What We Do in the Shadows: Pilot (2019)
It's Modern Family with Vampires
The characters, one liners and situations are hilarious. They talk to the camera while explaining away reasons for whatever happened or is happening. Laszlo's disguise in one episode was a toothpick he kept in his mouth rendering him unrecognizable to everyone. I always get a few big laughs. Love this show.
Millions Like Us (1943)
I loved this movie!
I almost skipped this movie because I thought it was a documentary. It turned out to be a heartwarming and heartbreaking gem. My parents were kids living in Manhattan when the War broke out and my father turned 18 in 1944 and joined the Navy, telling us that he couldn't wait to get in it. They grew up in a neighborhood where everyone they knew signed up as soon as they became of age. The sacrifices that were given in order to support "our boys over there," rations, no meat and sugar, the joining of the various clubs and church organizations that sprung up to do "their share" were all very much the stories that I grew up hearing; all told without malice, but with a true sense of wanting to help, and proud to do it. "Bundles for Britain" was a saying I first heard from my father-in-law who spent 3 years in Africa with the Army. Seeing this movie gave me a genuine look (as it was filmed in 1943) of what exactly our Greatest Ally was enduring. While the ending was heartbreaking, it expressed, through a young woman's eyes, how the War effected everyone in different ways and how they changed from the beginning, middle and an end which was yet to be seen. A man I worked with told me, "I cannot describe to you the feelings of patriotism that swept through the country during the War." This movie showed the ultimate sacrifices, both willing and non-willing, that were made, and how "carrying on" is an expression that means just as much now as it did then and will serve in every aspect of our lives.
EuroTrip (2004)
A very funny movie!
My sister watched this with her teenage sons when they brought it home from Blockbuster. She said she screamed laughing through it, and told me I had to see it. I watched it with my husband (we're in our 50's) and we laughed so hard there were tears running down our faces, and my husband doesn't laugh easily. Four kids go to Europe to find one of the group's e-mail friend. There are so many funny scenes and clever bits in it, it's hard to pick the funniest, but Vinny Jones opening up two bottles of beer with his eyelids and Jason Pitts in the S&M scene in Amsterdam are at the top of my list. The group's stay in Bratislavia with a very clever usage of a dirty restaurant table used as a map of their travels is absolutely hilarious! Is is silly and ridiculous? Yes! Was it one of the funniest movies I've ever seen? Yes! Rent it or go to your local library and get it for free - you'll laugh hysterically! I promise!
From Noon Till Three (1976)
To my unending surprise, I loved this movie and am searching all sources to find it and buy it.
Charm is not a word you would associate Charles Bronson with, but he is chock full if it in this "romp." A group of bank robbers leave Charles Bronson at a widow's (Jill Ireland's) house because his horse goes lame. They vow to pick him up after the robbery in what they figure will be about three hours (thus the name of the movie). In those three hours Charles Bronson, after almost attacking Jill Ireland, decides to go for a sympathy play and has Jill Ireland, within 15 minutes making love to him to help him with his "impotency." While watching the movie, it makes you wonder how she held off for so long. If you want to see Charles Bronson half naked, with a physique of a man 20 years younger, making love - three times -- this is the movie for you. After he leaves, and is mistakenly thought killed, Jill Ireland writes a book about their three hour affair and the whole thing turns into a type of legend, which turns the town into a type of World's Fair exhibit. Charles Bronson ends up in jail for different reasons where he finds out that he has become a legend and of course ties to tell people that's he's that person, and if things weren't already crazy they get crazier. Charles Bronson is unrecognizable from the characters he played in practically all of his other movies. This movie shows his range as an actor and makes me sad he never got to display more of what he was actually capable of. Jill Ireland pulls off her character beautifully and also shows her range, something else we never got to see in her other movies. After thinking about the movie, I know why they did it. If you are channel surfing and see it, by all means watch it. I'm looking for it on DVD now. I want to buy it.
