Dragon Ball Z (1996)
It's not just the first two sagas.
You know it's more than just the Saiyan and Namek stuff, right? The Android Saga, the Cell Saga, the Great Saiyaman Saga, and the Majin Buu Saga are all still things. None are great. Yeah there's some cool Gohan stuff in the Cell saga but it's not enough to make it good. You also can't keep raising the stakes after you just set the stakes at THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE in the namek saga, everything after feels forced or ridiculous. The ability to be revived lessons the stakes and is a cheap cop-out. Some of the most annoying character in any anime (Hercule, Chi-chi, Videl, Goku, Yamcha). There are a few complex characters, like Vegeta, Gohan, and Piccolo, but they lose some or all of their complexity as the series goes on. Goku is a boring protagonist because he's all "pure and perfect". There is very little world-building. And... It's not that deep, it's really just fighting as some point. It's the non-anime fan's favorite anime.
The Legend of Korra (2012)
I'll-formed.
I rewatched LofK recently and then I decided to rewatch the original afterwards, and it made me realize how malformed the Korra series really is. It's not just that it isn't as good as the original but that it is actually harmful to the greater Avatar world. It doesn't so much as build upon the world of the original but rather rewrite it's own poor man's version of it, with less interesting characters and situations. There is lack of character depth. Lin is easily the most complex character in the show, but if she was from the original she wouldn't even be in the top five, maybe not even the top ten. The structure is also a major problem, with seasons being shorter, events aren't given time to breathe so things often come across as miraculous and unwarranted. It's also not one unified story but a collection of an interdependent series of events that don't really build upon each other. The only truly great part of this series is the flashback where we learn about the first Avatar.
Nailed It!: The Burbank State Fair (2021)
The Drag Queens were DELIGHTFUL!
So funny, beautiful friendship, work great together :))))
Boku no hîrô akademia: His Start (2020)
Keep in mind though...
Ok, I love this episode and all, great fight scene, lotta emotion, BUT I don't like how they handled Endeavor's past abusive towards his wife and kids. It just sorta of explained it away by saying that "deep down he's a good man". Feels kinda manipulative and gaslighty. I hope next season we see a more nuanced and sensitive portrayal of Endeavor's past as well as his character development.
Love, Victor (2020)
Give it a chance
I was skeptical going into this show cause I assumed this was just gonna be a cheap knock off or a pointless money-grab and I actually was turned off by the show in the first 10 minutes of episode 1 and gave up on it intially. But once I learned that Simon Spier as in the guy from Love, Simon appears in the show and that made me want to give it another shot. And the more I watched the more I fell in love with the characters and the narrative and the more I appreciated how smart, clever, sweet, and tragic it is with out be too over-the-top (most of the time). I'm not gonna say that there aren't cringey or unintentionally awkward moments but love, victor is honestly a very admirable and respectable show.
The Good Place: Whenever You're Ready (2020)
Wow
The most supremely bittersweet ending to a series in television history
Little Women (2019)
Greta Gerwig's best film
Stellar performances from the cast with career highlights from the likes of Timothee Chalamet and Florence Pugh. The writing and directing are all top notch, and is likely the best Little Woman adaptation.
Us (2019)
It's actually really good
Admittedly, it tries to do too much but this movie is ahead of its time.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Very captivating
An almost always engaging film with fantastic performances from the two leads, but it kinda falls apart in the last 15 minutes
Uncut Gems (2019)
Good but confusing
Good but confusing. Julia is the most standout character. I liked the ending but I wish there was more of a resolution.
Dragon Ball Kai: Doragon bôru kai (2009)
It's a decent remastering
Biggest turn offs for me are the change in the voice actors and the different dialogue that characters say. Both those combined make the kai version of Frieza very disappointing and unintimidating.
