel Ejiofor shines in this film, proving once again that he's an actor to watch. After compelling turns in Inside Man and Dirty Pretty Things (among others), he defies convention in Kinky Boots--this is not an actor who can be type cast! He is riveting as Lola/Simon, convincing through and through.

There are some subplots that fall a little flat, but the story is very cute overall. The actors are uniformly good, but Ejiofor stands out. In addition, the production design is also pretty well done--the drag sequences are hysterical and a joy to behold. This film put a gigantic smile on my face that stayed put for the rest of the day!

Adorable movie for the ladies
30 April 2006
This is an adorable movie for the ladies out there! Diane Lane is wonderful and the scenery is jaw-dropping...it's unbelievably gorgeous (including the men)! It'll make you yearn to travel to Italy!

The story doesn't follow a typical romantic comedy outline, but that works to its advantage. It has a great blend of realism and wistfulness. I happened to see it while I was going through a transitional period in my life, and I cannot express how much it meant to me (and still means to me). It's the perfect movie for someone who is looking for someone who is closing an old chapter in their life and moving on to a new one.

The film does have some small flaws, such as the occasional awkward musical choice, but overall, it's a lovely little film with an uplifting message.
