Ridley Road (2021)
Very good but.....
Just finished watching Ridley Rd - I think it was a very good antifascist drama, unfortunately spoiled at the end by the happy couple heading off to an apartheid state founded on ethnic cleansing - how paradoxical!! Exactly what they were fighting against!!
Far from the Madding Crowd (2015)
cack-handed, desperately disappointing and ultimately laughable
I'd seen the original version of 1967 with Julie Christie, Alan Bates and Terence Stamp a long time ago and although I can't remember a lot about it now I have a residue of memory that tells me that it was a fine film. I recently enjoyed "The Hunt" by the same Danish director Thomas Vinterberg and hence was looking forward to this. I was exceedingly disappointed - it was melodramatic tosh, and incredibly cack-handed in many scenes, stretching the imagination to breaking point - it may appeal to young adolescents as it is very simplistic - Farmer Oak is played well by Matthias Schoenaerts in a similar vein to his role as the Nazi officer in Suite Francaise (a considerably better film) but that apart I ended up laughing and trading facetious comments with my companion, seated beside me. It became almost enjoyably bad - I gave it 3 out of 10 on leaving the cinema, generous because of the mirth that it induced. On reflection that score is too high, hence my 2 out of 10.
