Starship Troopers (1997)
extremely cool film - watch it
don't get fooled by the appearance of incredible shallowness - it's not a dumb hollywood flick. this is an incredibly clever packaged satire. and fun to watch, too.
to paraphrase the director: the fact that a large percentage of the audience did not understand the satire aspect - e.g. they swallowed the propaganda hook and sinker - is somewhat frightening. another thing he said: "they [the actors] didn't understand it, either - just like the characters they play. that made them perfect for their roles."
a must-see in CNN-brainwashed america.
San tau dip ying (1997)
good style, good movie
don't expect a plot that makes a whole lot of sense - it's all about cool special/free-for-hire agents and double-crossings and out- smarting and stuff - sort of like a james bond without the cheesyness.
but this movie really surprised me for it's very well executed and creative action scenes. even now, years later, i vividly remember how a gangster boss gets shot up: first, they cut the power and come in with infrared goggles and shower everything in bullets, then the bad guys catch on and put on their own nightvision gear - they are prepared, of course. next thing, the heroes swap goggles for sunglasses and throw flares... so they outsmart the gangsters, but, perhaps more importantly, they also LOOK way, way cooler - and that is the whole point!
excellent stuff.
Wo hu cang long (2000)
must see 2000
i love martial arts movies, and that was my initial reason to see the film. and truly, the martial arts scenes in the movie can compare with the very best (believe me, i have seen tons).
but that's only the beginning: the story is beautiful and deep, the scenery and landscape is gorgeous, the main actors are very good. Ziyi Zhang is probably the most beautiful woman i have seen in a film this year. and the fantasy elements are wonderfully imaginative.
in short: this is easily the best film i have seen all year. easily. it's one of those things where everything is perfect, where everything came together in such a way that you wish it would last forever.
i never see any film more than once, but this one i have to go see again on the big screen.
