Run-Of-The-Mill Rom Com...
11 May 2024
Not bad -not really good, either- but has the uneasy & unmistakeable feeling that ANY sort of chemistry ('specially between Brooke & Benjamin..) was carefully edited out of the entire "film" (and I use the term loosely..). Since both broken Benjamin are incredibly appealing and professional individuals, one can only blame the obviously inexperienced and unfamiliar director, whomever that may be.

Best thing in the movie is Wilson Cruz who, as is his want (& signature, lol), gleefully plays his role with fun & a heavy wink at his audience.

On a side note, the supposed lack of experience with "social media" played with embarrassment by Brooke, reminds me -at 70 years of age & as a 30-year veteran of the Motion Picture Industry- that I am INCREDIBLY happy to be dead soon..!

I Now Totally Believe That Jerry Is 70..!
3 May 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Polished, with every possible gleem & glow considered & applied seamlessly -from casting to lighting & cinematography to production design- script is/was.. probably ..readable.

It's good -definitely appealing to look at- but not really superb in any area (except maybe for make-up, which is, frankly, amazing!). Seinfeld is capable enough, tho' his experience in narratives is limited to TV, and it shows. Not 'badly', really.. just more like.. painfully. But watchable (then again, I AM typing this while it plays..). Much silliness, as is it's due, considering it's lineage. Not hideous. Just don't expect this script to make sense or for the action to follow from point A to point B.

IN ADDITION .. Ok, so viewing #2 altered my opinion.. a lil. It's fun, STILL seems like a first-director effort (which it is, after all..), but a couple things DO stand out; absolutely LOVE the yellow Corvair station wagon (which I would TOTALLY drive, if I could find one...) & Bill Burr as JFK is casting genius! He's SO perfect in the role that it took me fully half of his Oval Office scene before I realized it was him (& I'm a HUGE fan of his stand-up work..!)

So yeah, another Star for the ratings.

Twenty Out Of 10 Possible Stars...
23 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Impossible? Not at all.. in terms of accuracy, intent & delivery -&, unfortunately, misunderstanding, scorn & dismissal as well (all of which seem to go together on this planet & with this species!), probably THE single most important film ever made. And made perfectly. Taken out of context, which we almost always do & never should, there are filmatic technical idiosyncrasies & similarly insignificant details in what one might incorrectly regard as perspective, however these things are common in all art forms & should rightfully be appreciated as part of the charm & appeal of art as both an entertainment and a truth.

In short -and unfortunately I've already blown that idea, but it's wasn't until I started this "review", that the impact & power of this film hit me between the eyes- this 1951 effort is a philosophically truthful recounting of past errors & future realities.

We must all take heed, before it's warnings & inevitable conclusions are realized upon us as a species and this planet as a whole. It is as accurate & applicable today as it was the moment it wrapped production (in 1950/51? -I don't know production details..).

Enough said.

Nick & Nora It Ain't.. BUT...
8 April 2023
Granted the halcyon Days of Hollywood -the 20s, 30s and 40s- are gone forever, but Jennifer Aniston is charming and capable as always (even with Adam Sandler's constantly annoying character poking through!) & a suitable contemporary replacement for Myrna Loy. And at least Sandler's character is named "Nick"! Netflix could do much, much worse than emulating a classic film series like The Thin Man, which these Murder Mystery entries somewhat resemble more than anything else that we've seen in the last 50 or 60 years. Here's hoping that Netflix will stick with the formula -and cast- and continue to make these for at least another two or three movies.

The Deal (I) (2008)

Excellent -but only if you're a Hollywood insider
7 April 2023
Film will either make no sense or be poorly received by anyone not in the Industry.. Bill Macy has the credits and the chops to know Hollywood at its best, worst and most "Hollywood" . I don't think I've seen but two or three films in my life that have the attention to detail, the humor -and the horror- and the accuracy of a film production from conception to release that Macy's "The Deal" has. Hysterically funny, incredibly twisted and shockingly accurate. Meg Ryan (who has a horrible reputation in this town) is absolutely wonderful and there is an unmistakable chemistry between her and Macy. The entire cast is great and the movie is a great deal of fun -but only if you're one of us and you've spent 20 years of small, twisted independent pictures/roles with a smattering of biggies thrown in for flavor, as Macy has.

They always say write what you know.. this is a perfect example. Wonderful film...

Ummm...
29 November 2021
I'd never heard of this movie. Or the story behind it. And, I gotta say, never been a big fan of Carey, TBH, though I have seen most of his films. I kinda think this is his best work. Certainly up there in the top three.

Same for McGregor, whom I do like, but often seems like he takes himself too seriously (sorta the "ac-TOR" type, mebbe..). But this work is understated, 'real', wonderfully shy and fun to watch all around.

I liked it!
