The Flatshare (2022)
Entertaining, fluffy but likeable
A very predictable storyline in terms of trajectory and ending but my wife and I both enjoyed it (especially my wife) and made for good viewing on a very rainy gloomy day (which we've had an awful lot of for so many weeks now)
The lead characters were very likeable: the hero throughout and the heroine more and more as the series progressed. Some of the villains were very good too, especially Leon's girlfriend, who put in a deft performance. On the other hand, the heroine's ex-boyfriend was a bit hammy at times and close to over-acting although I get that they wanted to portray him as psychotic. His 'entrance' at the awards ceremony was hilarious.
As for locations - I think I spotted Exmouth Market - there weren't enough street scenes. A lot went on in small rooms and so the filming felt claustrophobic at times. I'd also criticise the music, which was pretty awful, cheesy, generally sub-par.
The subplot about Mr Prior and his lost love got a bit twee and very predictable. Surely the writer could have done a little better on that front?
Tulsa King (2022)
Entertaining yes but extremely low quality
At the end of the day, is this entertaining? I'd have to say yes. But make no mistake, this is utter, utter drivel. The plot is totally ridiculous and every storyline is entirely improbable. Of course who doesn't love Sly? He has an enduring charm, but that charm is on a slippery slope, not least because having to look at his massively replasticked face is a huge distraction.
Were there other characters that I took to? The 'baddie' with the strong Ulster accent was interesting. He would make a good Bond villain but his performance was way over the top. There were of course two romantic storylines, which weren't finished either.
Looking at the way the series ended clearly they're going to make another series - which I won't be watching.
Karen Pirie (2022)
A decent storyline but awful casting
Fairly well-written Whodunit though there are enough clues early on via 'raised eyebrows' as to the identity of the villain. The real problem with this is the casting. No way is the actress who plays Karen Pirie a convincing police officer. Nursery school teacher perhaps. And her acting is diabolical. And yet we're promised a second series. She gives long pauses and no I won't blame that on the scriptwriter. She behaves like no police officer would. Lying on the floor for inspiration. Yes perhaps a nursery school teacher would. And her number two joins in. Really? In fact his casting is pretty terrible too. Sigh...
House of Gucci (2021)
The worst movie of the year to date
This film just beggars belief. Big stars. No make that mega stars. But the most horrible directing (Ridley Scott what were you thinking), editing, and acting. I sat there and could not believe what I was seeing. Jeremy Irons perhaps the only person to come out with any respect. But the others have torn their reputations to shred in this mega turkey. Lady Gaga consistently almost seems to forget her lines, pausing every time she speaks. Al Pacino clearly peaked in Scarface and has been in terminal decline since - hitting new lows here. But prize turkey performance must go to Jared Leto for his performance as Paolo Gucci. Did someone forget to tell him that this was a drama and not a comedy? This is a very interesting story but what a shocker of a movie.
Chloe (2022)
It's not the mystery that unravels towards the end - it's the sense
I see the 'Top Review' only goes up to Episode 4 (of 6). Well yes, this drama series proceeded plausibly up to Episode 4. But then it implodes. And I feel cheated after investing all that time in it. I don't think I'm giving away anything by saying that the lead character pretends to be someone else. And we all wait for her to be rumbled. But instead of that the plot lines start to break apart - from Episode 5. And after that the writing is on the wall. In fact once she is rumbled, it is an appaling anticlimax. The trait of a poorly written script. There are so many things that either don't make sense or aren't explained properly.
As for the two lead characters, their performances are strangely flat, whereas the other characters are well played. Perhaps by then they just wished they were somewhere else. I bet too that they would love to pretend that they never appeared in this series by impersonating another person.
The Drowning (2021)
Dire. Waste of time. Laughable
I am giving this one star only because it made me laugh at times because the plot descended into farce. It just became so so dumb and the acting went completely off piste. Poor old Rupert Penry-Jones whose expressions throughout the four episodes made it clear that he just didn't want to be there. He knew from the outset that this was a complete turkey. Avoid at all costs!!!
The Virtues (2019)
Stunning. Unforgettable. Stephen Graham is just incredible
Perhaps the most gripping British drama that I can remember of recent times. Many scenes are harrowing and you'll be crying a lot. But you'll be laughing at other times too. But mostly, you'll be holding your breath because of the sheer weight of the increasingly intense drama that unfolds. Stephen Graham has never been better and the writing is perfect for his incredible acting chops. And frankly, on this form, who's better than Graham? This is what TV drama is all about. Truly unforgettable.
Swamp Thing (2019)
Plenty of wood here - especially the acting
Love the idea of a creature in the swamp and love the whole Louisiana bayou backdrop but where did they get the scriptwriters....kindergarten? And the acting is more wooden that the gnarly roots that are the start of the show.
