The Vanishing Triangle (2023)
Glued to the screen
Twisty plot contrivances get a little unhinged in final episode, but creepy tone and excellent performances particularly from the two lead actors kept us glued to the screen.
Based on true still unsolved murders, this show depicts a what-if scenario to try to explain the disappearances of missing women in Ireland in the 1990s. The feeling of dread and tension doesn't exactly fit in with Irelands identity as a charming friendly country.
The unique element of the show is that it doesn't just search out the bad guy serial killer. It also shows how the institutions of the time were totally corrupt.
Normal People (2020)
Very good but not truly great
All talented people involved in this and it does not go too wrong in its telling. But its much too long - could have been told in three hour miniseries. Also overhyped to an off-putting extent: Daisy Endgar Jones is just as good if not superior to Paul Mescal.
The South Westerlies (2020)
Shockingly poor
All round awful plot and dialogue. Soapy direction. Acting sub panto level. Apart from Orla Brady who is much better than this and will probably never do an Irish TV show again.
This is RTE's Sunday night offering? Someone on top needs their head examined.
