A cast of androids that checks all the boxes
This show has some promise but is ultimately let down by terrible acting and cliched casting choices. If you told me this was created by an AI trained to check all of today's required boxes and that all the characters were either CGI or androids I'd totally believe it. The stories are decent but predictable and lack any real creativity, but on the upside it's not another generic cop procedural although in the end it plays out about the same. Basically the setup is some rando with no personality roams the country and lucks into finding missing people while being aided by your standard cast of unbelievable characters. Like another reviewer mentioned, is it good TV? No, not even close, but when your only other choices are game shows and various reboots of The Gong Show, what else are you going to watch.
Password (2022)
So annoying it's painful
Wow, could a game show get any more annoying? No, the password is no. Between the shockingly grating emcee and the audience that howls "ooooohhhhh!!!" every time they say the password I find myself wanting to beat my head against the wall just to drown it all out. Why am I watching it if I think it's so terrible you ask? Because it's the least offensive thing on network TV that the spouse and I can agree on. But that's about to change because after 3 episodes I finally had to draw a line in the sand and say no more or a divorce would be coming next. I get that Hollywood is out of ideas and rebooting game shows from the 70s is just about all they have left but come on, it shouldn't be as hard as they make it look.
Reacher (2022)
Season 1 Good, Season 2 Awful
OK, so I gave this an 8 but that's all on the superior strength of season 1. I don't know if they got a different director or different writers or what but season 2 is so contrastingly bad it can be hard to watch. Season 1 had an amazing script that kept you hooked, had great pacing, and a wonderful cast that all fit their roles extremely well. Season 2 has none of that. The script seems to drag as if they're stalling for time, and the cast outside of Reacher and Neagley is Sharknado-level bad with Dixon being the worst. Total whiff on that one. All that said, Reacher is light years better than anything on network TV so even though season 2 is a letdown it's a better way to spend your TV watching time than the self flagellation that is sitting through yet another singing or game show. Check it out, just temper your expectations as you start into season 2.
Extended Family (2023)
Painfully bad
In a world where no one wants to make sitcoms anymore because they require both talent and money, you'd think just about anything would be welcomed with open arms. That's until you watch a couple episodes of Extended Family. No spoilers but the setup is dumb, the writing is sophomoric at best, and the jokes are about as funny as getting kicked in the groin for 20 minutes. I imagine the writing room being a handful of twenty-somethings who never enjoyed experiencing the golden age of the TV sitcom pitching ideas that they think are original and even a bit progressive yet this is the output - a show that's not just bad but offensively and painfully bad. If you have the strength to sit through more than one episode of this dreck you're far stronger than I am.
Family Law (2021)
What's wrong with network TV today
For anyone wanting to learn why network TV is dying (well one of the reasons) just watch this show. It could be any of a dozen similar shows on TV with bland but preachy characters who seem more concerned with teaching the audience a lesson than simply entertaining them. The dialog is as sharp as overcooked spaghetti but then why should it be sharp and witty when all you're trying to do is air out the same tired progressive, victimization propaganda solely meant to tell the audience how to think. Overall this is yet another forgettable, disposable show that we'll look back on in 30 years and wonder what was wrong with people that we thought this passed as entertainment.
Judge Steve Harvey (2022)
Another good idea destroyed by poor execution
Let me start by saying I'm a huge Steve Harvey fan, so when I saw he was jumping on the judge show bandwagon I thought it might finally be one I could get behind. And if that's all this was it would be great, but it's not. What you get instead is one part rando daytime TV judge show combined with one part Jerry Springer. Steve does a great job because he's Steve after all, but the plaintiffs and defendants are so melodramatic and over the top it's literally painful to watch. Actually physically painful. You people couldn't just find normal people with normal disagreements could you, you had to crank it up a notch and turn it into Idiocracy the TV show. Too bad, because Steve would have been a great arbitrator, but everyone involved with all other aspects of designing this show should be banned from the entertainment industry for life. If you consider shows like "Ow my balls" to be fine art then you're gonna love this one, otherwise save yourself an hour you'll never get back.
The Night Agent (2023)
Would be fun if it wasn't so dumb
This is another one of those shows that starts off strong but quickly degrades into unbelievable nonsense. Overall the acting is pretty solid (except for whoever plays Rose and Diane - holy cow are they terrible), the cinematography and direction is really good, but the writing so comically bad and unbelievable that they only way you could ever fight through the dumb is if you were on lots of drugs or severely intellectually challenged. Characters continually do totally unbelievable things that make no sense and by the time you get to the end the plot is so absurd it'll straight up make you angry. As someone else said, in todays world of awful shows this is better than most, but that still doesn't make it good.
Get Out (2017)
Decent time killer but overrated and not scary
After reading all the glowing over the top reviews I had a lot of high hopes for this one, and maybe that was the problem, but in the end it turned into work to make it all the way through. Yeah, there's a lot of racism, bigotry, and stereotypes in it that has somehow become acceptable and even celebrated today, but that's not its main problem. The main problem is it's just not a good movie. The concept is interesting but the writing, the directing and the cast suck the life out of it. You see everything coming a mile away and the characters are so bland you'll almost be rooting for the villains by the time it's over. Even as one of the better modern day horror movies, the bar is now so low that you can probably skip this one.
Scream VI (2023)
If you like a good horror mystery, this one's for you
What else can you really say, this is a movie that has a reviewers rating up in the 90s so you know it's good and we'll deserving of the Scream name. This movie has so much of what made the great horror/whodunits of decades ago the classics they are today - a fairly solid cast (except Mindy who is just awful), more plot than gore, and a twist that'll keep you guessing right up until the end. In the dark times we live in now where horror movies are bland, depressing, and more bloody than scary, having a movie come along like this where there's actually a well thought out, intelligent story behind it all is a real breath of fresh air. Check it out.
Corporate (2018)
Possibly the best show on TV today
In an age when networks are throwing out trash like The Neighborhood and Bob Hearts Abishola, it's shockingly refreshing to see a show that is genuinely funny and original like this one is. If you've never had a real job before you may not be able to relate to all that's going on in this show, but if you have you'll enjoy the ridiculously stupid but totally real and hilarious people and plots in each episode. If you long for the time when shows had original ideas and professional writers that actually made you laugh then you'll definitely want to give this one a try. Just watch the first couple episodes and you'll be hooked.
Teachers (2016)
One of the best comedies of the malaise era
Do you remember the golden age of TV when sitcoms were actually funny, they were entertaining, they pushed the boundaries, and everything was fair game? While Teachers can't necessarily compete with the powerhouses like Happy Days, MASH, or Married with Children, it absolutely blows the typically bland socio-comedy lectures we're beaten down with on network TV today completely out of the water. The characters are funny and unique, the stories engaging, and they don't waste your time with subconscious propaganda in an effort to make you buy in to their political narrative. No, it's only real mission is to make you laugh and that's where this show shines. That's also why it fails, because today we believe a TV show is there to teach you a lesson on how you should think, and a show that just wants to entertain never has a chance. But if you just want something light and easy that'll make you laugh, and you don't have the intolerant sensitivity of a raw nerve, you can't do much better than this.
9-1-1 (2018)
So bad it's bad
Growing up I absolutely loved shows like Emergency! And all those other rescue shows that were so popular. Sure they were cheesy but they were also lighthearted, even funny at times, and an easy, enjoyable watch. If that's what you're thinking this is, you'll be tragically disappointed. Instead you get just another regurgitation of bad, modern day network TV with the same formula they all follow: Get all the diversity boxes checked, add in the obligatory mixed race couple and a wacky character or two, throw in a pinch of (attempted) humor, then drown the whole thing in a heavy dose of melodrama and atrocious, high-school caliber writing. If you still don't believe network TV is dead, watch this and all your doubts will be erased.
The Outlaws (2021)
Such wasted potential
This is a series that starts super strong but quickly devolves into unfunny, bad TV. Lame stereotypes and poor writing ruin what is a great idea that could have been superb. Maybe the Americans can re-do it and make it entertaining but if you're over 16 or relatively intelligent then you'll quickly tire of this dreck.
The Crew (2021)
Best show in a long time
If you're like me, after watching years of network TV comedies you begin wondering whether they're even trying to make good shows any more. Then The Crew comes along and restores your faith. Yeah, it's Netflix, but maybe that's why it's so good? If you get tired of not funny comedies who seem mostly concerned with lecturing you on how to be woke, give this a try. It's funny, all the characters are likable even though they're all flawed in their own way, and it's just plain good entertainment. As the networks circle the drain but can't figure out why no one watches them any more, this is a refreshing lesson in what a 30 minute sitcom should be.
Home Economics (2021)
Pretentious and unlikable
This is one of those shows that combines boring, unlikable people with an unfunny script in an embarrassing, failed attempt to hip. If you're someone who likes Big Brother and follow the Kardashians I suspect you might like this. If you're a human with good taste and a sense of humor you probably won't.
Monsterland (2020)
Just terrible
I guess making horror must be the hardest job in Hollywood because few seem to be able to make a show that's even watchable. I'm only commenting on ep1 since I gave up after that, but you know all those low budget, awful horror movies that infest other streaming platforms? This is just another in a long line of forgettable junk like those. I will say the actors and cinematography are great, there's just no story to work with. Do yourself a favor and watch Saw for the 3rd time or maybe X-Files reruns instead.
Badland (2019)
Painful to watch
Take every western you've ever seen, roll them into one motion picture, then filter out any kind of personality that the main characters might have and that's Badland. If this is your first western then it may be worth a watch if you can't find something good but if not you'll likely find this painfully bad and an overall poor effort.
Press Your Luck (2019)
The original was awesome, the new one not so much
I was sooo excited to see Press Your Luck was being remade. That was until I watched Elizabeth Banks hosting, which besides her raccoon eyes and grating, shrill voice is just a bad overall fit for this show. What an incredible disappointment this turned out to be. You're just left wondering how many people had to check off on Banks and no one had the courage to say anything. Oh well, if you can get past the host it's a fun game to watch, although if you're a fan I'd suggest sticking with reruns of the original, they're far better.
Bless This Mess (2019)
Incredibly disappointing and unfunny
I was really looking forward to this show - the premise and setup is great. However, the writing is some of the worst I've ever seen. Nothing anyone does makes any sense at all, it's painfully clear that the writers know nothing about farms, Nebraska or living in the country, and it is so unfunny that you'll seriously cringe and roll your eyes at times. It's a show that makes you ponder the bigger questions, like who greenlit this thing, and was there no one involved who raised any red flags when reading the script? It's a show that is so bad all the way around you feel dumber having been exposed to it. It's a real shame too because the mistakes are so glaring and the opportunities so clear that I feel just about anyone could help fix it and at least make it better than it is now. Sadly I predict a quick death to this train wreck.
