World War II: From the Frontlines (2023)
Excellent for what it is
Wow, so many negative reviews from the 'history experts of WWII'. Historical inaccuracies, so many things left out, subtleties missed, and on & on. How is it these brilliant minds seem to not recognize the whole point of this documentary: to restore and colorize archival film from the war to put together a reasonable (if simplistic) and engaging review of the war and to bring it to life again ( perhaps in a way it hasn't been done before except in fiction). That there may not be archival footage for many of the events left out or many of the subtleties should not be surprising. And what's up with the narration complaints? I honestly have no clue what these people are really talking about. I think that the average person with an interest in a more realistic view of the war will enjoy this. Post- grad history majors, perhaps not so much.
The Rook (2019)
Looks good so far...
After first episode, it looks like a very interesting supernatural spy thriller. Well done with decent acting, great visuals and sound. I hope the series will maintain this level of excellence. I did not read the book it is based on, so have no prior expectations.
The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
Don't sit up front!!
This is a decent movie, I think. Unfortunately I couldn't watch all of it, having to avert my eyes for much of the last half of the movie. As many have previously stated, this movie makes continuous use of hand-held camera close-ups and cuts, even when there is no action on screen. While I am all for novel techniques (and would agree that this technique can certainly add to a tense claustrophobic feel that heightens the suspense) if you are at all prone to motion sickness DO NOT SIT UP FRONT. This effect is particularly nauseating during what appears to be an excellent car chase near the end of the movie.
This is one movie that I actually can't wait to see again on my small screen at home, sitting far away.
Natural Born Killers (1994)
That roller coaster ride that you just love to do over and over again...
What a wonderful film. The message (how our cultural love affair with violence fuels the media depiction of violence), the unique techniques used to convey the message (Mallory's abusive upbringing as a sitcom), and the fascinating (and yes, music video-type) editing are all first rate. Why then is this movie hated by so many? I think there may be two main reasons: First, many people are quite regimented and conservative. They expect life to proceed in a predictable and orderly manner. Two follows one and three follows two. End of story. If not, these people get very anxious, and anxiety breeds contempt. In NBK, things do not proceed in an orderly and predictable manner. Camera angles are often extreme, color keeps alternating with black and white, the story line is oblique and symbolism is projected onto people and objects in preposterous ways. People like those above (and you all know who you are) will NOT like this movie. Secondly, there are those that live for the destination and those who enjoy the ride. This movie is a roller coaster; it is not the destination that is important, it is the ride. For those that seek the destination and don't care about the ride, this movie will disappoint. For those that keep getting back on the roller coaster over and over again(even though you know full well the destination) just for the ride - this movie is for you.
