Berserk: Ougon Jidai-hen - Memorial Edition: The Golden Age (2022)
Incredible.
The Berserk manga is one of my favorite series of all time and watching this arc animated is something very exciting for me. Hopefully the studio realizes how much the Berserk fanbase is eager to see the rest of the arcs animated.
This was a great introductory episode. The animation is so gorgeous and vibrant which was a fun contrast to the black-and-white manga. I think the voice acting is solid and the events retold here are engaging and perfect set up for Kentaro Miura's masterpiece of storytelling. Guts is shown as a broken individual, though not much depth is given to him here. We get flashes of his past with Gambino and Donovan in his dreams so hopefully they flesh out this part of his character. Griffith is amazing. My favorite in the manga, his dialogue is written so well here. The subtitles don't detract from the superb delivery of Griffith's lines. Casca is also shown here and we get the beginning of her relationship with Guts. The fight scenes were amazingly animated with the Guts and Griffith duel being a highlight. The episode ends with Griffith's monologue to Guts about his ambitions. The ending song is also great.
Overall I'm very happy about this episode! I think it adapted the manga in a faithful but different way. Excited to continue!
Velma: Velma (2023)
If You Hate It... Don't Watch It?
I love the Scooby-Doo franchise. Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated is peak fiction. But anyway, I came into this with super low expectations from all of the reviews I've seen. I was pleasantly surprised by this premiere.
Things I Liked:
- The animation is gorgeous, especially when Velma has her hallucinations
- The music was really good
- The plot is interesting and engaging to me. The mystery makes me want to continue the series. I want to know where Diya went and who murdered Brenda and Krista.
- Norville is a great and likable character
- Cliffhanger
Things I Didn't Like:
- Too much meta humor
- Not funny in the slightest. A few chuckles at most.
- Daphne and Fred are SO UNLIKABLE
I'm neutral to Velma's character for now.
